We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Criteria for keeping seedlings varies tremendously from breeder to breeder. I do not believe in releasing a variety unless it is easy to grow, meaning vigorous. Kenora Challenger would probably have been culled from our seedlings after a year or two as it does not grow very vigorously. It did not pass in the trial garden back when, probably for the same reason. Now looking back on it, should it have been released? It has won best in show awards numerous times including at least two National shows. Would I recommend the variety to anyone but an enthusiastic show exhibitor? Nope. Comments?
