Welcome to American Idol 2010. I'm SherryLike from DG, where I started the Idol thread some years ago. It's been a fun, seasonal thread. We'd love to have you join us.

Tell us about persons in your area that made it to Hollywood and, or, those you like or don't like that made it. In my particular area, there are three from Little Rock: Charity Vance, 16, who is VERY good, and a friend of my grands; a guy with Tourettes, who sings without a hitch & I really liked him, and I'm not sure who the other guy is.

I'm looking forward to the show tonight - wonder if Ellen & Simon will behave, hmm, I bet they will. I didn't expect much this year; however, after watching the auditions, I'd say it's one of the most talented groups I've seen. Later...Sherry aka SherryLike aka ChicotSherry

Hi Sherry--Agree that Paula Abdul guy was super. Very smart , he took notes fron last season when the real WOWs were singers who could change the whole tone of a song. I was also sure that the girl from Vonore TN (Dollar Store Dress) would not survive long. There's talent, and then the whole next level with training and lessons and practice. I sure hope she got something good from this and some $; she touched me.
I think that I shall never see...A poem lovely as a tree

Oh, dear. It will take me a while to get used to this format, whew, I just deleted a post I'd worked on for more time than I should have spent. So, let me say a big hello to sallyg & Chrissy, with a cap C, LOVE seeing you both here, thx!! Idol begins at 7pm, central time tonight. Deb, I have friends that watch it at work online - now, I don't know how they do that, maybe at YouTube. Tonight should be a more fun night anyway.

About Ellen: I'm crazy about her, she's really funny. I suspect that the hype about her/Simon, being at odds, is strictly that, rating hype. This I noticed, she and Simon are very similar, she doesn't seem to have any time for a performer that isn't 'right on', one vocal miss, and she's done - or so it seems.

I plan to begin another forum, or possibly another Cubit, which I will tell you about when I catch another break. You guys are sweeties for joining me.

Wondering if the quote I added will show up. Later..

I'm a big Idol fan and glad you started this cubit. Real early to pick favorites yet, but I also really liked Andrew Garcia the Paula Abdul guy, Crystal Bowersox the single mom, Casey James the blues guy and thought Haley V was good too. Can't wait to see who gets through tonight.

Yes, Crystal was the last girl. I don't think I saw bank robber boy last night or the man with Tourettes. Not sure he's good enough to make it all the way, but I sure admire him for trying. I cheated and wrote down some names as I watched.

Ha!!! That's not cheating, that's SMART!! Tourette Boy IS gutsy, and he's from Arky too!!! There are 3 from Arky this year. Are they going to have more finals tonight and, or, does the show start 2nite. I bet finals, or it would be 2 hours & advertised more heavily. And, maybe they don't want to hit it too hard, until fans have recovered from the Super Bowl...you can bet Idol has the numbers and knows exactly the right time to start up...

There was a basketball game tonight, so, I missed lotz of the show - did Paula (song) Boy make it, I surely hope so!! So happy that Charity Vance, Little Rock, made it, the others in her group were good too. I couldn't tell if Tourettes Boy made it or not, and I wish Bank Robber Boy's group had been better, but that group drug each other down. Groups is t-o-u-g-h but an important part of the competition - oh, what about Waitress Girl?? I totally missed her. I really liked both of the groups that sang the same song, but especially the 2nd group, I could watch/listen to them all day, loved their clothes too...tonight, the bad ones were really bad & the good ones were really good...

Well, I watched group night (day?) and I must say I'm disappointed. It was so uneventful. What a polite bunch of contestants. There was almost none of the usual backstabbing and no one went into hysterics.

No favorites for me yet, except for the guy whose mother and father both once belonged to gangs -- Andrew Garcia, I think. He's no Adam, but he's very, very good.

