I'm looking for information of the Tait and Amos families. The Tait's were supposedly foresters on the Cavers Estate in Hawick Scotland. Agnes Amos was the daughter of a Gilbert Amos, who eloped with one of the Tait's. He moved to upstate New York with his children in 1819. We believe that Agnes must have died previous to this. We have been told there are ties to Archibald Campbell Tait, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1860's. Any assistance would be appreciated, Deb

I have an Agnes Amos born 1806 Cavers, Hawick Roxburghshire, and living at Hamlet Of Haggisha Burnflat House on the 1871 Scotland census. She is married to a Robert Amos born Farningham Roxboroughshire in 1804. I also have an Agnes Tait born 1810 Cavers, Hawick, Roxboroughshire living at Hamilton Lanarkshire Scotland in 1881 Address: Crosspark Mc Ghie St She is with her daughter Robina Scott and her son-in-law Walter. Both of these are probably not your folk though if they were in New York in 1819. Scotland isn't easy to dig into as all its records are separate from England and Wales but if Gilbert left her behind she could be one of them. You could probably get more information by searching on Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ they have 6 marriages for a Gilbert Amos, but none to a Tait, and 6 baptisms. There is a fee for these search results in detail, so that is all I can get from there, but its a small fee and probably worth your while Carol

Thanks, again, Carol. I know Agnes Amos was born in the late 1700's. The oldest of the children that came to the US with their father in 1819 was in his early 20's, so she would have probably been born in the late 1770's. Her father was a Gilbert Amos. I will check out the Scotlands People site. Deb
