OK Folks, We're doing it! We've been working on the database for this cubit and think we've got it figured out. Beginning today, Carol and I have started entering your information into the Ancestry and Genealogy Database. If you have photos, we will be copying them so those can be attached to the families also.

Each family will have it's own page. We will copy the information you've posted in the comment section (along with a direct link to the post) so the more you add, the more information that will be available in the database. Now is the time to check your info for accuracy and make any additions you want to show up.

So we don't double up on the entries, we had to devise a way to know who was doing what. Once each family has been completely entered, your post will be edited in the SUBJECT line to include a (*). This lets us know that it's been done. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE if you edit your post later and wish that information to be included in the database, let us know about it. If you don't tell us, there's no way we will know. You can send a cmail with a link to the post and a short note of what you've edited.

Once we've got all of the families in we will open up the database and may allow the cubit members to enter their own information. We haven't decided on that for sure yet. We want our database to be as accurate as it possibly can and the fewer "hands stirring the pot" the less chance of errors being input.

Be patient with us as we get the information entered. You all are gonna love this!!!

OH, and if any of you have any suggestions, now is the time to bring them up and not AFTER we've entered every one of these families. Big Grin

Jan,

This sounds fantastic. Are you saying we can log into here and we don't have to pay for Ancestry.com?

There are not enough hours in the day....Yes?

Hap

As I said, Will plan to sign up for Ancestry after my Vay-cay next week. Again, thanks for all the personal encouragement and then this site.

Hugs.

Muahahahahahahaha Oh Nancy! Surely you jest!!! Ancestry has been doing this for years. While ours won't be nearly as extensive as theirs, we will do our best to make it special for us all here. And over time, who knows... We might just kick some "Ancestry" butt! Yeah right! Hey, I can dream as big as the next guy!

Seriously though.... We are working hard on our own families right now, so we can see what tweaks are still needed.

While we get our families entered and the tweaks worked out, it would be a great time for folks to do some updating on their families with anything you want to include. If you upload photos, be sure to include something to identify it so that will follow the photo as a caption.

Thanks to everyone for your participation in this program. We are looking forward to offering this to you and will be showing some screen shots soon of what you all can expect it to look like. We are delighted with it so far!

You want us to just give you some name and place of birth? What else would no need?

Nancy,

The more you can give us, the more likelihood of someone finding your information and connecting. You can add photos of people and houses.

Knowing the country your ancestors came from is always a bonus. If you know the location IN that country, we're talking icing on the cake!

Anytime you know Alternate Spellings for a family name, that is a big help too. Here's an example:
My grandfather was Ernest Rudacille. His father was Philip Rudaciller. Way back down the line, they spelled it Rudisil.

If you have stories you'd like to share, we'll be happy to add them to your family.

Something I found out I can do is to add MINI 5 generational Pedigree View trees for my ancestors. Since I don't have a full blown Family Tree Maker, I used these trees throughout the book I prepared for my family. Here is an example of them. I can upload this file and then create a link for you to view it. Janet's Pedigree which I've included in the Bass Family. Bass is my maiden name.

These are just a few of the things you can add to your family names thread. If you know your ancestor was in the Civil War, a Regiment and location is always a neat find for someone that stumbles across your family name.

It's good to think outside the box. Not only what am I looking for, but what would be neat for others to find. The internet allows folks to share information and locate family members that they might not otherwise ever find.

Thanks to these types of sites, I've made contact with many cousins on both my family and my husband's family. We still write back and forth when we get new information. One lady in particular that is my husband's cousin has shared a tremendous amount of information and photos about the West family. She's been doing research for many years and has found someone else researching 4 out of 4 of the old time brothers. We shared our information via flash drives. There was just too much of it to put on a CD, or in an email.

I hope this helps you with ideas on what to put in there for your family.

Just to echo what Janet said. The more information you post the more likely it is that someone somewhere will spot the link and contact you.

Yesterday I had an email from someone who had stumbled on an entry I posted on a message board last year. It turns out we are 5th cousins, our 5Xgreat grandmother is the same person. We swopped notes all day yesterday and we both learned a lot we didn't know about the family in the early 18th century. I'm really excited because it has helped me knock a chink in one of my "brick walls", but it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't posted a name place and period on that web-site.

Don't expect instant contacts - they may happen but its more likely to be a month or so down the line. One thing is sure though the more information you give the more likely you are to find a contact.