It was hard to tell much from the groups. I was sorry too that Matt, the boy robbIer, didn't make it. and also the Italian guy. Andrew Garcia is still the one that really jumps out at me. Was glad the blues guy Casey Jones made it. Also made notes that I liked Jannell Wheeler, Jermaine P., Katie, Haley and someone I can't remember right now named J.B. I think Crystal, the single mom did make it. Just caught a glimpse of her. I'm not sure about the waitress Didi?. Mary came across as real bossy, but was probably the best in her group. Glad Big Mike made it. He seems like a nice guy. Not sure if he will go real far. I hate hearing some of the kids say they blew their last chance in life. I know it must be terrible to go from being so high to feeling like the bottom just dropped out from them, but they have a lot of life ahead and if they really have talent, they still go a long ways. OK, that's enough rambling from me.

I watched last night for the first time - and thought I wasted my time! What a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. Why have these people up all night rehearsing for what - a minute or two of song with a few seconds each to impress??? Sorry, I think it's terribly unfair and I don't think for a minute that the judges can make good decisions concerning individuals based on a 'group' performance. Did some groups perform better than others? Absolutely. But there were no doubt individuals stuck in a bad group performance who got no chance at all. And unless someone shows up in the top 20 that I didn't hear last night, Idol will be a repeat of past mediocre seasons. I don't think I'll watch again till they get to the top 20 point. Too frustrating. I wasn't sold on Ellen as a judge. What did you all think? You've watched more than me.

I think the judges' decisions are based on much more than the minute or two of song. They probably get feedback from the show's directors, cameramen, vocal coaches, and other personnel on the way each individual behaves in a group. The judges ultimately have to choose people who can live together in a house, do commercials and public relations events together, and possibly go on tour together. They have to weed out the prima donnas who can't be congenial.

Sometimes talent overrides this factor. Carrie Underwood is rumored to have been unfriendly to the other contestants, but it was clear to most people she would be the season winner from her very first audition, so her lack of congeniality was excused.

There's also the stress factor. Professional singers often have to perform after staying up all night in some sort of stressful atmosphere, so the judges have to weed out anyone who forgets the lyrics or sings off key simply as a result of stress and a lack of sleep.

Hi! Can I join you all? It's so good to have a place to discuss this. DH and I love Idol, but really fear for its future, especially after Simon leaves. I thought Ellen did a good job, although maybe a little too unforgiving - like maybe she was trying to show that she could do this even though she has no musical background. I miss Paula!

I didn't like the groups thing, again, and I think that some good people got eliminated. In particular the youth leader from some church - can't remember his name. We thought he had a good voice, and was very likeable.

And why would anyone choose that Lady GaGa song? The words and tempo made for a disaster waiting to happen.

At least we don't have to put up with someone like the girl from Puerto Rico last year that was such a whiner! That's a BIG plus!

Zu & tomato & stilldew - I enjoyed your posts - things have been brisk here with some serious weather & the grands were out of school & will be tomorrow too. I hope to catch up this week!!

ceejaytown, I'm sure I speak for the entire group, ((WELCOME))!!!!! The more the merrier, lol! We have been together some years now & we love chatting about every single detail of Idol. I'm not sure any two of us share the same opinion but we enjoy meeting like this, ha!!

Seems like this year might be a turning point for Idol, in a number of ways. Groups is a big part of the show - Idol has to know how/if the contestants can/will work together, sometimes at the expense of contestants that otherwise seemed promising. Some groups were awkward, without direction or leadership. I understand that since David Archuleta, that parents/family are interviewed & several contestants have been weeded out due to stage parents. I see both sides - what does Idol expect with 16 year contestants?

I LOVED the two dueling groups that sang the same song, if the first group had been in my house, I'd have sent them to their room, ha! The 2nd group was my favorite, very entertaining!! I could watch/listen to them all day - great clothes/makeup/hair/voices/movement, the works, plus fun!!

I'm off, we has slushy snow, after a lovely day, and sun 'promised' 2moro...

I see you made your Idol 2010 cubit.

Sometimes fox will coem in for me and sometimes it won't. Have been able to watch some of the auditions and got to see group night.

Some of them are good and you can hear the talent , and others, I wonder how they even made it to Hollywood.

