And after you watch that, search 'It gets better' on YouTube & see some of the amazing, heartwarming testimonials from sooooo many others.

Been there, lived that, & for me it did get better. Especially when I learned to respond to the 'You're going to hell' folks... 'Promise you won't be there?' Big Grin

I cried all the way through that. It's not just religious bigotry; it's just hatefulness toward anyone perceived to be different. I was just a skinny little girl who didn't fit in and whose parents didn't either. I was mercilessly teased and called names. But I know firsthand the anguish of 'coming out' for a sensitive young man raised in a Catholic family and working in a high testosterone environment. Thankfully, he was accepted by family and friends when he did. Kudos to Joel for speaking out as he did. I need to call the gay councilman here and suggest he make a similar speech.

Oh yes. I know it well. I was tormented mercilessly at school from about the 5th grade till I graduated high school. Left me psychologically scarred for many years.

Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

Well, I come from a family that did not accept or support my difference, and I'll tell you, it's a 'special privilege' having masses said to save your eternal soul... Rolling my eyes.

Ain't we all...

But the point here being... using religion to justify bullying, bigotry, and killing. 'Cause even though those bottom feeding oxygen thieves didn't tie the knot, didn't pull the trigger, their hatred resulted in someone's death.

I stood in my state capital during hearings on HIV/AIDS during the initial outbreak and heard xtian testimony like "I'd rather my son be dead than gay!"

I had a friend in college committed to a mental ward by her xtian family 'cause she was a lesbian.

I had a 20-something friend in the 80's abducted by her xtian family to 'realign' her orientation... kept under 'house arrest'.

It's absolutely no surprise to me that young people kill themselves when faced w/adults like that.

I am sooo glad I'm going to hell...

For as dark & low as I got during my teens, it was nuttin' compared to what some have been through, are going through. But I did refine my stubborn streak, & can give as good as I get if you catch me on the wrong day... on the other days, it's like you say woofie... hate to fight w/unarmed precambrian cold-blooded bottom feeding reptilian brained slow moving proto-roaches w/underdeveloped uni-chambered cardiac organs.

IM oh so Humble O

Maybe that's not quite how you said it, but I read the subtext... Rolling on the floor laughing

"underdeveloped uni-chambered cardiac organs" is soooooo right. No way could those creatures be described as having a "heart." snarl.

Bi-valve would be a compliment... course, they live on fish waste, but at least their digestive system is a little evolved. If the way to a person's heart is through their stomach, at least there's a little something to work with. Hilarious! Just gotta wean 'em off the fish poop. Rolling on the floor laughing

It's all about choices.
And being 5'9" tall in the 6th grade brought all kinds of mocking and taunting...the 'boys' called me Hippo...and I was not fat.

I did get my revenge....years later I was dating a First Class Midshipman when a plebe (freshman) looked really familiar to me...and it turned out to be the stinking little runt who called me Hippo. Well now...I was unforgiving and vindictive....so I told my date who managed to make that Plebe's life HELL on wheels all year.

YAY. People can be so cruel to eachother.... I wonder what book they learned that from? Whistling

Applause to BBC for covering this, & to the UK for having a Forced Marriage Unit... can you imagine it in the US?

We just turn a blind eye to forced marriage & clitoridectomies...
We're much more interested in preventing people who want to from getting married. Rolling my eyes.
Because, of course, the ONLY reason to have sex is to produce children. Whistling

Her story just turns my stomach. Poor girl, I hope that she has some measure of peace and love now, she deserves at least that much. As much as it hurts to believe your parents hate you, I think it's probably even more hurtful to have to hate them.

It comes amazingly easy, actually. But if you mean harmful... yes, because it damages your ability to trust anyone.

I just keep thinking of my friend who was abducted by her xtian parents.... did she have to go through something like this? Sad

It's all about choices.
I think that indifference towards parents or a parent is a probably the healthy stage...hate still brings up emotions of some kind and guilt and...and.... Indifference is peaceful. That article proves that families are NOT sacred nor sacrosanct ...

No, I didn't mean difficult, just painful. It's got to color your world in so many subtle ways, as well as the obvious pain and loneliness.
