Yesterday, Connie and I were out gallivanting at the Goodwill store. We'd separated for a bit and then when we got back together she said to me, Did you see those big chairs? I said, No. So she took me to where they were sitting. Two big dining room chairs for $49.99. These chairs looked like something that might have come from Ethan Allen. Someone had started taking them apart, evidently to recover, or something, and they were loosely put back together. Looked like all the parts were there, so I took the "tag". With furniture and other BIG items, they put a Paper TAG on the item (with it's description and price) so that if you want it, you pull the tag and continue shopping. When you are done, you take the tag to the register and pay.

I've been needing a new dining room set for quite some time. My house is where all of the family congregates for the holidays and I scramble all over my house, picking up office chairs, piano bench, etc. to find enough chairs for everyone.

So I get to the register to pay and pull out my "Get outta Goodwill Free" card aka Customer Value Card that still needs 2 stamps on it. Connie's got one too that needs 3 stamps. (For each $15 spent, you get one stamp. 10 Stamps and you get $15 in merchandise free, hence my name "Get Outta Goodwill Free".) I knew that with everything I was buying I'd get enough stamps to finish filling both of those cards. BUT, the deal is that you can't use the card on the same visit as you finish filling it. GRRRRRR Now that Goodwill has a NO RETURN policy, it's hard to find anything that is $15+ that isn't electronics. Fortunately, the tellers all know Connie and I well and know we spend quite a bit of money there, so they are a bit more lenient with us than with most other customers. The cashier stamped my card, asked me to sign it (so I could "cash it in".) and then stamped Connie's card too with the remaining stamps.

SO, in essence for $35.00 I got these 2 fine chairs.

We brought them to my house where Connie tightened up all of the screws. When my husband got home, he used his nail gun to re-attach the fabric. Someone had tried to do that before, but used nails that were too small to catch any "meat" on the wooden frame.

Here are the chairs.

OK, now you may wonder how in the world my family can fit around that table. That is my extra table. It has leaves that you pull out.

I parked those chairs there because I don't want the grand kids sitting in them, eating stuff and getting them dirty. Big Grin

Also, those pillows in front of the table are for my dogs to lay on when they sunbathe!

They are solid wood and very well constructed. I'm tickled to death. I wish there had been more of them, but I'm thankful I was there at the right time to get these 2.

You can see the detail of the wood here.

Thanks Bev! I like 'em a whole heckuva lot too. I have only had a chance to sit in them when they were in my driveway. I really don't want to put them at the table we eat at throughout the year because I just know the kids would spill red juice or something equally as stainable on them. Crying

They really are in excellent condition. NOW.... They were pretty ratty looking when I paid for them though. Connie tightened them up really good and then hubby nailed the fabric back like it belonged. You'd never know that the panels were flappin' in the wind in the back of my truck on the way home!

Can you spray them with something like a water repellent? Maybe then they would not stain so bad?

Good Idea Linda. And I happen to have some of that. I'll do that today.

The backs on them are quite tall and I think I will still leave them where they are, since they'd block the TV at the main table.

Just a hint about the spray protection for fabrics. They work great but remember that when you wipe up spills from the surface it weakens the protection so that the next spill can creep in and under the weak area. This will allow a new spill to creep under the edges of the weak area and trap it there where you will not be able to get it out.

To avoid this be sure to reapply the spray finish after cleaning...something I learned the hard way Grumbling

I hadn't thought about that. Thanks from mentioning it and preventing me from the same mistake. I love learning from others. :-)