I usually don't watch too much in the begining. Like Tomatofreak , I usually wait until they get to the top 20. And usually don't start voting til it gets to the top ten.

Hi everyone. I'm not generally even a tv watcher, but I love American idol. I set up our DVR to record it everytime it comes on so I can watch it at my leisure. Of course, this means I'm not participating in the voting though. The first year I watched it (season 5) I did vote. That was before we had a dvr though, so I had no choice but to watch it when it was on if I wanted to watch it. And I did want to watch it! Once we got into more daylight hours, it was very hard though to sit in front of the tv instead of being out in my garden. Oh, the trade offs of following a tv program! LOL

Anyway, Here's my dilemma. I'm way behind. I've only watched the first two weeks, I need to catch up. And I so want to participate in this discussion with you all. So I'm motivated to get caught up now. Besides, I'm probably missing some really good stuff, and I'm so excited to see Ellen as a judge this year! Will try my best to do that this week so I can join you here. This looks like fun!!!

Joy, you're not alone; I've hardly watched any. I saw just a part of tonight's show but it's the stuff I enjoy least - judges cutting people, dragging out decisions excruciatingly slowly, making contestants sweat and cry. Once the singing begins in earnest, that's when I'll start Tivo-ing the shows so I can fast forward through the commercials - and a lot of the judges' comments!

Side point here: Has anyone noticed that Ellen appears much older on Idol than she does on her own show? Hmmmm, could it be the magic of cameras and production?

Oh good! Glad I'm not the only one. I do usually enjoy the whole process of the show though. But I kind of felt that if it wasn't for the Latino girl last year with all of her drama and weirdness, the first half of last years show would have been boring. It looks to me, with just the ones I have watched, that this year has much more real talent. Gotta get caught up.

I guess I'm the odd man out in this discussion because I prefer the auditions, and especially group night, to the performances by the top 24. I enjoy the drama and I enjoy seeing performers who are really good but who didn't make it into the top 24 for some reason. The girl with the paralyzed facial nerve who was cut tonight is a good example. I love her voice, I admire her courage, and I'm glad I got to see her perform.

The first guy to get through tonight, Michael Lynche (Big Mike), has already been fired because he violated his confidentiality agreement. He told his father he was in the top 24 and his father told other people, so one of the guys that got cut will take his place on the show.

I must say that this year they do have some good voices, and if they stay good and are versitile then it may just be a personal preference for voting.

I must say I was glad to see that one over-powering girl gone. If she couldn't work with her group and the directors teachign her, what would it be like when they perform at the beginign of the show as oen group.

yes, I was sorry to see the girl you were talking about Zuzu be cut too. I enjoye d her voice and think she has a whole lot of talent in there.

Now how did you fidn out Big Mike had been dropped already. ??

Zu, I'm surprised what happened with Big Mike doesn't happen more often. I knew three contestants had been cut some weeks ago (I was told NOT to tell, and I didn't!!), b-u-t, one look at the groups last night & I knew which group was leaving. I too enjoy this part of the auditions, but not so much the over the top contestants, with tacky attitudes, often why they are cut almost before they start.

Tonight the show begins @ 8pm, central time.

Will they make the final cuts, then show a group number? Oh, about Tara's get up - what in the world was that??? She is just beautiful, but, I'm thinking, Idol would benefit by providing her a wardrobe mistress or mister. She really does like Casey, huh - I think he's pretty cute too - what's the guy's name he reminds me of - maybe from the Taylor Hicks year?? All in all, except for one guy, the talent appears better than the two David year & the Jordan Sparks year. Just sayin'...

