Glad you enjoyed it Brenda. Flowers and fruits on trunks of trees is fairly common in tropical plants. You should see Jack Fruit, larger than very big watermelons hanging down from the trunk and along the limbs of the trees.
Yes, it's very edible, but a bit messy to cut up. It exudes a white latex which is very sticky. You need to coat the knife with some vegetable oil before cutting and the latex doesn't stick so much. The seeds are large and can be roasted or boiled and eaten. Of course, it's easier to buy the fruit already cut up in the markets by the professionals (and let them clean their own mess up ).
