Simon is a very large 18 pound cat who showed up at my back door a couple years ago. He had not been neutered and did not act like he had been around people much. He was smart enough to meow at the back door, but then ran off when I went out to talk to him. It took at least a month before he'd let me sit near him while he ate the food I put out for him. I did a lot of searching, hoping to find his owner, but think he was probably dumped in the park across from me along with a black and white cat that showed up about the same time. I kept moving his food dish closer and closer to the back door and finally he got brave enought to step into the house. After a few months of going a little further into the house each day, he finally got brave enough to come into the living room. By the time he had been here around 3 months, it was winter and he would sleep on the foot of my bed at night. He still spends most of his time outside when the weather is nice, but has become a very sweet boy and lets me hug him and trim his nails. He likes to walk me to work at night and I sometimes feel like I'm being escorted by a big mountain lion. He has the loudest howl of any cat I know and often comes running through the park to meet me in the mornings as I walk home from work, howling all the way to let me know he wants food.
To me, the worst part is they have to know there are coyotes everywhere out here. My tibetans keep them away from my property, maybe that is why the cats come here, to be safe. Just wish one time I could catch someone dumping a cat!