I was sorry to see Shelby, the girl with the paralyzed nerve go too. Did you hear Simon's remark as she was leaving? Something like "That was a mistake." Maybe she'll try again next year. I was glad to see Casey, Todrick, Siobhan?,Didi and Aaron all get through. Not sure about Big Mike. Hope he didn't blow it for himself. Aaron the 16 year old seems really promising if he can keep his nerves under control. Was Andrew Garcia in one of the two groups that got through or was he cut? I always tape the show since I sleep in the evening before working nights, but If I really like someone, like Adam last year, I will get up to vote the last couple weeks. I tend to like it best after the top 24 are picked, but sometimes the drama of the auditions and group night are fun too. This year I thought there were a number of really ill people at the auditions. I wanted to warn the judges to be careful of whose buttons they were pushing, cause some of those people acted like they could be downright dangerous. It didn't seem to worry the judges too much. Guess that's why they have body guards. Can you tell I work as a psych nurse? I learned a long time ago that it's best to stay out of arms reach of some people and some of the characters this year were a little scarey, even to me. I think there's a lot of talent this year and tonight should be good.

Yeah, we too thought Shelby Dressel, the girl with the paralyzed nerve, had a great voice, and heard Simon's comment. That was sad. She is such an "up" person.

I liked Big Mike, and hope he gets his chance. Didn't we see others who phoned home with the news? Didi Binami has a great voice, but she gets so emotional. Hope she can get stronger; she'll need that strength. And Casey James is so cute, but the Cara connection has got to go away, don'tcha think? I would hate if people thought that was the only reason he was still in.

I am liking Ellen's overall view of the contestants. Not just for their voice, although that is of course #1, but also of their charisma, or star power. Of course, that can be developed, but only to some extent. With such good talent this year, that can be quite the deciding factor.

So very glad I have somewhere to go and talk about this.... Thanks!

It was nice to know that the vote on Shelby was split and that Simon apparently wanted to keep her. Kara (I almost called her Tara too and then saw my mistake in the preview mode), with her emphasis on the "whole package," probably kiboshed the deal because of the facial expressions.

I guess the contestants can tell their families and trusted friends, but the problem in Big Mike's case was that his father then told a reporter, and there's no possibility of discretion once the media get hold of information. At any rate, I'm happy if he's still in.

Last night's previews made it look as though Andrew Garcia was going to be cut, which really would be shocking.

I think Ellen's doing a fine job so far, but I personally like Ellen so much that she could just sit there and say nothing and I'd still be happy she was there.

I really thought he deserved to be one of the top 24, but probably only because I don't remember that much about some of them.

I'm so glad Crystal Bowersox made it. Folk rock is my favorite genre. She doesn't really fit into the AI mold, but neither did Adam Lambert and I'm certainly glad they let us see him compete last season.

I'm a little annoyed by contestants like Jessica Furney, who was cut last night and argued with the judges for such a long time about their decision. She seemed to believe that really, really wanting to be in the top 24 was a decisive criterion. Did she really think no one else wanted that? I tried not to feel too much malicious pleasure when Simon told her pointblank that the others sang better than she did.

I am excited to start this season, lots of great talent. I agree Zuzu, I am glad they kept Crystal, she was just too talented to let go. There were several that seemed distinctive and therefore memorable, she was one of them.

You're right, Sue: more memorable contestants than in seasons past. Another thing I like about this season is that we've seen lots of coverage of all, or almost all, of the top 24 contestants. I didn't see any unfamiliar faces in the montage at the end of tonight's show.

As for Ellen, aside from being a good judge, being kind to the contestants while maintaining the integrity of the show (unlike that silly Kara, who's been stalking Casey James like a cougar), there's another great thing about having Ellen on AI: Her own show is a perfect platform to showcase the talents of contestants that didn't make it into the top 24. She invited Shelby Dressel (good singer with paralyzed facial nerve) to be on her show this coming week, so we'll probably hear whether our suspicions about the split vote were accurate.

Cool... Ya don't happen to knwo what day Shelby gonan be on Ellen do ya? Would love to hear her sing again. She has somethign and hopefulyl somebody will try adn pic her up on the side. At least she can put on her resume that she it to that top what 40 some out of thousands.

I like Ellen too, for all reasons above, plus she has the ability to turn a bad moment to a humerous one. At first I wondere d how it would work betweenn Simon and Ellen, but I think it might actually work out. Time will tell when they really get down to opinions on individual performances of the contestants.

