we came from here http://cubits.org/Theseedtraderscubit/thread/view/62767/ Chapter 12 The call of Abram1. Now the Lord said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred and from thy fathers house unto a land that I will show thee. 2. And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing. 3. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 4. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: And Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and lot, his brother's son and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran, and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. 6. And Abram passed through the land into the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. 7. And the lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who had appeared unto him. 8. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east, and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. 9. And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. |

| Samantha: I googled the words "chronological Bible" and several websites came up that sell these Bibles. They are available in several different versions, including the New King James Version, the English Standard Version and the New Living Translation. If you type in those words into your search engine you can find the websites, too. I am not recommending any particular version of these chronological Bibles because I have not seen them and know nothing about them. I just wanted you to know that they are available. Again, I would recommend that if you get one, you keep it on hand to use alongside of your regular Bible. Just a suggestion. Back to the Bible study. Did any of you notice that in chapter 11, verse 4 they said: "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." BUT GOD in verse 8 did this: "So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city." The Lord did to them exactly what they were trying to avoid! Every time we humans think we are in control, God will show us differently! Also, if I am reading it correctly, Nahor was married to his niece, Milcah. verse29 It didn't seem to be all that unusual in those days for family members to intermarry. Also, if I am not mistaken, Sarah and Abraham were half-brother and sister although it doesn't say that in these verses. We'll come to that later. |

| Sorry, I'm going to back up just a little to Chapter 11 31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.32And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. .............................. .....................![]() This is the entire map of Abraham's travels. ......................................................Terah and his family's journey from Ur to Haran, where Abrahams Father (Terah) died. | Thanks for those maps, Debbie! To me, it is easier to understand the journey if I can see a map showing which way they travelled. I looked at a map of the present-day Middle Eastern countries and this is how I interpret their journey: They started in the lower part of what is present-day Iraq and journeyed up and across what is present-day Syria and then came down through what would be present-day Lebanon and on into the territory belonging to present-day Israel. Is that the way the rest of you see it? Of course it would have been a much shorter journey to go across the Arabian Desert but that certainly wouldn't have been practical. I am sure they travelled the major routes of that day, which would explain why they took the "long way around", so to speak. Can you imagine what it would have been like to travel with that many people and taking "all their substance" with them? (verse 5) They evidently picked up quite a few "souls" along the way (the souls they had gotten in Haran--verse5) or either a lot of babies were born on the journey. That must have been a very long caravan! I wonder how long it took them to reach their destination? Notice that the Lord said to Abram, "Unto thy seed will I give this land" (verse 7) and that was before Abraham had produced any "seed", namely Isaac! What a promise! |

| LOL, was it the pictures that caused ya'll to stop posting? I have been extremely ill with this bug that is going around. I was hoping to come back to a lot of good discussion, but except for Marilyn (thank you ), no one has posted. What's happening? Hope none of you are sick. I'll check back tomorrow. |

| I am here just lurking due to work. STill interesting! |

| I am still here lurking around. I get confused a lot with all of this and learning a lot I never knew before. Even if I don't post I'm always reading. Life is fragile, handle with prayer. |

| I was wondering the same thing, Debbie! LOL (and, by the way, so sorry to hear you have been "under the weather". Feel better soon!) Maybe some passages just don't inspire as much discussion as others, for whatever reason. As I said above, the maps help me to have a visual in my mind of where they travelled. It also makes me stop and think how hard a journey like that must have been, especially travelling with all those people. Can you imagine the number of camels, etc., they must have required to carry tents, supplies, food for all those people? No wonder it took them a long time to go from one place to another! It's mind-boggling, almost, when you really stop to think about the logistics of that kind of move. More importantly, though, are the spiritual aspects of what the Lord told Abraham to do. He had to move away from his extended family and everything with which he was familiar and go to a land he had never seen. Now that requires real faith and trust in the Lord! Do you realize there are people in this day and age that do that very thing? How many people in recent times have moved their families to a distant land in order to fulfill the call of God on their lives and take the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who may never have heard it? When you think of all the missionaries there are world-wide who have done that very thing, it does make you stop and reflect on the personal sacrifice required to do that, not to mention the absolute trust in God! For those of us who aren't called to go abroad, we can still have a part in the "great commission" by the giving of our tithes and offerings to help send those who are called. We can also tell those who are brought into our sphere of influence about the Lord. There are missionary opportunities right where each of us live! Well, now, it sounds like I am "preaching"! Sorry if I got off topic for a minute! |
