One of our Members of Trash to Treasure has asked for a Challenge Forum. I think this is an excellent idea and I know you guys will have plenty to offer in the way of inspiration.

Sundownr ~ Bev writes... "I need some inspiration, or maybe just motivation, to use up some recyclables. Could you set some challenges, or prompt some "show and tells," things made out of specific materials?! You can start threads for various kinds of material like: metal, wood, glass, rubber, ceramic, concrete, etc., or even more specific like: old computer part, broken dish, lone shoe, pop can, etc."

Let's see who can be the most creative with recyclable materials. The sky is the limit here folks

THIS WEEK (and I'm extending it since this week is almost gone) from Thursday, March 4th - Saturday, March 13th, our challenge will be to create something really special with OLD COMPUTER PARTS. You can post as many entries as you want to help provide even more inspiration to recycle and help make our Earth more green.

You may post photos of your finished RECYCLED treasure(s) at any time between now and the DEADLINE March 13th, 2010 at 9:00 p.m.

Please post along with your photo(s) a description of how you came up with the idea and what you did to create your treasure. Remember that the whole idea behind this challenge is for inspiration!

On Sunday, we'll have a vote (by the Cubit Members) on which one we think is the most creative. (I'll come up with something for a prize. Trust me, I've got plenty of stuff we can use for prizes around here.) The winner will need to send me their mailing address (via c-mail) and I'll mail out the prize on Monday.

Are you ready for a Challenge???

I haven't decided what I'm going to do but I have a box full of old computer stuff. I'll give it some thought tomorrow and see what I can come up with. If we had a boat, I could tie it all together to make an anchor! HAHAHA

I believe I have enough computer parts to build the boat, lol! I've thought of making planter boxes from the covers, too!

Here's an idea, PC 2 Aquarium
I'm just not up to this much of a challenge, but it may inspire someone else, lol!

Aaaah lookie, really cute Computer Bugs!!
Now I might just do this one.

Funny, a Cat Bed (house) out of an old monitor, LOL!

Another cool idea, Computer Jewelry! Ooops, lots of harmful components and chemicals... maybe not such a good idea after all. We should probably be careful with all the pieces and parts we try to recycle from the computers!! I need to start tearing the old computers down and see what I have to work with.

Instructables had a Dead Computer Contest (and I just found out). They're voting on the best reuse of computer parts now. There are some really creative ideas, including a few I've already listed above.

Folks are making money from cool ideas using recycled computer parts at Green Goods.

Bev,

I really enjoyed watching the guy make his aquarium from his PC. Amazing that it still works!

The other links are great too. But that one was my favorite. Don't know that I'd go to that much trouble for a fish though! HAHAHA

I've gone to a lot of trouble for my goldfish, so I can relate to the fella. I'm not brave enough to fit water, electricity, and a live critter together in such tight quarters, though, LOL (I'm rather fond of my goldguys, too)! I do think his PC aquarium is really cute and ingenious.

Janet,
I'm adding more links with inspirational ideas for recycled computer parts, as I find them, by editing my earlier post, that way all the links will be all together and not scattered through out this thread.

Well I have been so busy working on my Ancestry Database and trying to get my Artisan's Nook Cubit spiffed up that I haven't had time to think too much about this challenge. But I have been thinking a little.

I'm not giving up on it, but just wanted to see what's happening. Has anyone else come up with anything recycled from Old Computer Parts yet?

Janet, I have been too busy too....building a cubit takes work! This is a great idea forum though!

I love letters... the alphabet type. :) Words and so forth. I do a lot with decoupage but when I was ready to get a new keyboard, I saved it and I am doing something (s l o w l y) with it. Will post photos when it's finished but it's on the to finish list right now.

It's funny you'd say that Becky. I was thinking late last night (some of my best thoughts are late at night) and thought about putting an old keyboard in the back seat of my truck for Jolie Faye to play with. She is almost 4 and loves to sound out the letters on words she sees. She plays some computer games on our laptop and loves it when she has to type out her name. Anything I can do to encourage her with letters is a good thing.

I'd thought about taking the keys off and putting them into a plastic bag. But I want her to learn the placement of them on the keyboard. I'm a looker when I type. Whistling But wish I knew the keyboard much better. I ought to since I spend so much time on it. But old habits are hard to break.

Both of my girls were early readers. No doubt it was because I spent so much time reading to them. Didn't have much in the way of computers back then. Never thought about letting them use mine until they were already in school.

Kids in school these days are working on computers as early as Kindergarten. Whatever I can do to advance them BEFORE they get there will only be a bonus to them by the time they arrive at school.