Ugggggggg Kara drives me insane. Too much drama chatter from her. She takes up so much time that you don't get to hear the opinions of the other judges. Some times thos e other opinions will help you see something good or bad in the contestant

Actually, I prefer the last guy that got picked over the crying.. bathroom guy.

I just hope the contestant s have the smarts to realiz e how much song choice is gonna make or break them.

I liked the thin, Afro Am girl, well dressed, long hair, sweet - nice voice & selections - I really thought she'd make it. The guy in the stocking cap surprised me, I didn't think he would, maybe I missed some of his performances. All in all, It looks like a strong, talented group. Off the top, Mama Soxs does it for me. I like Garcia(?), who sang Paula's song. Looks like lotz of choices this season.

Kara is the new Paula (I love Paula), without the glitz & bling, so far. I like Kara, she's so pretty, surely she'll tone down & spend more time on her wardrobe. Was she wearing a kid outfit or an old lady get up - two full shows of it was way over the limit...

I had a hard time waiting until I got home from work to check all your comments. Looks like a great top 24 to me. Most all the ones that made it were people I liked from the start. A couple we haven't seen much of will take awhile to decide on. For now Crystal and Andrew G. are my top favorites too. I think Aaron will appeal to the teenie boopers and should make it for awhile because of that. I hope Thaddeus doesn't let this discourage him too much. At 16, he can keep coming back 2 or 3 years more if he needs to. I would not be surprised to see him in the top 24 some year. Hopefully he will use the time between now and next year to get some professional training. I'm wondering how long the show will last without Simon. It will be interesting to see what he goes on to. I think I read that his new show will be called something like the X Factor. I'm guessing it will be more like America's Got Talent, with talent of all types and not just singing. Anyone heard more about it? By the way, are you guys also fans of America's Got Talent? The opera singer was fantastic last year. OK, guess we'll have to wait until next week. Time for me to think about bed.

Crystal and Andrew Garcia are my favorites for now too, Susan and Sherry. We seem to be unanimous. The others will have to blow me away to change my mind.

Ella, I'll let you know about the Ellen schedule if I come across it. Even if we miss it, though, I'm sure it will be on youtube or somewhere else afterwards.

Thinking back on Thaddeus, the guy the cameras followed into the bathroom, I'm wondering whether the judges thought he was just too young to deal well with the publicity. Part of his outburst after he got cut sounded so childish. He almost wrecked his chances of coming back next season, in my opinion.

Susan, I watch all of the dancing and singing competition shows on TV, but I find it really frustrating because the best person (the one I thought was the best, at any rate) didn't win on any of those shows in the past year. The best ones always come in second. Same with 'The Biggest Loser.' The one I'm rooting for all season always comes in second or third.

Hey, Sherry, that might be a good way to keep your cubit active between AI seasons. You could rename it something like 'Reality TV Competition Shows' and start new forums for 'So You Think You Can Dance,' 'Dancing with the Stars,' etc.

I been watchign Idol since the very first season. Old as I am I enjoy it.

The thign I hope this year is they try and change soem of the style s up. Meanign seems liek the contestants always have to sing songs from the same named star singers songs, that are guest judges.

Angele.. They have some really, really good talent this year. You should definately tune in. : )

I missed the first season because of a general snobbishness I felt against reality TV. When the genre started getting popular, it seemed to be a bunch of shows where people had to eat cockroaches, sit around in hot tubs together making small talk, or make their way through the jungle in skimpy outfits, and it just didn't appeal to me. I was on board for the second season of AI, however, and I've never missed a season yet, although my favorite reality show is 'So You Think You Can Dance.'

I've never watched 'The Amazing Race' or 'Survivor,' Sue. I did watch part of one 'Amazing Race' episode once, but found it frustrating because a couple that was doing everything right was led astray by a cabdriver who didn't know where he was going, and it was too infuriating to continue watching. On the other hand, I know it always wins all the awards for the best reality TV show, so I probably just watched it on a bad night.

