This little one was born about 3 minutes before I took the picture. Momma is cleaning off the birth sack. The lamb has not tried to stand yet.

Ewes and lambs are moved from the receiving area to the front section of the barn with more pens. We need more receiving pens so that we don't have to use these smaller ones.

If possible we leave the ewe and lambs in the receiving pens until they go into the community pens. These are about 10 or 12x15 ft, and nicely accommodate 3 or 4 ewes with their lambs. Here the lambs learn to find mom in a larger space and avoid getting butted by a ewe that is not their mom.

Chilled lambs can be warmed in the barrel that has a heat lamp suspended over it. Now and then I have to evict a cat before I can put a lamb in it.

From the barn, they are moved down the road into a small pasture (where the old boarded up house is). It is the funniest little parade I've ever seen. The ewes don't want to leave their lambs, the lambs have no idea where they are going, some turn around and go back toward the barn. Sometimes we give up trying to urge a lamb along and just carry it, but have to be sure momma knows where it is or she will go back to the barn looking for it. Three or 4 people come in handy for this job.

Mary, I love the way you are telling the story of the lambs! Seeing the pictures is helpful to figure out what a great job you are doing ....so cute to see the lambs not knowing where they are going! Rolling on the floor laughing

The Bible has a lot to say about people being like sheep. For instance, in Psalm 23, "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures". Sheep will not lie down if they feel threatened. "He leadeth me beside the still waters". Sheep prefer to drink from still water, not a rushing stream where they could not hear a preditor coming. There is lots more, including Jesus being refered to as the good shepherd that takes care of his sheep. Who are those sheep? People.

We really are a lot like sheep. If one sheep goes through a gate, they all go, even if they were afraid to go before one got brave. Where are they going? They don't know, they're just following the crowd. Like many people. Everybody else is doing it.

Today's little parade was unplanned. Somebody had left a gate open, and about a dozen of the braver or more curious lambs were taking the opportunity to explore the outer limits. And then we drove by and they were busted! Naughty little lambs!
