| Many of us have a connection to water, for me there is just a need that only a trip to the ocean will fill. We swim, snorkel, scuba dive, and water ski. Maybe the boating life is your connection, kayak, canoe, speed boat, jet ski, or sail boat. There are those that just love to sit and watch a small stream, rushing river, peaceful lake or the waves at the beach. Water has always been a part of our lives, flowing through and around us a bringer of life, peace and sometimes great excitement. I have started this thread so we can discuss our water inspired activities, sports and hobbies. So if you are a SCUBA Diver like me, a Sailor like Stormy or just love long walks along a peaceful shore please tell your stories, talk about your passion and post your pictures here. Life is Great! | I have always been a water person swimming from an early age. My Mother a non swimmer and afraid of the water decided that I wouldn't be, so down to the local YWCA I went. I took to water like a fish and spent most of my childhood and teen years at the pool. In the winter it was swim team practice 3 days a week and swim meets on Saturdays. In the summer it was the local outside pool where swim team practice was 5 days a week and swim meets on Saturdays. When practice was over I would stay the afternoon picking up lunch at the snack bar and if I was really lucky I could stay for the evening swim, too. No one had to drag me to the pool for practice they could barely drag me out of it. In the summer there were trips to the beach. Of course we called it going to the shore. That's the Jersey Shore. Once every summer we would head down for a week if we were really lucky maybe two. I remember my Mom wrapping me in a big beach towel and telling me I had to get out of the ocean. I was shivering uncontrollably and had blue lips but I swore that I wasn't cold and just really wanted back in. In my 20's it was the local River, Creeks and Lakes that grabbed my attention. Swimming in the lakes and picnics with my young children. Canoe trips in my fathers canoe on the local creeks. The nearby Susquehanna River provided the real excitement, water skiing. Trips to the Ocean were few and far between. Much missed and much anticipated. Life is Great! | With a growing family my time and attention was pulled in many directions. Full time job 4 children a small barn full of animals, horses and ponies for the kids. 4H, Boy scouts, Girl scouts, Gymnastics, Soccer. There were still trips to the beach, picnics at the lakes, exploring the local river and creeks and a small pool in the back yard. Passing along my love of all things born of water to my children. There were new and different beaches to explore. Maryland and Virginia beckoned Assateague & Chincoteague Island. North Carolina's Outer Banks, Duck, Nag's Head, Kitty Hawk and Hatteras Island. Georgia's Jekyll Island. The sunny shores of Florida, Amelia Island, the Gulf Coast and the Keys. We loved all that the water had to offer swimming, boating, fishing and exploring. Life is Great! | Beautiful photo. Is that JR? |
|

| Yes, That was taken a couple of years ago. He would have been 4 at the time. All my Grans love the water. I gave them swimming lessons as presents. Here he is with Jamie, Jamie was swimming underwater at 6 months, he was the best swimmer in his baby class. Now they do it different and they don't want them to start before 6 months. Life is Great! | My son Josh got his first boat when he was 8. His father had a place on the river before he was born and Josh has spent his whole life on that river. He has his own summer place on an island in the river with a lot of boats, Kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, a speed boat and a pontoon that he shares with his sister. He goes fishing, water skiing and knee-boarding. JR spends a lot of his summer days at Unc Josh's river place along with his parents. They take him out in the kayak silently gliding along the shore line looking for wildlife. He is learning to love and respect nature and has a good knowledge the river already. Life is Great! | He is getting a good knowledge of boating safety. Learning where the rocks are, grassy areas and the cuts between the islands. Knows the best swimming areas, where the sandy beaches are and the fun rockslides. Age 5 Life is Great! | My daughters also have a love for the water, they both swim well, and water ski. Julie is more of a kick back and relax type. Swim a little sun a little have a good time. Jen co owner of the pontoon boat is as savvy a River Rat as her brother. She like me is also a certified scuba diver. With her young family she hasn't been diving for years but she loved her first ocean dive. After seeing an 8ft Caribbean reef shark on that dive she was ready to go and look for more. LOL The Rocks a favorite kayak spot always plenty of wildlife to see in this area. Sometimes you will see deer crossing the river here as well as ducks, geese, herons, egrets and eagles, we have also seen river otters and mink in this area. Life is Great! | This is a small sailboat co owned by Bob my DH and his friend Walter. They were part of Sail for America on the Hudson River. They were both sailing instructors in the SEAS program and we went sailing on the "Ranger" a larger craft that usually sailed the Hudson also. |

| Wow great thread and wonderful pictures. Raised in a fishing family and married to and avid fisherman and having two boys that fish one would think I do well with water huh? deathly afraid of it...having almost drown at the age of five me and water have never meshed to well. We have a small fishing boat that I am fine in and will even go into the water as long as I can tough bottom but you will never get me on a cruise or water skiing and snorkeling OMG!! I envy water lovers but I'll take a hike over getting in water any day. I'll folow your threads and live through you guys!! It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile, leave him one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give... |

| I have only been on a sail boat once and that was a Cat. It was fun and I enjoyed it. I do have some small issues with seasickness so I have always been a little hesitant to try sailing but I sure would like to try another short trip and see how I do. I am looking forward to more of your sailing stories Stormy. Luvs, I have a friend that never learned to swim and was afraid to put her face in the water. But she really wanted to learn to swim. I worked with her in my pool and even got her into the ocean a couple of times. She is very small and her memories of the ocean were of getting knocked down by the waves and tumbled pretty good. I had Ric drop us at a nice protected beach and while the guys went fishing I took her in and she just loved it. She told me that her trust in me is what got her in the water she knew I wouldn't put her somewhere that she couldn't handle. Well, when she turned 60 her sister asked her want would she like for a present, something that she always wanted. After a little thought she decided that what she had always wanted was to learn to swim so her sister paid for swim lessons. I gave her a few for Christmas and she is now a swimmer and very proud of her accomplishment. Currituck Sound Duck, N.C. Life is Great!