Shelby Dressel's appearance on the Ellen Show will be taped on Monday, the 22nd, but I don't know when that tape will be aired -- sometime next week, for sure, but I don't know the exact date yet. Randy Jackson will be on the show on Monday, the 22nd, so that should be worth watching.

Ellen had Angela on today with a big surprise. After Angela sang - very good btw - Ellen announced that Tara was writing a song for her and that she'd be recording in a studio. She finished by telling Angela that they (I assume Tara and Ellen) were going to get her a recording contract. By that time, Angela was squeezing Ellen so tightly I'm amazed that Ellen could talk. It was quite a moment for this young woman who's had so much tragedy in her life. She was very poised throughout the interview.

Hi, Donna. Great to see you. Come join my rose cubit and post some photos of your wonderful garden.

I agree there's no Adam this season, or not that I've seen, but we managed to get through all the other seasons without an Adam. Speaking of Adam, although I'm still a huge fan, I think he's made some questionable choices since he left AI. His performance on that awards show didn't bother me, but I think it cost him a lot of fans that weren't quite as devoted as we were. His album doesn't really speak to me either. It's not my favorite kind of music, and I think it cost him a lot of sales. If they had put out an album of his performances on AI, I would have bought it the first day and listened to it constantly. I hope he does some rock ballads on his next album.

That's great news about Angela, Tomatofreak. I had a feeling something like that was in the works. It really makes up for silly Kara sitting herself down in Angela's chair and forcing Angela to sit on the arm of the chair. This will be even better for her than getting into the top 24. It'll save her all those weeks of stress and possible humiliation.

Glad Angela is getting some help with her career. Hope they do the same for Shelby if she comes on Ellen's show. I'd love for someone to give the little dollar store girl some help too, but I guess they can't help them all.

I'm not into either Amazing Race or Survivor, but only because I just don't have the time to watch everything. So You Think You Can Dance is my very favorite because of the fantastic choreography. I had to miss Dancing with the Stars last year because of a conflict with a couple other shows I like, but always enjoy it too. I like the variety on America's Got Talent and think some of the singers on the show are as good as the AI ones.

My coworker agrees with a lot of us that Andrew and Crystal are tops so far, but I think some of that is that we've seen more of them than some of the others. Will be interesting to see them all perform this week.

I did too, Sally and Susan. I really wanted her to have a better life. It's tragic that jumping off the bridge into a creek is the high point of her present life. I liked her voice a lot. She picked a lousy song for her Hollywood week solo, though, so I can understand why she was cut, but it's really too bad.

One could pretty much see it coming- little in the way of skilled prep available to her. I suppose there is some coaching for all of them, or is there, from the pros at that phase? Or does that come in later? Can we plead to Ellen on her behalf?
And how many more dollar store girls have that life too, without any musical talent to pin dreams on?

I was disappointed when they chose Haely Vaughn over Tory Kelly. I thought Tory was much better, and she had some maturity on her too. Haely is young (and very sweet with her big grin), but I don't see her staying on very long.

I felt for dollar store girl, but she needed someone to make her over before she went on the show. She didn't have any experience, just a dream, and she lacked that "star quality" that Ellen talks about. Too bad. I hope someone can do that for her and give her a chance...

Fun post, Zu! I was delighted to locate the Top24 photos, right there on the Idol site, lol. I wanted to add the entire bunch to this forum but the photo must have been too large.

While on my trip over the weekend, my grand girl and I were chatting, and, I asked her who she thought would win Idol, if we voted that day - without hesitation she said, Crystal & Andrew. I thought, wow, I'm not so out of touch after all.

So, we decided to ask the other grands and people we visited with over the weekend, 'who do you think will win Idol this year'. Between the two of us, we talked to about 20+ people that had an opinion, AND - every single person picked Crystal & Andrew - can you believe that? Many also mentioned that Crystal's teeth are a mess.

We asked, who will be third & no two people picked the same person. All this time, I assumed this Idol forum was way ahead of the average TV viewer. Looks like Idol and similar shows are educating the public with regard to talent.

I'm going to try to catch Randy on Ellen today too, thx...

