Because there is so much news, we need a second thread. We came from here... http://cubits.org/Atheists/thread/view/33903/ I'm starting this one w/the OK amendment against Sharia law being considered during court cases... http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/10/28/oklahoma.sharia.quest... whoever woulda thunk OK would be in the forefront of preventing Sharia in this country? And in other news... The great pontificator, Obama, told the Republicans--who are expected to gain control of the House & possibly the Senate-- that they could "come along for the ride, but they would have to sit in the back." Where's the firestorm? If McCain had said that, there'd be marches & effigy burnings... nuh-uh, Barry Baby, that's rude, crude & unacceptable. And no way to work w/others. Go sit in the corner.... I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.

Just in case you've missed some of the more shining moments of the campaign trail 2010.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11632879 I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.

I can't believe he said that. And I wish he didn't mean it - can we please get someone in office who knows how to work with people???? In the end, only kindness matters. Art and Artists & The Reading Room http://cubits.org/thereadingroom/

I remember being taught in grade school that our gov't was set up the way it was to encourage dialogue & compromise, so that no one group would run rough shod over others. And now, I'm almost praying for grid lock... I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.

Prevent 'em from creating more dep'ts & policies that spend more money we don't have... Sort of like, used to be when you were stuck in traffic, at least you weren't spending money at Macy's. I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.

| Here's a case to watch: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/10/30/20101030ar... The line between church and state is getting thinner and thinner. I believe in parents' rights to get the best education possible; I just don't believe tax money - or tax relief - should be used to send children to religious schools. | Proverbial devil & the deep blue sea, eh? I'm with you, Carol... so much the same thing all over. We've been spending the evening investigating our choices here... some running unopposed... there's so little substantive beyond vague promises, no real plans to reduce spending, increase revenue other than taxes... or they're total whack jobs... one write in candidate for governor has not lt. gov. running w/him, is suing the state 'cause apparently office holders are supposed to buy a bond when they take the oath of office that is forfeit if they break that office & no one has actually done that since the '60's here, so by the state constitution they are all holding office illegally. Mostly we ended up choosing the ones that had no current legal charges filed against them. I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders. |

Jay, when I was younger, I used to vote based on whether or not I'd ever heard of the candidate (for local stuff). I figured if I'd never heard of him/her, then s/he probably hadn't done anything bad, and that is who I voted for "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss

Isn't it just the pits? I HAD a friend (accent on the HAD) who was going to vote for Bush because he (W.) and Laura were so cute together. AGH It's when they get down to the one syllable words that I pack my bags!! Leap. The net will appear.

It's an impossible choice here too. Meg Whitman, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, probably is a horrible choice, but the alternative is Jerry Brown. I've already lived through one Jerry Brown administration and I dread the thought of another one. He sounds just like your guy, Carol -- skipping merrily through the financial debacle in California, hand in hand with the teachers union, promising it the moon. The last time he was the governor, he authorized three property reassessments in four years. My property taxes quintupled in those four years. The value of my house most certainly did not. My retired neighbors on fixed incomes were on the verge of losing the houses they'd bought decades earlier. That led to the taxpayers' revolt known as Prop 13. Jerry Brown fought tooth and nail against Prop 13, but it passed anyway. Believe it or not, he's now taking credit for Prop 13, reminding people that it was passed while he was in the governor's office, but neglecting to mention that it was passed in spite of his presence there. He's such a weasel. I suppose I'll do what I've done in earlier elections. I'll vote on the propositions and the local candidates and leave the rest of the ballot blank. I've already had to do that in the last three presidential elections.

| Understand the sentiment completely, Zuzu. This time around, I'd probably go fiscally conservative if there was an actual choice. I do think a mix of Dems & Reps keeps things a little saner. I checked my local representative (we're not voting on that office this time) & I like a lot of what he votes for, but Dang! he keeps voting for higher taxes. Learned a lot about state land commissioner here last night... y'all might look into that. It's another way for the state to raise money w/out raising taxes on everyone. Some folks in our area got hit w/3-fold property tax increase this time 'cause of an accounting error. WHAT?! That's so not fair... couldn't they at least figure out a way to spread it out over a few years? | We had so darn many initiatives on our ballot; took me a couple of weeks of major research to decide on them. Ended up changing my initial inclination on most of them. And since our only choice for several local offices was to vote for one Republican or another, well I just can't bring myself to do that. And I also can't bring myself to vote for an idiot just because they label themselves a democrat.....so there were a lot of blank boxes on my ballot. Sigh. We did watch the Jon Stewart Rally.....a bit slow to begin with, but it was fun, and his closing statement was wonderful. Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid. |

Mmm - I'm sorry I missed it - I had no idea it would be on C-span. But I really enjoy Stewart. How was the Colbert side? In the end, only kindness matters. Art and Artists & The Reading Room http://cubits.org/thereadingroom/

Ya know, in some ways Colbert is funnier than Stewart, although I prefer Stewart. But then I'm kind of stuffy. The link that Carol posted has some video clips. I think we recorded it on the DVR, not sure if we got it all tho. Pretty cool that there were no commercials, too. Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

I'm sick of the smugness of the Democrats & that they're in the pocket of the unions, & I can't stand the self-righteousness of the Republicans & that they insult my intelligence w/candidates like Palin, O'Donnell, and Rand Paul. I've joined the party of the Purely Disgusted. I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders.

I'm a PPD as well. A school yard of 4th graders are about as inspiring of confidence. Leap. The net will appear.
