Make sure when you cook beans you don't add salt to the water. I found out the hard way they'll never get soft if you do that.

Be sure to check the Parade magazine in today's paper. There's a coupon in there for a FREE doublicous sandwich with the purchase of a 30-oz drink. Expires 12/5/10.

I've also read not to mix vinegar in with the beans. I forget why.

I think either salt or acid (including tomatoes as well as vinegar) will cause the beans to toughen. I cook them until they're mostly done before adding tomato sauce and other stuff.

Critter, i was reading a bean soup recipe today and they said that both salt & tomatoes would retard the bean cooking process and to add them in the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Shatterproof ornaments... between Joyanna and Eliot, probably not a bad idea! I've got a bunch of antique glass ornaments that I love, but last year we opted to stick with mostly felt, wood, etc. LOL

I was thinking Wendy's post meant a large bowl covered in an overall design of acorns... what a surprise!

I started collecting Christmas cookie cutters when Kelby was born. Eventually, I had over 100 cookie cutters. For years when she was little, I decorated the tree with homemade gingerbread and vanilla cookies. Let me know if you'd like the recipe for the vanilla cookies. They will keep on the tree for a few days, just get harder. I used royal icing that gets hard. I also made gingerbread men and women with their names on them for all the neighborhood kids, gingerbread and vanilla houses.

I also had real candles on the tree. The little candles and holders aren't hard to find. I never lit them, used regular lights, but they looked very pretty on the tree.