I know what you mean about the teeth. What is wrong with people? I keep hearing: "My favorites are Andrew and Crystal, the girl with the brown teeth." Shut up! The worst are the ones that automatically blame her: She must do drugs. She must smoke a lot. She must never brush her teeth. As if people are going to take the trouble to audition without brushing their teeth. There are so many possible causes of tooth discoloration. It could be genetic. It could have been a case of severe malnutrition in her childhood. It could have been any one of several childhood medications with that side-effect, in which case it would be irreversible. I hope the press and other people are more polite about it as the season progresses.

Interesting show. Haley was cute, but her voice was painful to me at times. Crystal didn't do as well as I had thought she would, but is still up there among my top favorites. Siobhan stood out for me tonight as did Lilly Scott and Katelyn. They could take over the top spot for me if they keep it up. Also liked Didi, Katie and Janell. Was surprised to hear Simon say Paige has the best voice. Guess I need to pay more attention to her. So far she hasn't really jumped out at me. I have a feeling it's going to be an exciting year with lots of changing of favorites as things go one. Looking forward to the guys and seeing what all you thought.

I thought so too, Susan, but, even with the photos, I cannot keep them straight. I like: Crystal, Lilly, Siobhan, loved her song, reminds me of Adam's Ring of Fire, arty, haunting, in vogue, pop, with star quality, assuming she keeps it up. I think Simon knows she's worthy via his 'dark horse' comment. So, boys tonight, then voting on Thursday? I had Siobhan as a contender from the beginning. She has a great voice and such control!! It's very hard to transition to those higher notes and keep the quality without getting louder. Awesome.
I also like Lacey Brown - the red-head - and I'm eager to see what she has in store for us. Sure hope she makes it.
Lilly Scott has such a unique voice and I like what she does with it. She's the one with the white (or platinum) straight hair.
Michelle Delamor is just so beautiful, and I would like to hear more from her too. She has the "presence" - and a darn good voice to boot, too.
And then there's little Katy Stevens. 17 years old and singing a torch song. Well, she showed she had the "chops" for it anyway. I hope she gets to show us more.

These are the ones who stood out for me - and my DH. So we voted for all of them - many times. confused

Katy has a great big Broadway voice - except for Siobhan/Lilly/Crystal, I'm getting all their names, faces, voices mixed up - I look forward to a smaller group. How many will go home tomorrow night??

Idol tonight - the boys: 7pm - 9pm

Tomorrow night, 02/25: 7pm - 8pm

I agree with Simon that Paige has the best voice, but I'm afraid she'll be going home tomorrow night with Haeley. Poor Haeley just isn't that good, and we never did see much of Paige. Plus, they had her go on first, which is the killer spot, and the sound was off during her segment of the recap clips. Besides, those clips are taken from the dress rehearsal, so they often fail to measure up to the actual performance.

Lilly and Katelyn were both good. Both sounded the way I expected Megan Joy to sound last season, but she never quite got there until she was on tour. I agree with Kara that Katelyn's "makeover" was a flop. It's rare that someone looks worse wearing makeup than without it, but Katelyn would have looked great if she hadn't bothered.

CJ and Susan were right when they zeroed in on Siobhan from the start. She's terrific, and it helped that she sang Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game.' I've always loved that song. It is haunting and memorable and I remember when you couldn't go anywhere in the early 1990s without hearing the song or seeing the video.

Crystal was very good. I agree that she'd probably do best singing in a bar now that there aren't that many coffee houses left for folk singers. I love her voice, and she's still my personal favorite, but she's not a star and she might never be one. I felt sorry for her when she was standing there at the end, trying to smile without showing her teeth. She probably read some of the junk people are saying online about them.

I disagreed completely with the judges' critiques of Katie. I thought she handled that song beautifully and I really thought I was watching this season's winner while she was singing. She reminds me of how Kelly Clarkson sounded in the beginning of season one.

I thought Michelle was so polished that it was almost boring, and the other four were interchangeable. They'll have to do something vastly different next week to stand out.

