I have one more I think.. I'm going to look.....uh oh.. somethings not right... I'm showing a pic is there but i have no clue what it's going to be.... I'll be right back..LOL
OH JERI.. that ain't no hibby..LOLOL... sorry about that!! ( thank goodness i don't take nekid pics, or i would have been in trouble for sure)..LOL.. Here's another one.. NOID from Lowes
Linda did you plant the last two in the ground? They look like the tropicals. I let several of my tropical die fom lack of water when we were going through the flood. Ironic huh no water for them. I just couldn't get around to it all.
Linda Kay.. I love the Pineapple one! Were the pots protected?
The one I started the other thread with is most definitely a tropical.. she is deader than a doornail. I won't trust Lowes employees anymore..LOL.. she told me they were hardy...
I love them all that's bad. Most hardy ones have dull leaves and the tropical ones have shiny leaves. That is not always the case but a good general rule.

I have about 6 tropical hibiscus started from seed in the back room. They seem to be fine with no special treatment or light. I keep the soil just moist and not dry or too wet and they look like they are semi dormant with just a little bit of slow growth. In one or two more years I`ll share pictures of the blooms LOL! Karen
Hibiscus are one of my favorite plants. I don't bother with the tropicals since I hate saying goodbye to them each winter, and I'm not storing anything for the winter. I did that for years. What a hassle! At one point I had over 200 tropicals in my house! Now I have 3 houseplants. Life is so much simpler.
I love the dinnerplate hibs and here are a few of mine:
Fireball, a new hybrid. This sucker got huge last year and had 50 blooms on it at once. And unlike many hibs, the blooms stay open ALL day. It's not very fertile though. It only produced a couple of seed pods. I've sown them to see what I might end up with.
An unidentified light pink hib. It has tri-lobed leaves, similar to a Tx Star and also has velvety seeds like a Tx Star. It gets 7 or 8 ft tall. But the blooms are rather small, only about 4 or 5 inches. I had threatened to cull it from my gardens this year because I'm not impressed, but I think I've found another place for it. Anybody have a clue as to its name?
Moy Grande - yep it's "very big". I'm going to have to move it because it's trying to eat my patio. I can't really tell if it's red or dark pink--a unique color.
And the only rose of sharon I have is this one, Blushing Bride, white with a faint pink tint. It looks more pink here, but it often looks very white with just a hint of pink.
The ROS is just a different species of hibiscus; it's hibiscus syriacus. Tx Star hib is hibiscus coccineus. Some of the dinnerplate hibs are hibiscus moscheutos. Tropical hibs are hib sinensis.
The ROS typically produce smaller blooms, around 4 inches. Some are double and some are single. I like the doubles best myself. I think the ROS are more old fashioned plants; seems everybody's gramma grew one. I remember mom had one planted right at the back door. That sucker would slap you in the face everytime you came out the door. And the bees loved it; back then I was absolutely terrified of bees and I hated that shrub. That may be why the Blushing Bride is the only one I'm growing, and it's a double. The one by the backdoor was a single. So maybe something subconscious is going on with my dislike of ROS...hmmmmm, another character flaw to work on. LOL
Yeah, me too! The tropical hibs are so beautiful! I want some. If I could glass in a section of my gardens, I'd grow all of them. LOL I have zone envy bad!!!
Beautiful hibiscus Nancy, I don't grow the tropical ones any more either. Cept I did break down and get the blueberry thrill cajun hibiscus not long ago. All the rest are hardy . I love that dark pink dinnerplate.
Mine aren't up out of the ground yet this year, seems they and the salvias are the last things to come up around here.
Yeah, the hibs are about the last to come up here too, Kathy, along with the amaranthus. But they sure are worth the wait, aren't they?
Have you guys had any luck with rooting hibs? If so, clue me in please. I have no trouble rooting the ROS. I have pots and pots of them rooted from last fall. I think every stick rooted. But NONE of the hibs did--not a single one and I must have taken 200 cuttings from soft and hard wood.
Karen, that ROS is pretty. My mom has one of those and I snuck over and stole cuttings while she was napping. They all rooted so now I have to find a place to plant them. LOL
Everyone here calls the unidentified hibiscus Granberry Rd. Hibiscus.
I've shared these seed for years on Garden Web, DG, in trades, sases, & seed boxes.

Oh my you wouldn't believe what I have going on now!! My little backyard nursery is growing fast than I can keep up with!! Doing a lot of mail orders and maybe I'll have a Mother's Day sale locally. So, so much to do...I could be at it 24/7 and still not get it all done! But I just love it!!
I've never even notice the seeds.......Guess I'll add it to my database as unknown and may be someone will come along with a name! Will keep looking!
It's pretty Donna, I do't know the name either, but it does look like the lord baltimore. I never get seeds off any of mine for some reason. Except the red texas star hibiscus, and I get a few babies every year from it. this is why I don't use preen cause I want those baby plants LOL
hey jeri.....somebody here on cubits is compiling a database of databases. you ought to set these hibiscus pictures up into a database so we can all find them and add to them as we can. i am still finding databases that i knew nothing of as i visit different cubits. if you are interested lmk and i will find the name of the person doing the compilation.
I've barely had a bloom this year!!! Since no pictures for the current year. Still hoping that they give me something before the season is over. That freeze was hard here this year.
peppermint schnapps has bloomed pretty good for me. as has lord baltimore. one bloom from tx. star.....but it's in a small pot. that's it. i also have a very large flare red hardy hib. that has not bloomed at all.
All the hardy hibs I posted above have been blooming for about a month. Sultry Kiss and Cranberry Crush just started blooming. I don't have my other new hibs planted yet and they're not blooming in their pots. If this heat wave will pass, I'll get them planted and maybe see a bloom or two from them before winter comes.
