| Welcome to my introduction to the joy of getting a cookbook published. First and foremost if this has been a dream of yours, then follow it to the end. It had always been a dream of mine to write a cookbook based on the many recipes from my mom and other family and friends but the task seem so involved that I never did anything about it. My daughter-in-law, who knew about my dreams, sent me a newspaper article about getting a book published. For weeks I had it sitting on my desk next to my computer and one day I just decided that if Paula Dean, Rachael Ray and all the rest could write a cookbook than so could I. I never realized what it took to write a cookbook or how time consuming and yes, costly if the book was going to be the best it could be. As an unknown author I knew that most likely the traditional publishers won’t even read my first draft. The way to go is what is called self publishing. This involves a company that will publish your book after you have written it. As in any thing, there are pros and cons and after doing a lot of research I found different kinds of self publishers. There are the less costly ones that will simply print whatever you send them. You will have input on the type of book you want (hard or soft cover or both) and of course what the front and back cover looks like. But you will be responsible for everything else including spelling and grammar. I choose iUniverse Publishing Company because they were voted number 1 in self publishing with exceptional options offered such as professional editing, spelling and grammar checks. The editing was especially helpful because it was edited by people who only edit cookbooks. They even suggested changes to some of the wording I had in the cookbook. But no matter who you choose in self publishing you must realize that once you approve the material you have full responsibility of the results. I have to say it was very frustrating at times because of so much wasted waiting time but also the wildest ride ever. I was blessed to get George Nedeff as my Editorial Consultant who always put things in prespective for me and solved my many problems. My book is filled with old family recipes and stories about how these recipes came about when I was a young girl and how my mother always seemed to cook from the heart which is why my cookbook is titled “Cooking from the Heart” But the most important thing about the plan I chose is that they did all the marketing including selling it on their own website as well as the websites of Barnes and Nobel, Borders, and Amazon.com which is really the only way to do it. Besides the marketing from the publishers there are many ways you can get the book out there. I went to my Library and by donating a book they will shelve it for you, go to your local radio station and see what they can do for you and many stores will show your book off. I invite you all to come take a look at my website, which was created to work hand and hand with the book. http://www.cookfromtheheart.com .. if I can be of any help to you please drop me a note.
