Garlic Mustard
Alliaria petiolata

Heard on NPR that this "weed" is THE most nutritious green ever scientifically tested.
Sorry to learn it is invasive.

Does it spread only by seed?
If so, I can dead head it.

Does it spread underground like mint?
If so, I'll put it in a container.

Ever grown it?
What's it taste like?
Decisions, decisions.
I tried a couple of usernames and have finally settled on:

crittergarden.

That's it, no more changes. I'm done. I will be crittergarden here, on Cubits, and when I renew my Dave's Garden subscription on Noveber 4, I'll be crittergarden over there, too. DONE!

know not much but there is a lot of it in this area and one state park has invasive weed gathering events with a garlic mustard recipe challenge!

I'd guess it tastes like mustard greens with a definite garlic edge. Big Grin I think I can assure you that it is seed grown and an early spring grower.

It sounds delicious, even! Mustard is my favorite green (I've taken to using it on sandwiches instead of lettuce) and I love garlic!

What would I have to do to get you to send me some seeds????

And maybe put me in touch with some of those recipes!

Just be my friend. There, done!
I don't have any seed on hand-- I'll have to keep an eye out for garic mustard going to seed here in the wild. You can try googling for the recipes, I have work tonight but can look up links to that org later and see if anything is posted.

Look up pictures of the plant and keep your eye out in parks etc.

Done the looking up, and I'm keeping my eye out. None yet. It's early.

Just curious about the recipes, don't really need recipes - I'll pluck it and chew it! I like mustard that much. And garlic. I'm hungry just thinking of it.

OMG I just got hold of better pictures. This IS everywhere around here! I have hated this weed. I will continue to hate it where it doesn't belong but I will put some into a pot and EAT!!!!

I am suddenly all jazzed up about this plant I've been cussing for almost a decade.

I heard on NPR recently that this is the MOST nutritious green ever tested. It is terribly INVASIVE here. I have hated it for years. I will continue to hate it where it doesn't belong. Yet since I have learned how nutritious it is, I plan to grow it in containers where it can't escape, keep it deadheaded, and chow down! I've been needing to find a food crop that would be prolific and strong here in zone 5.....

Beans and greens, baby. Beans and greens. FREE FOOD!

Great! You have to do a pot soon and let us know. I only wonder if it is tough or tasty at this stage well into bloom.
Now we have the free greens, do you actually have a source of free beans?
Thanks for finding my old thread over at DG and letting me know where I can get some. With enough eating ,we humans can bring things to local extinction!

No my beans aren't free, but they're $1 a dry pound.....

I tasted a leaf raw this weekend. It's more garlic than mustard, but that's OK because I love garlic! It'll go in just about everything I cook in place of garlic and to provide more nutrients than garlic. I'm quite pleased.

MM- I made meatballs today and the sauce called for garlic and parsley. I could see using this for that. (Of course, I do have huge bunches of garlic chives in my garden already.)

Yeah.
Did I mention that garlic mustard is the MOST nutritious green ever tested? That's my reason for loving it. And the fact that it will grow itself without any encouragement from me.

You've really tempted me to take an extra walk in the woods just to get it.

I found nutrition rating on lambsquarter one time. Also very nutritious. Do you know about that weed? er food?

Gosh, I have it in my own yard - don't have to go out and get it! And one thing I forgot to mention about it is that the wild critters leave it alone, as opposed to the way I have to defend my sown crops. I munched on it yesterday while I was working in the yard.

I have heard of Lamb's Quarters, but wouldn't recognize it. Do show and tell!

Is your yard moist and woodsy? The one place I know Garlic Mustard is, is in a picture I took near a river.

There's a link fo a pretty good seedling photo of Lambsquarter- I just spotted some seedlings the other day. Its not fuzzy but has a sort of dusty powder that naturally happens on the leaves.

While they don't look all that tender, I find them to stay tender until they start to bolt. At that stage the leaves get much smaller and pointier. The minus for them is when cooked they turn a less appetizing shade of army green. But so does sorrel.

By the way I am all for experimenting with wild edibles. The longer the economy stinks, the more it will become mainstream. Till then we can be weird together Thumbs up

My goal would be to only have edible weeds and eliminate all inedible untasty weeds. I'll never get there. But imagine if yu didn't have to replant ever year because everything that will grow anyway is desirable??? wow!

And YES, me too, on your goal!
Except I must plant tomatoes and peppers forever.
