The winters here in the south of Sweden are normally not as "bad" as up north, but the past two winters we've gotten plenty of snow! In the south we actually have several hours of daylight even in the winter, but up north there's not much for a period of time. Some of my hoya friends up north use artificial light for their hoyas during the winter, but I manage not to. I water less and so far I've managed them even winter time... I hang ceramic "things" (can be seen on photo) on the radiators and fill them with water. When the heat is on during the winter they help raise the humidity some around the plants.
Edited to add that my boyfriend likes cleaning windows... boy am I lucky or what?!
