Recently, a shop owner foiled an armed robbery by producing a gun and wounding one of the felons. After returning from a short pursuit of the second felon, he was reported as putting six more holes in the injured felon as he was lying on the floor. Whether it was anger, racism or the Dirty Harry complex, he has been convicted of first degree murder and stands a good chance of spending most of his remaining life in prison. Either he was a very poor shot or he never learned to shoot to kill when one is pointing a gun at him. One round in center mass will usually end the conflict.

A state legislator recently pointed her loaded raspberry-pink, laser equipped pistol directly at the chest of another person as a demonstration. Loaded or not, safety-equipped or not, that was not the move of a person who should be allowed to touch a gun, let alone carry one.

There was a story of a person killing her child while she was removing her rifle from her vehicle. The rifle in question was a Remington 700 which was proven to have a defective trigger sear mechanism but, and there was little said on this point, what moron carries a weapon with a chambered cartridge in a vehicle?

These are only three stories of unqualified persons, out of the millions of gun owners who are aghast at some of the stupid stunts of a handful of idiots, which are fodder for the anti-gun crowd. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms carries a heavy load of responsibility, a factor many people do not understand.

This morning's St. Louis PD carried a story of a 3 year old son of a police officer killing himself with a handgun he apparently found in his home. It was a personal weapon, not his service handgun. The same paper also carried a mention of a 3 year old girl finding a handgun 'hidden between two mattresses' and killing herself.

There have been many instances of children killing another family child or a playmate. The story is always the same--a loaded handgun left where a child can find it and make a toy of it.

The NRA and its audience of Old West gunslingers nearly destroyed a major firearms manufacturer for proposing all firearms, especially handguns, be equipped with trigger locks. I seem to recall even some major city police departments refused to purchase guns from the company.

I am a firm believer in the right of everyone to have firearms in their homes for their own protection. When someone is trying to kick open your door, you do not have a lot of wait and see time before the police can arrive. You should have time to push a magazine into and charge a handgun. There are few places where you can hide a loaded weapon that small children cannot find it. You would not place a can of gasoline along with a box of matches where a child could play with them but you would leave a loaded handgun lying around where it could be found.

Another incident in the general area--a 10 year old killed his 5 year old brother with a shotgun while they were alone in a room.

10 year old boy was killed by his 7 year old sister in an accidental shooting inside a parked RV. Police said there were several guns laying about with easy access. Happened about 12 miles south of Salem.
