I just LOVE this plant!!! The different leaves are endless, varying in length, width, closeness on the stem, length of leaf display down the stem....endless. The display of the leaves on the trunk is called the KAHILI, i.e. long kahili, short etc. The leaf is refered to as the Juno....don't know why, but it is.

Mostly I like to plant them in groups with the taller and solid colors in the back, the more open kahilis in front. They make wonderful barriers, markers, indicators etc. in a garden. They can also be used in flower arrangements very effectively. The Polynesians made clothes out of the leaves, and used the leaves to serve food on and wrap food in for baking in the earth ovens. At that time, it was the wide leafed green ti leaf.

All Ti are cultivars/sports of the solid green Ti. Therefore, all of the incredible color displays are ones of a kind, reproducible only vegetatively...the seeds, when grown out, can give you more exciting color variances.

So here is New Guinea Black . It has a long kahili, and the leaves are darker in less light and have a bit of green in them in more light or in the sun. The leaves are about 18"-24" long.

BOLERO. This one is a slower grower with all of the white on it...and the undulating leaves and splashy colors brighten up anything!!

KILUEA...loves to grow in full sun. The splotches on the leaves are due to the sulpher dioxide in the rain...from the volcano..

MISS ANDREA grows equally well in the sun as in the shade... I prefer the shade as it really brightens it up. This little Ti doesn't grow very fast nor very tall....

OLA'A BEAUTY. When the light shines thru the red leaves of Ti, the colors vibrate. This Ti is a steady grower and can have quite a long kahili when fertilized regularly.... It isn't one of the bigger Ti...the leaves are only about 5"-8" long but very full.

WIL'I'IS GOLD. What looks red on the leaves is really bright pink...and the leaves take on golds and pinks and greens ... no pattern, just display.

I have really started to like these plants since I discovered other colors than the ubiquitous 'Red Sister'

Here is one of my favorites: Bronze Baby. It's a dwarf.
