I am very new to African Violets, but I have seen some of those that sparkle - they are so cool!

I have about a half a dozen of them. Three I got from my mother-in-law, and three I bought at an African Violet flower show. So far none of them have flowers.

Are they named? I bet they are beautiful. I have a Volkman named Tiffany that I know.

The three I bought at the flower show are named. Lets see if I can remember. Lemon Whip, Witchcraft (???), and.... darn I cannot remember the third. I have them written down somewhere!

Thats probably witch doctor? Which is very interesting. I like the leaves on him. The Lemon Whip is very pretty. I would be interested to know the 3rd one. Maybe we could do a leaf swap.

lol I would love a leaf or two of him. If you can find out what the 3rd is that would be great and I will send you a description of mine to see if you want a swap. If you are interested that is. Lovey dubby

Oh absolutely! Would love to swap leaves. I am thinking the third av I bought at the flower show was an unnamed... oh, something that starts with an 'O'...

I bought my mom a 'Magnolia' av for Mother's Day, and snuck a leaf off of it before I gave it to her Hilarious!

It sure takes a long time for those leaves to make babies though. Last time I looked at the leaf, there was nothing (but the leaf was still green and in good shape). I use my DH's leftover dairy queen sundae containers as little greenhouses for starting babies.

Yes - that is it - Optimara. No I don't know what color it will be.

All of my av's are looking real nice, but none are blooming. I am using a weak solution of Schultz's av food when I water. Any tips?

Check your light. They also like to be rootbound to bloom. so small pots are best. I use African Violet fertilizer from Schultz I believe. I use the amount to encourage growth and I use it everytime I water. They seem to be thrilled with that.

I have them in my greenhouses (the little three shelf units with plastic covers) that I normally use for starting flowers/veggies for the garden. They have plenty of light (standard flourescent bulbs). They are probably not too rootbound, so maybe I need to repot in smaller pots.

Maybe I need to increase my solution of fertillizer? Right now I use about half of what they recommend (didn't want to go overboard).

Hey, maybe you should take over this cubit. Doesn't seem to be anyone else here but you and I!

lol I am noticing that. Let me get you the #'s they need. This is what I use on mine http://store.orchidenterprise.com/fertilizer-peters-av-08oz.... The numbers are 12-36-14 its also really close to Bloom boosters (can be found at walmart) You dont have to keep them in the greenhouses they dont need as much humidity as we think. If your climate is dry you can set them on stones in a dish of water as long as you dont set them down in the water. I hope that makes sense lol

I keep them in the greenhouse because I have two cats! The plants are safe in there.
