It's all about choices.
I will start posting photos of what we have done to some acres we dozed a road thru about 4 or 5 years ago. We did our best to save all of the Ohia trees ... and slowly it is getting full. Every morning we walk with Thelma (our labrador mix) and really enjoy where we are and what we are doing. Most of the palms were planted from 1 gal. containers ....we brought in a BobCat to hammer out holes in the lava which we filled with magic .... and everyone grew like topsy. If anyone has questions as to IDs of plants, I will try to help... Almost everything we planted were starts or cuttings from other friends.... We did buy most of the palms... Plant lovers are very generous here.....

So...this is the big Ficus benjamina in the front of the house....about 20 years old.... The buildings on the right are Bob's shop. This tree is one of my main supplies for mulch when it sheds it's leaves.... The understory is planted in Anthurium, Vriesa, ferns ...

As you turn to the left, there is the house and more plants. This photo is standing at the porch, looking out towards the above tree.... Hanging in the basket is a Cycus pseudoparasitica and the pots have vireyas (tropical rhododendrons and misc. stuff)

And...if you walk thru that picture and look left, you will see the house. Single wall construction, redwood siding....

This is part of the front drive into the property. Those huge Anthuriums I grew from seed given to me by a friend....the leaves are about 4-5' long....

This is the beginning of the walk we take along 'the road' every morning....we had no master plan at all...sort of what plant was in our hand and where we thought it would like to live. We have planted about 250 palms, 25 bamboo (mostly timber) and misc. and hodge podge of everything.... Somehow it all works....

I like Ti (Cordyline fructicosa) and i have some Australian Ti. I love contrasting the colors, shapes of leaves and growth patterns. Bob is an engineer and he tends to have a linear idea in mind...always. Planting are in rows or in patterns... He does know how to plant them tho' which makes up for it!!!! Ti are easy...just stick them in the ground ....

The long bed on the right, going up the hill is a hodgepodge of lilies, neomaricas, cycads, crotons....and it is filling in well. On the left is a fragrant Puakenikeni.....

The oldest plantings here are 4 years old. The palms came from 1 to 5 gal pots...other stuff just stuck in the ground.... We get about 150" of rain a year...average temperature is 79deg. F. and life is good.

Wonderful!
All the Sealing wax palms that people here had died in the cold this past winter. They are a zone 11 plant and can't take any cold at all. Such a shame, it's GORGEOUS.

Carol, a girl could certainly get use to those beautiful surroundings. Have you always lived in Hawaii?

OH, Hetty, how sad!!!! To lose any plant is tragic at best...but the palms are so noble!!!

Well, Susan, that depends on how one defines "lived'... Whistling I was born in Honolulu (father in Navy) and we moved here 9 years ago... I feel I have come home - that in my soul I have always lived here... after sailing through the South Pacific we felt like fish out of water in Seattle and when we came here to check it out, we fell in love. Yes, there are challenges but we really love it here!

The Tropics and Tropicals

Tropics and Tropicals is about living, growing, and simply loving the tropics and tropical plants. I urge anyone to let me know about a tropic they would like to discuss and we will make it happen.
