Most, if not all, go through a "fiddlehead" stage.
So which are the famed edible "fiddlehead ferns"?
Decisions, decisions.
I tried a couple of usernames and have finally settled on:

crittergarden.

That's it, no more changes. I'm done. I will be crittergarden here, on Cubits, and when I renew my Dave's Garden subscription on Noveber 4, I'll be crittergarden over there, too. DONE!

This article has a list of commonly-eaten ones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiddlehead_fern#Varieties

This site says that some wild ferns are toxic: http://lancaster.unl.edu/factsheets/031.htm
... but it doesn't name which ones, so I'd make sure you can ID the ferns you're getting fiddleheads from and stick to the list in the Wikipedia article.

Have you ever eaten fiddleheads? My sister-in-law harvests a few from her streambank every spring, but I live too far away to get a plateful.

Wonder if she'd dig up a couple to trade?

Hmm, I haven't asked her, because I'm fairly certain they wouldn't grow here... despite all the rain we get, the only always-wet places around me are salt marshes. Do you have a shaded pond or stream you can plant them near?

I think they'd be rather fragile to ship, so maybe locating some in your area would make most sense. Any parks or woodlands nearby to look for ferns in?

Well, I could keep up with the watering.
I'm always "shopping" for edible plants. Problem with looking for local ferns growing somewhere, which I CAN find, is that I don't know anybody who's EATEN them! I thought since your sister's ferns were pre-tested.....

Yep. I made the photo because people wanted to see my blue hair, but I didn't want to show my face.

I love your blue hair.

I want to turn mine green. I am 52 years old and the only things about me that haven't gone south yet are my hair and green eyes. The hair is starting to go grey and I want to turn it green to make my eyes stand out before they go grey too.

I've worked hard to keep my face out of photos for decades!

Thanks!

I've done green before too. It's a lot of fun, especially to get a really vibrant shade... almost seems to glow in the dark, and people notice it right away. With the blue, a lot of people do double-takes, because without bright light it just looks like dark hair. But I think blue should have been my natural color... it's what I'm most comfortable in.

I really love gray hair. White runs in my family, so I'll probably never have a nice silver to show off.

Mine is weird. My hair has always been brown. My mother's was black, but she went salt&pepper at a young age. Her grey wasn't really grey, white OR silver, it was kind of clear. And so is mine now. I think the ones going grey are the ones that used to turn really blond over the summer. At any rate, when they start to outdo the brown, I'm greening up.

plants,
If you are interested I have ostrich ferns and have eaten them . I would be glad to send some young ones your way.
They multiply rather quickly and are not too picky about location as long as they get some shade.Thumb of 2011-06-04/gardengus/97eaa9

I have a trade list over at Dave's Garden under the name of "Nilly" (I know, I hate that. I was going for "WIll Nilly" - it was taken and then "Willy" was taken too, so "Nilly"....) I'll be changing it to "plantsandpets" when my subscription's up in November. Then they'll match and I won't have to answerr to "Nilly" anymore.

Anyway - go look at my trade list and see if there's anything I can send you in return!
