| Welcome to JBsPlants@Roblyn Farm in New Jersey. Please introduce yourself, relax and enjoy your time here. Most of our chatter is about Holiday Cactus, Christmas Cactus, Thanksgiving Cactus, Easter Cactus and Orchid Cactus. There should be a thread started for each one eventually. This thread is for any questions other than those threads where they concern specific Species or Genus. If you do not know where to find what you are looking for here is the place to start. Do not hesitate to ask questions. If we do not have the answers we will direct you to someone who can answer it. |

| Did you know that when you take cuttings from Christmas/Holiday Cactus you should not cut them with an instrument, you should tear them off by twisting? I read that during my research one day. It is such fun learning new things. If you have anything to share with us here, please do. We are all ears. |
| Hmmm, don't cut...twist...That should make pinching a start when no one is looking easier |
| Look out Lowes and Home Depot, here come the pinchers and twisters. It sure beats knocking down the plant and breaking it off as you pick it up. |

| I must tell you something funny. I have so many large Holiday/Christmas cactus plants in my small home that many times as we clean, or whatever, a piece breaks off. I just usually stick the broken pieces in a little jar of water and after weeks go by I remember to plant them. Never leave the ends seal, nothing, just stick them in water. I had about a dozen plants that I could not identify because I did not mark the plants they fell off of, so here are all these nice little plants but no way do I have a clue what color they are or anything. I decided last week to take a picture of one of them and put if up on eBay as a special sale of Lost Tags Plants. So far I have sold 5 of them. I am only asking about $2.50 a piece for them, but people love stuff like that and the price is right. I take great delight in selling them because they are healthy and adorable but I have no idea what the colors are. The shipping is more than the plants but people are funny when they know they are getting a good buy. Oh well. waste not want not. I never throw a cutting away unless it is down right dead. |
| That is funny! I wouldn't buy anything where the shipping was more than the item...unless I was going to buy up a whole lot of them |

| I have three items listed in the store. OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!!!!! |

| Hi , a question ? Is there an easy way to tell the difference between Christmas , Easter and Thanksgiving cactus? Is it the shape of the leaves or just when they bloom? |
| Cinda, This site gives the clearest and most precise definition of the three that I have ever read and his credentials seem to be worthy of an expert. http://cactus.biology.dal.ca/paulS/christmas/christmas.html |

| I think you are right Zany. I was in the process of putting up the difference and we lost power, so I will try and put up another good easy to look at information as soon as I can. I had it almost finished when I lost it all. Hang in there. I am trying. |

You are right Zany, that is a great resource. Here Is a picture of the different leaves. I will try and give you the explanation that goes with the leaves. These are all Schlumbergera plants. The photo cuts off on here for some reason, R is No. 1, Op is No. 3. Sorry.S.russelliana has rounded and non-angular stem segments (R) smaller than others. blooms from Jan. to Feb. S. orssichiana has wide, large and sharply seerrated stem-segments. It blooms in the end of Aug or Sep. S.truncata has stem segments of similar shape as S,orssichiana but smaller. It blooms in Oct. and Nov. S opuntioides has stem segments looking like No. 3 It blooms in March or April. This information is available here in the article called History of Christmas Cactus. http://cactus-epiphytes.eu/z_page_les_cactus_de_noel.htm I do want to say, it is really difficult to tell some of the Shlumbergeras apart. I have had several I thought were one thing and it turns out they were hybrids, so if you decide to try and tell one of these from the other, good luck. To answer your question, I usually try and research the species to see when it blooms and then I call if whatever I decide it is. Many of the truncatas are Thanksgiving Cactus because they begin blooming in November. This is the only way I think people can tell. That is a very good question and I am sorry I could not give you a better answer, Thanks for dropping by and please come back soon. |

| Thank you very helpful information. and the photo is just fine ,I just click on the image to get the whole picture. |
| How dumb am I??? Click on the picture old girl and you will see the results. You showed us your Schlum on the other forum, now should we try and see which one it is? The leaves look like a S. russelliana, but the true ones are very hard to find unless as with yours, it is so very old. You just may have a true Christmas Cactus. That would be wonderful. Not many left since all the hybrids have come about. |

| The only suggestion I might make JB is listing the zones that your treasures would thrive in best...even if a house plant...Here in my part of Ky we are zone 6 and I don't have a lot of indoor space for all the beauties I see..and want http://cubits.org http://cubits.org/gourds/ http://cubits.org/Diabetes/ http://cubits.org/DMEnterprises/store Tahlmorra lujhala mei wiccan (The fate of a man rests always within the hands of the gods) |

| Good suggestion Dorothy. I have done that with some of them that I have listed in my other stores. I will try and find the time to do that as soon as I can. I appreciate your suggestions. |

| This is true Dorothy, and I usually do it on plants that I know are going to be outside or patio plants, etc. I just never thought of the Christmas Cactus of staying outside but I keep forgetting people live in all zones on these lists and I need to do that. I will research them and add the zones as soon as I have the time. Farm life is a busy life just now trying to keep things alive. Thanks again. I appreciate all the help I can get. I want my babies to be in homes they will be safe and grow. |

| Christmas cactus will grow outdoors here from last frost to first frost then has to be brought into the house where they bloom and are enjoyed through the winter. http://cubits.org http://cubits.org/gourds/ http://cubits.org/Diabetes/ http://cubits.org/DMEnterprises/store Tahlmorra lujhala mei wiccan (The fate of a man rests always within the hands of the gods) |

| I put some of mine outside this Spring (two of them were my best stock plants),,,,a storm came up during the night and blew them off the deck and most of them were damaged and the two good ones totally destroyed. I have just replaced the two a week ago but it will be awhile before I can cut them. I think of putting zones on plants that can be grown both in containers and outside. Not really the typical houseplants. That is why I do not put them on plants that can be put out in the Spring and brought in by Fall. Funny how we all think differently isn't it That certainly needs to be considered when selling. |
