I'm in an amazing Bible Study this fall that's called Mercy Triumphs by Beth Moore. She is such a gifted teacher and she challenged people to memorize the entire book of James. Sounds daunting, doesn't it?

That is 5 chapters and 106 verses. She did it and I'm taking her challenge! Would you like to join me?

This forum of James is divided into six threads; the welcome note and the 5 chapters of James.

I'll be creating 5 types of graphics with each verse or verses listed. All of chapter one will have a particular look as will each of the other four chapters that follow. This is for those of us who learn better visually. Big Grin

If you want to, you may print out the graphics and laminate them for easy memorizing.

I know everyone has a favorite version of the Bible but I simply had to make a choice for continuity sake and used the NIV (New International Version). You may choose to memorize in a different version but all of the graphics will also be NIV. I kept the structure of the verses in groups so they make sense to us as we memorize them.

I know this is a huge task but already, as I began, I found a sweet blessing: I woke up during the night and instead of tossing, I worked on my memory verse! Lovey dubby

Feel free to chat in the threads and share your journey. Even if you don't choose to memorize, I'm glad you're here reading the book of James with us.

Let's begin!

James wrote this Book around 50 A.D.

According to my study Bible, the key themes are:

* God gives us true wisdom

* Satan tempts to break us; God tests to strengthen us.

* The words we use are powerful and influential

* Faith and good deeds go hand in hand

Key Verse:

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." James 2:26

I wonder if that's where the term "practice what you preach" comes from Confused as James is adamant that service to others is invaluable.

Thank you so much for this Becky Lovey dubby Group hug

And thank you Vicki for the insight to James! We are all going to learn and grow together, whether we memorize or not. Lovey dubby

Some even compare James to a New Testament type of Proverbs since Proverbs is all about wisdom too.

Hurray! Marilyn. This may take me the rest of the year. Whistling

I have verses 1-3 committed so far and keep running them through my head so they stick and mean something. I will share the other graphics there in a little bit. Hurray!

I am here too Becky! This is a wonderful challenge, and I hope to at least follow along, if not memorize at least some of the verses!

Hurray! Linda.
I have verses 1-3 set in stone now so will move on to verse 4 today. I made a set for the car, the potty room and by my bed. Just on index cards.

I have verses 1-3 memorized but will wait until Wednesday before moving on to verse 4. Al and I are hosting our garden club tomorrow. It is our first meeting for 2013 and we will be using our church fellowship hall for the meeting. We have to provide the main dish and others will bring salads and dessert, etc. I am giving the program on Lasagna Gardening so you can understand why I am waiting until Wednesday to move on. That's great Marilyn. We don't need to rush this anyway. We can keep saying verses 1-3 in our minds!

I like that perseverance in verse 3 is repeated in verse 4. It helps me connect the two verses. And then James tells us what is the result of perseverance: mature and complete . . . not lacking in ANYTHING!!! Hurray!
