A duck is a wonderful adventure!
Time to start a new thread. We came from here http://cubits.org/DucksGeeseandOtherFowl/thread/view/27516/?...

This is Swanson and Swannie (really original names, huh? Hilarious! ) They are 2 of the local mute swans that picked us and our lake...sweetest angles. A mean fisherman hooked Swanson through his bill and he could not open his mouth the eat. We had hoped the hook would rust and break apart but we watched him for what seemed like an eternity starve....which was almost more than I could stand! It took Jeff and me, the local property owners association and the game and fish commission to catch him and remove the hook. But he loved us even more after that. However, this spring they decided to leave our lake. We do not have any idea where they went and are hoping the will return...but...they were both boys (I think) and probably found a couple of nice girls to woo and will follow them everywhere...most likely to the river and not back here Sad At least, we were part of their lives for three or four years! And they are happy....which is all that matters!

That's a lovely story, and a heartbreaking one as well. Our feathered and furry friends in the wild are vulnerable to our sometimes uncivilized actions, as well as our sometimes misplaced good intentions. Just this morning, my heart ached when I saw a dead deer on the side of the road, no doubt hit by a car.

But as you say, they are both probably happily living life somewhere else now. Your photo is really a beauty!

I am so sorry that I have neglected my cubit! Over the past few months things have really turned upside down! Which is really not a very good excuse! My health has improved...actually, I never felt sick but I was...and then I really got sick! This year, I have been helping a couple of people start raising ducks...and ponds...and housing...etc. I promise to post some pix in the next day or two! In the mean time, if any of you have any new pix to share please post them. I really enjoy seeing other feather-babies!

I agree, Duckmother. Glad you're back in the swing again. I have no bird pics to add, but I look forward to seeing everyone's.

ThreeG, those are fine looking birds!! I've never seen anything like that before. You continue to surprise me!

Such lovely geese! I had hoped to turn 50 before falling apart but I didn't quite make it Rolling on the floor laughing I have been helping with other duck people's ducks. I hope to have a few pix posted in the next few days. Thanks for sticking with my cubit!

This is the closest I have been to an animal (when I had my camera) in a few months! Not even close to a duck...but it is a photo.

A duck is a wonderful adventure!
I got a call a few weeks ago and was asked to come out to a cemetery where two young ducks had been dropped off at one of the two ponds...just to make certain they would survive. There were Canada geese and Pekin ducks on the pond and two little ducklings...not certain (at the time) what kind but they were only two weeks old at most. We had to be sneaky, but we finally caught them. Once home, we put them in the tub for a nightly bath. The smallest one (Jill) did not have her oil gland developed and began to sink! I was so glad we brought them home. She certainly could not have slept in the water and may not have lasted the night. The next afternoon, I called to let the people know that Jack and Jill were fine and we would most likely return them to the pond because they are Muscovy ducks. I went to the store and bought fruits and green leafy veggies. As with all children, each has a favorite and one they cannot stand. So, what would be their favorite snack? Mom's carrot muffin she has for breakfast! Hilarious! They have learned how to jump up and knock the thing out of my hand...such stinkers. They have been with us for three weeks and are growing like weeds! Probably due to all of the carrots from the muffins! Rolling on the floor laughing

Two weekends ago, we decided to get into our cool tub (hot tub without heater) because it was so hot but we wanted to watch the ducklings swim in their little plastic tub. After some time passed, Jill decided (girls are always the ones to investigate first!) she must see what we were doing. We are fairly certain that she turned around to Jack and said, "You should see the size of Mom and Dad's pool!" Within a few seconds, there were two ducks in the cool tub with us! They spend the day out in the yard in a large cage which has no bottom, so they can eat all the grass, bugs, etc. Plus they have their food, greens, and leafy plants to snack on while we are away. We try to give them crickets and/or worms in the evening to make certain they have protein. Then we walk around the yard looking at all of our very hot, dried up grass and plants, while the ducks enjoy foraging. Once inside, they still take a bath and then dry off on the bathroom floor with me nearby. They will snuggle next to me for a short time but if I don't allow them to go to bed in time, they will begin to cheep and glare at me. They sleep in a box that is next to our bed and will until the day we release them.

They will stay with us for a few more weeks and then we will return them to the cemetery pond. We think they will be fairly safe because there is a fence around the grounds and the area is pretty open, so they can see danger approaching. Yet, there are also trees for shade and protection.
