Please pray for my DH. He has had another spot erupt on his foot. It is infected and he has cellulitis. Went to the hospital today and they cultured it and started him on antibiotics.

God is answering prayer. We got a good report from the doc yesterday. It's superficial and no deep tissue or bone involvement. He is on 2 antibiotics now and the prognosis is good. PTL!!!!

The new spot has MRSA, Strep B and a rare bacterial infection I cannot pronounce and have never heard of. It's a "hospital infection".
He got a PICC line today for IV antibiotics. Had his first dose today. Has to have it for the next 14 days at least. A bone scan on Thursday. Praying it is not in the bone.

The bone scan reults were not what we hoped for. The infection is in the bone. The IV meds have been extended for 4 more weeks at least and he starts HBO again on Monday. That will be 4 to 6 weeks also.

Thanks. The foot is looking better but all the hours at the hospital and spent lying on the couch are beginning to wear on him. Please keep him in your prayers. I'd appreciate being remembered too. I feel like i have the weight of the world on me at times.

It has been quite a while since I updated this thread. The ulcer healed over and we thought all was well. Unfortunately, 8 days later it errupted again worse than before. He was having fever and chills and his blood sugar and BP were through the roof in spite of heavy doses of meds. He was admitted to the hospital and had a toe amputated. He was in the hospital for a week. Last Tuesday he completed another 6 week round of infusion of IV meds and HBO. He now holds the record for the most dives in the hospital's hyperbaric oxygen chamber, 110. Thursday he went back to his foot doctor and had a skin graft done.
The foot looks great. The doctor is very pleased with it and is expecting good results from the graft. With the infection clearing up DH's BP and blood sugar levels are staying down. In fact, DH has had to reduce his insulin doses because his glucose is dropping too low.
I want to thank you for your prayers and support through this very difficult and scarey time. I could not have survived it without you holding me up in prayer before the Lord.

The foot went south again after this post. Had to have surgery again. They took 2 bones out and had complications. He had to have 8 units of blood. Was in the hospital for a week. Gave him too much fluid and his lungs filled up. They pulled over 8 liters of fluid, 16#, off in 24 hours. Kidneys are in trouble from the extended vanc treatment. 50% output and high protien.
He was readmitted to the hospital this afternoon. More infection but not in the bone. Soft tissue, different spot and different infection. He is getting IV meds but different medication.
We need prayer. I am beyond stressed with my Momma having a brain tumor and now this.

We got our answers and it's not what we wanted to hear but it is what it is. The bone in his foot is gangrenous. His foot has to come off. They will be taking it in the morning. Doc said the procedure should only take 20 minutes are so. I was suprised about that. There is a real possibility of the infection traveling to his heart, brain or liver and causing a gangrenous ulcer that would kill him.
Doctor says he will get a temporary prosthesis in a couple weeks and then a permanent one. Doc is expecting a full recovery after the amputation.

The amputation went smoothly and he is healing nicely. He has adjusted very well with God's help. It has been just over a month now and for 2 weeks he has been wearing a stump shrinker which is working well. It has reduced the stump by an inch. One inch to go and then he can be fitted for a temporary prostetic. There is once small stubborn spot that does not want to close so he will see wound care next week for it.
He has the use of a motorized scooter but I am trying to make a ramp to be able to get it into the van.
His kidneys are still compromised and we are a bit worried about that. They are doing a bit better but still have a ways to go.
His blood count has come up a bit but is still way down. Found blood in his stool so he is scheduled for a colonascopy on the 13th. Please pray God heals all these problems.

We have the use of a portable ramp for the scooter. It is so nice to be able to take the scooter with us now so I don't have to push DH around. It's nice he can be more independant too.
DH slipped and fell yesterday. Not slipped, really. He was trying to pet one of the mares while I was feeding the chickens. He reached out to hold onto a ledge and before he got hold of it his walker fell over. He was able to direct his fall so he didn't hit his stump. Made his shoulder a bit sore but he is no worse for the wear. PTL!!
Went to the wound care doc today and he pared all the old scab off so the tissue underneath can finish healing. He was very pleased with the progress of the incision.
The prostetic man sent 2 smaller stump shrinkers in the mail. The stump has shrunk 1 1/2" so far. Just 1 more inch to go. Then as soon as the wound is completely closed, they will fit him with a temporary leg. It is all so exciting.

It will give him his life back. He is looking forward to riding Ben next year. I will surely take pics of their first ride.
DH went on a little trip today by himself. I could not get away from the house because I had too much to get done so he went to the store by himself. He went to the van on his scooter and got in. I loaded his scooter in case there was somebody there to unload it for him. There wasn't so he went into the store with his walker and sat around and visited for a while. He came back home later and went up the walk and ramp onto the porch with his walker. I got his scooter out of the van so he would have it in the house. He had a nice little outing. Small things like that make him feel confident and picks up his spirits.