And echoing what Janet and Carol said....
Do not be discouraged if it takes years to get a hit.
When you first start you add data VERY quickly..... hopefully confirmed data.

As your Tree grows it will start to slow down.
You WILL hit Brick Walls!
Unless of course you are next in line for the throne of England or about to marry in..... lol!

I recently received a tip that helped break down a wall.
The tip came from a late Cousin and Very Dear Friend.
In the early days she visited court house after court house.
At each place she left a card.. many times in Census Books that had not been opened in years.
On the card her name, address and the lines she was searching.
She died 3 years ago..... last Summer someone, a 3rd cousin, found one of her cards.
She contacted the address. Carol's Daughter forwarded it on to me.
I now have a Family Bible scan starting in 1857 and ending 45 years ago.
In it dozens of children who were born and died in between the census periods.
Many second wives/husbands and adopted children.
More importantly 2 orphaned adopted children who are in my direct line.
Adopted by his brother. All this time I had the wrong parents.

The card left in the census book by Carol was dated 1993.

Susan,

I am so sorry the link timed out. Sometimes I have problems timing out too. Mainly when I am trying to upload photos. It gets frustrating. I am sure it's my modem or my router. Surely it's not my computer!!! I just started using this one about a month or so ago.

I've already uploaded that link into my family's name, so if you can't get it to work now, it will be available soon on the database.

Ric, that is one of the neatest stories I've heard. Congratulations on the awesome find. I plant seeds wherever I go about my family. When I was working on the books gung ho I am sure some folks got tired of hearing about it. Who cares??? I got so much accomplished that I feel it was worth it. Now I am able to put the work I did to good use again with this database.

I'm really excited about it and can't wait to share it!

Can I ask those of you with photographs posted in the Family Names forum to repost them to your name record in the database? I am asking this for copyright reasons. If Janet or I copy and post your pictures they will carry our copyright stamp, not yours and this is obviously wrong! So in this instance can you do it yourself please!

You will know your name record is set up if there is an * in front of the title on your threads. So far we have 64 family names entered. The others are coming but I have to go feed the family sometimes, amongst other things!

We're up to 81 Family Names now. My eyeballs hurt after sitting here for several hours, so it's time to rest them. I'll get back to work on this later on.

I've written notes to some of you to try and clarify locations for strings of family names. Please enter your family names one line at a time. It makes it so much easier to ensure accuracy when entering the families.

Thanks everyone for your participation and cooperation! It's moving right along and will only get better!

YEAH!!!!!!! Carol and I have completed our task of entering the family names you all have entered for us. Hurray! Hurray! We can both breathe easier now. We know this is just the beginning of this journey into our past. We welcome new families into the treasure chest of our ancestors.

NOW, it's up to you all to check them for accuracy and see if you can dig up some photos for your relatives. Any other information you'd like to have in there, there is a comment section where you can add additional comments.

Remember, the photos you add will be approved (after you've added them). It's not that we don't trust YOU, it's the folks who might try and harm the integrity of the database that we are concerned about.

As my Daddy used to tell me, "Cover your Butt!" Big Grin

One of the best things you can do to help this database grow and find more relatives is to spread the word. I've set up a Facebook Fan Page at this link. http://www.facebook.com/pages/manage/#!/pages/Ancestry-and-G... So far, only 5 people have "fanned" the link, Crying but I was very selective about who I shared it with until I got the names into the database. I wanted to have it ready though for "business".

We've been told that the more links to our cubits that are out there, the better Google will view us and send folks our way. So please.... tell your friends. Tell them to tell THEIR friends.... This will only increase the chances of your finding more relatives.

Our Ancestors would be proud of us today for the work we do to connect with our families and preserve their good names...

Lest They Be Forgotten...

Janet

Boy-o-boy, as in wow, you've taken a big bite to chew, lol. I just came across a website for the name Hardesty-Hardisty. She comments something about 15,000 entries.

Here's your link.

You're right. That is an outstanding record for the Hardesty family. I've always thought so and made sure that link got posted in the Hardesty family record in the COMMENT section.

Do we want to start posting "family specific" sites like these in our links (in addition to the family records in the database)? I have no problem adding them to the Links on the right panel, but the Links might get a little overwhelming eventually if we start doing that. Some links might get lost in the shuffle of discussions.

I'm open to new ideas and suggestions.

I can add a new field to the database to include family web sites if you like.
