Hollyhocks may well be annuals, biennials and perennials. To the best of my memory, they do self seed so the chill should not hurt them. I did check my favorite germination database and for Alcea rosea it says: Alcea rosea , hollyhock , ,Type= an , , sow @ 70ºF, grow on @ 55-60ºF , 7-14d

Do you know what you have? Many will bloom the first year if you start them soon enough. I used to sow them indoors. It's been a several years since I've grown them.

i love hh.. they sprout very easily lol.. mine were biennial. get this. i was collecting seeds for my mom.. the ones i have got up to the top of the garage 10 ft so mom wanted them.. well i left them in a jar on my bench.. it rained for 3 days and i forgot about them .. i went out and had a jar packed full of hh seedlings .. i was like ahhh mom wanted those,i had disposed of the stalks already. then i realized i had inadvertently started them for her... she seperated the ball of sprouts and planted them they look great.. this was in sept . i bet they bloom.. i think you have a better chance of bloom if you plant them in late summer/fall then they have more time to grow that big taproot

i am not sure which these are Badseed...they are a rather big seed though. I do not even know what color they are. Someone was generous and shared with me.

That is a funny story Dana, thanks for sharing. I will plant and see what happens.

Oh, I've wintersown a bunch of different Hollyhocks- they are the easiest wintersown seed I've grown! When you get blooms will depend on the type. The doubles I've wintersown behaved as annuals, giving me a gorgeous 1 year display. The singles and fig leaved types I've grown so far have behaved as biennials or short lived perennials.

I didn't know what to expect that first year, but it worked well having the double annuals interplanted with the single biennials- 2 years of good color, and the 2nd year disappearance of the doubles gave the rest room to really fill out. In another area I've run into a snag, getting a nice display one year, none the next, then back to lots of blooms. This is a bloom year, so I'm thinking I should just direct sow some seed in there soon, that should ensure a show next year.

The great thing about gardening is if you don't like it this year, just wait a while....it will change! I will see what these do this year and then next year if there are no blooms again, I will reseed. I also want blooms year round.

Thanks Neal (love your screen name by the way)

Dana, no need to apologize- your pics are wonderful! I love that garden spot- your Roses are lovely! That lattice makes a great place to tie them to.

Julie, I bet yours are doing what mine did, which makes me think you'll have blooms this year.

Oh no Gemini...this will be my first year growing them. What I am thinking is to be sure of blooms every year is that I would have to WS next winter also. Don't you think that would be ok?

I just love hollyhocks and I know where I want to plant them because I have morning glories reseeding in the same area...so a small fence for the morning glories in the front and the HH in the back would look beautiful. At least it does in my sun forsaken mind right now! lol

Julie, that's a great idea, and then I'll bet as they get established you'll have a yearly show without having to seed them- that's what I'm hoping to see happen too.

I've just wintersown some seed for Alcea rugosa, the yellow perennial Hollyhock. This will be the 2nd or 3rd time I've tried them (no germination the first attempts). Wondering if anyone is growing them in the area? Come to think of it, I've only seen them in pictures, so I hope they're suited to our zone.

I WS hollyhocks last year, and I really don't remember just what they were, but I set them out early and they bloomed all summer and into fall. They were black, and really loved the way they looked with some lighter color flowers in front. Can't find the picture I want, but will keep looking.

Growing up the only HH's I had contact w/ were annuals.
So when I got some here and they didn't bloom I figured that was it...
Well they came back strong and bloomed.
So until I get some more I'm pretty much in a 2 year cycle I guess.

Sue, what I have are different, a single species (not a hybrid), and they're supposedly perennial. I believe the doubles you have will be annual, or possible biennial.

Bonnie, do you recall if your black ones were double or single bloomed?

Neal, I had the yellow perennial hollyhock for a while. I loved it! So pretty! And very hardy. As I say that...not sure what happened to it??? LOL!
I like the single hollyhocks myself...rather than the doubles. And I like the perennial kind.
I have LOTS of hollyhocks!!

Marcy, if I have luck with the seeds I've sown, I'll be sure to get some seedlings to you.

Do any of you have Hollyhocks growing in some shade? A neighbor has lovely Hollyhocks that have naturalized in the fence row. One side is exposed, facing the railroad track, but otherwise there's a canopy of trees shading them. I'm surprised they're so happy. They didn't look like they got as buggy as mine either- that kinda ticks me off, LOL.

Some of mine are somewhat shaded Neal. And they seem to do well. I haven't noticed them being less buggy though..lol. The bugs seem to love hollyhock leaves.
Will look forward to some seedlings of the yellow type!

I like growing h.hocks.Easy to wintersow.
I have started h.hocks indoors under grow lights around mid April and transplanted in spring after last frost and bloomed the following summer.
This year I wintersowed firesta time, chestnut brown hocks, charters double violet along with Japanese iris seeds.
This is the first time wintersowing Japanese iris seeds.I will post a photo, later on in the spring and see if I get any sprouts with the japanese iris seeds.
I decided to use my parks bio/dome to wintersow in and see if it works.
Chamois double h.hock, was grown indoors and bloomed the following year.

I really like Carters Double Maroon. That's really cool.

I've never grown hollyhocks. How long do they bloom? Is there such a thing as a fragrant hollyhock? Do they normally have to be staked?

Hello:Val,
Once the hollyhocks start to bloom around June until fall.
I haven't heard of any fragrant h.hocks.
I never had to stake any of my h.hocks.
There is the shorter varieties you can buy in seeds, fiesta time h.hock, majorette h.hocks. Queeny purple. These usually grow about 3 ft.tall.
Summer carnival is another, much taller about 5 ft. tall.

I have a large variety of singles here and they self seed with abandon. They come up through the grass in the yard, in the driveway and of course like crazy in my flower beds. I often find myself pulling them like weeds. I sent ric a package of seeds a couple of years ago but I don't know if he had any luck with them.

I lost my records in a crash.
I hope I thanked you!

They did well for a while and then got 'bugged'.
Nice blooms-horrible looking foliage after the Japanese Beetles got after them.

Thanks again...I hope!

Phyl, I've been wintersowing Zinnias the last couple of years. I've found its best to WS them later, like March or April. The seedlings are frost sensitive, and sometimes if wintersown early they'll germinate during brief warm spells of early spring, and get zapped by spring freezes.
