Thanks, Rose! Yes, I just started this cubits about 3 weeks ago. I rehab ducks mostly American Wood ducklings. I raise them, then release them and then cry ;o) I am an RN and have a small gardening business but this job (though I don't get paid) is by far my favorite! I cannot remember how many birds we have raised, cared for while injured or taken when the owner no longer wanted, but the most that we have had at one time was 19. Hubby and I are the only wood duck rehabbers in our area and almost the only ones in the state. Wood ducklings are very hard to raise...but no one told us when we started so we have not had many problems and release more than 80% that we have had.

We have had other waterfowl like domestic ducks and Dudley a Canada Goose, shown above; we were told he was a wood duck...not even close. We have also raised Eurasian Collared Doves because a woman thought they were ducks and hubby did not have the heart to tell her otherwise. Also raised Mourning Doves, American Robins and a several other birds because we were asked to help. But if possible, we stick to only waterfowl.

The duckling in the picture with me is Eliza Ducklittle. We got her when she was less than 24 hours old (she still had her egg tooth) and we were both sound asleep and hubby sneaked in and took our picture. She stayed with us for 8 months...she just was not ready to leave home. She is now grown and gone with her husband Henry (The names came from the movie My Fair Lady---Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins) and they have had hatched many ducklings together. We live on a creek that runs into the lake about 1/2 block from our home. The ducks stay on the lake most of the time, so we get to see them a lot!

Nice photo, Neil! Our ducks enjoy swimming with snakes and muskrats! I guess they are just curious...

For real? They not afraid of being eaten.

That a beautiful picture. So serene. Would make a lovely postcard. Have you ever considered maybe making and selling a Duck calender.

LOL I have had photos published in calendars but never thought about making my own...I did not take the above picture, a friend gave it to me.

I don't know why the ducks like with swim with the snakes but they start following them when they are young ducklings...maybe they are just curious or they may want to watch the snakes every move, just in case it has any ideas about a snack ;o)
