| Sally, I have never gotten the impression that money had anything to do with the Baby Joseph controversy. From what I understand, the fact was that the parents wanted to be able to care for the baby until he died in the comforts of their own home. This required a tracheotomy be performed so that fluids could be suctioned out of his lungs daily by the round the clock nurses that would care for him at home. Apparently performing such a surgery on a terminally ill patient in a vegetative state was contrary to accepted medical protocol at that hospital. The parents did take the hospital to court and lost. A religious hospital bolstered by clergy and pro-life and anti euthanasia groups in the US intervened and flew the child here to have the surgery performed. The child lived for 5 months off of the ventilator in his home. |
