Twenty days ago I put 5 bantam eggs under my broody game hen, Saphire. I was not expecting any hatch until tomorrow but I was suprised today to find 2 little chicks in the nest. She still has 3 eggs under her. There is still a good chance for 2 of them but I don't hold out much hope for the 3rd. I noticed a "dent" in it about a week ago so I figure it was compromised and won't hatch. I imagine it happened when one of the other girls snuck in to lay while Saphire was out getting a drink or a bite to eat. I have taken a stray egg out of the nest on several occasions. At any rate, she will be happy having 2 little peeps to care for. I have to get a small water pan in there for them tomorrow and remember to bring some crumbles for them.
Here is the pic. It is not the best. I had to hold saphire under one arm and try to get a pic with the other hand. Stooping over is hard for me so it was a challenge. :)

I ended up with 3, 2 white and the little gray one. then DH's nasty menacing puppy killed one of the yellow ones so the pup lives on a chain now. i wish he lived at somebody else's house.
The other 2 are doing fine. I hope they are both pullets. They are bantams.

He is a pain in my rump! He is the one somebody put in our house while we were gone! I wanted to take him to the pound but DH fell for him and he is still here but he has to stay on a chain now.

The two chicks are doing fine. They have gotten big enough to "wean" and are now in a small cage of their own. Saphire is back in with the flock and started laying again yesterday. The white chick is definitely a rooster but I am not sure about the blue one. It took much longer for it to get a comb but looks like it is getting one now.
I am a bit worried about the white roo. Today I found he had tried to eat a fine string and it was halfway down his gullet. I pulled out as much of it as I could and was afraid to pull too hard. So I cut it off and he swallowed the rest of it. I hopr he is able to pass it.

The little white roo, Lightning, is doing fine and this morning he is trying to crow. Still undecided as to whether the blue chick is a pullet or a roo. I am praying for a pullet.
Zero roosters would suit me fine. I have two accidental roosters: they were supposed to be Jersey Giant pullets but grew up to be Minorca roosters (?) They are not aggressive with people, are relatively gentle with the hens, and I like to hear them crow, but I was happy when I had all hens. Sending you pullet vibes!

I would love for the blue chick to be a pullet because it's blue and I have wanted a blue chicken forever. If It's a roo I will get rid of it. I have the bantam roo I want to keep already.

The blue chick was a roo also and he went home with Rayden. A friend gave me a solid white pullet just a bit older than the two roos and she went with Ray also. Now he has a pair of bantams. He maned the roo Smokey but I cannot remember what he named the pullet. I'll have to ask. The white roo went home with Knock. He named him Lightening. He already has a bantam hen named Cloudy.
So, I am down to 2 bantams, a black hen and my roo named Trey.

Maybe next year you can get eggs from Ray and have a second chance of getting a blue pullet. It's always good when you can redistribute extra fowl to someone who wants them.
