I throw on the wheel and also make custom tiles out of high-fired stoneware and porcelain clay.
This photo is my most recent tile installation, which I finished today! It's a raised hearth for the cast-iron chiminea that sits in the little front courtyard of our Mediterranean-style home. All the tiles are handmade---the ones on top are glazed with blue, and the front tiles are a white glaze with cobalt design painted on them. On my front sidewalk, I've combined a lot of similar blue and white tiles that I've made with commercial Saltillo tiles from Mexico.

What an awesome place to kick up your feet at the end of the day! I like the beach balls too. Wondering how in the world you figured that one out though!
Yeah, it's my favorite place to sit in the evening. Out of frame in the right corner is a hummingbird feeder that gets a lot of action just before dinnertime, which makes it even more enjoyable.

Your little garden patio looks so inviting. Must be an enchanting place to go and relax. Your tile work is beautiful. Do you use an earthen kiln or the standard electric type?
Thanks---we call it "The Happy Place"!
I use both electric and gas kilns---I fire hot enough so I don't have to worry about frost damage to my tiles (about 2300 F).
I'm enjoying perusing your husband's work when I get some time---what a talented guy. And the website is really nice. I've done some of that and know how difficult it is, so clearly you're very talented as well!
