Quilting is easy.. if you can sew a straight stitch on the machine or draw a straight like with a ruler.
putting a top together is easy.
Crochet is much harder Whistling

well, I got my top sewn together okay (kinda straight lines! Hilarious! ) its the actual machine quilting of it that has me hesitant to continue. I've only done tied quilts before, so its a learning curve for me to learn to do the top stitching and one I want to practice a bit before I tackle DS's quilt top. My biggest problem is I tend to start out with large and expensive projects instead of practicing on smaller ones first Hilarious!

You can do it! If you have extra fabric, just put some squares together and start stitching.
That is why seam rippers are our best friend, We make mistakes too!

Annmarie,
Im not much for machine quilting , I have tried it a time or to just cant seem to get the flat back that I like. always seems to get a ripple or 2
I like hand quilting in a frame much better it may take a little longer but I like the finish

I'm with you Cheryl, if I want something machine quilted I will have someone with a long arm machine do it form me, but I love to hand quilt. It is relaxing.

I even tie some quilts. Whistling

Hilarious! I learned the 'tie' thing from watching mom...but I dont like doing those anymore. Hurts my hand too much! Hilarious!

My plan is to make him some kind of matching pillow sham and practice quilting on the pillow sham first. I think the sham will be done in the same fabric but maybe in a log cabin design instead. I havent really decided yet Hilarious! I'll try machine quilting it and if I dont like it I'll do the hand quilting. I wont mind hand quilting it cuz I can sit in front of the TV and quilt at night. I really wanna get this quilt done before winter gets here but we'll see!

Here is a pix of the quilt top for those of you who haven't seen it. I'd like to do a simple outline of a bear, fish, moose etc in the center of each block and then some kind of stitching on the rest of the top.But I dont know what kind of stitching to do there yet Thumb of 2010-10-26/1AnjL/632d15

what top stitching would you two suggest? the blocks are 12" and in the center 4" of each block is where I'll do the outline of fish, bear, moose, deer etc. so I need some kinda top stitching on the rest of the squares. I was thinking the whirly squirly design that just meanders and stay away from the center blocks but I just dont know fhow it'll look

A meandering pattern will be great, Annmarie. It will somehow lends softness to the squares.

I am tossing around hand sewing the motiffs in the center, or machine sewing. I have one of those baby lock ellure plus sewing machines, but I dont really know all the paramaters of using it! Hilarious! there is supposed to be some program I can buy that will sew the motiffs on for me, but I think Im more comfortable just sewing those myself!

Someone else somewhere mentioned the meandering stitches on the top. I' going to do 2 shams, one with the same blocks and one with a log cabin design using the same material. I'll decide if I like the meandering with the motiffs on the smaller sham before I start messing up the big quilt! Hilarious!

so now I have a question. When you are sewing the meandering stitsches....do you draw them on the quilt top first? or just use the walking foot on the machine and let it go where it wants? I told you all I am brand new to the top stitiching!! Hilarious! Hilarious!

The walking foot is to help control sewing the quilt. The quilt will still need your hands to guide that foot!! Big Grin
I'd suggest drawing the lines since you're new at this. Check your stitches too, might have to ease up on the tension a tad. Unless Ellure offers automatic tension.

thanks! I'm noting all these down! Hilarious! My plan is to get started on it all on Monday. I should be finished up with my other projects by then and it is getting so cold here at night that I'm certain DS would like a heavier blanket back on his bed Hilarious!