I missed the girls.
I liked the first guy Todrick, thought it was unique. Love Casey's looks but am sick of the whole Kara loves Casey act.. The sixteeen yr old kids voice was super. Sorry that ? Cho picked an old song--has he not watched any other show they always trash the ones who pick old slow songs? Andrew was so so, they are right that his Straight Up was awesome and will carry him a bit, I can still see him singing that. Nobody else made an impact on me, I was flipping over to The Middle through part of it. (the Middle is hysterical if you have teenagers)

I missed girl's night, too, but if this is the best the boys have to offer, I won't be sticking around long. The Mick Jagger look-alike seems to have some power to his voice, but he only stood out because no one else did. Or at least not much. After all the hype over Michael, I thought his voice sounded like someone on helium. And the songs, omg; they were horrible choices! All in all, I thought this group of guys were mostly imitators - and bad ones at that. Sorry to be so negative, but this bunch doesn't hold a candle to last years group.

Well, I loved Lee DeWyze and I can't figure out how he escaped my notice up until now. What a great voice!

I also liked Aaron Kelly, Alex Lambert, Casey James, and Joe Munoz tonight.

I have a feeling Tim Urban and Todrick Hall will be going home tomorrow. Poor Tim really doesn't belong in the top 24 and Todrick has too much bad press. A lot of people think he's a scam artist. I'm not saying he is; I'm just saying a lot of people think he is. If people overlook the bad press, Jermaine Sellers might get voted out instead.

Sally, who's Cho?

I agree that both nights were fairly boring. That's usually the case at the beginning of each season. Adam Lambert was the only bright shining light on the first show last season. I remember Sherry said it was like watching "The Adam Lambert Show." He appeared last, and all of the other acts seemed only to be leading up to the star performance.

But that's why the audition shows are so important. Some people get really upset at the weeks and weeks of auditions and Hollywood tryouts, but if we hadn't gone through those and become so immersed in them that the judges' top 24 matched our own top 24 in most cases, we might look at these first shows and wonder where the judges found all of these losers.

I wasn't excited about tonight group; I had it taped and fast forwarded through the last half of most of the songs. I listened enough to say, yep or nope and then listened to the judges.
Ended up voting for Aaron. Second choice was Lee and then from there it was anybodies game.

I slept through a couple of the girls performances and the boys too. I did like Arron, Joe , the very last guy and the one kinda older guy with a guitar and the think he Chinese American.

A couple of them guys hurt my ears. They pushed it too hard and a couple were just way off key.

yep Kara, with her Casey comments. Sure didn't enjoy that at all. She reminded me of doing a poor imitation of Paula doing that. Paula had her favorites we all knew, but she at least did it with a bit of grace.

You can tell when Ellen really enjoys a singer, her eyes light up and she just glows. She doesn't even have to say a word.

Watching it right now ...enjoying

**Joe**. I liked him. he reminded me of that young David A. Very handsome young man too.

**Tyler** might be interesting to watch. I expected better though.
I remember Simon rubbishing Adam at first.
I would like to see him do INX stuff. Might not be intense enough though and would need a nose job if he wants to do sexy hunk rock star thing either that or dirty and rough himself up a bit more.

**Lee** Strong voice ...he will go on (voice wandered off key a little) sometimes in a strong voice it does not matter.

*John* ... he is attractive but he bombed. What a shame. I hope he gets another chance.

*Michael* ...unexpected almost feminine voice from that big bloke. I liked it though. I like him too.

*Alex Lambert* ...(any relation to our Adam? no can;t see it.) SIGH!. He is ok but needs a make over and some dancing moves. I think he was too scared. Hate the mullet.

***Casey*** ...nice warble in his voice ...echoes of Cat Stevens (voice). (((settle kara!!!!!!)))
He looks like he just stepped out of Jesus Christ Superstar. (Webber's version).

*Andrew* ...Very nice ...sounds like our Australian Guy Sebastian. He can sing ...did not like the song.

I hate to say it, but I thought ***Casey*** had the most different voice (the warble).Three stars.
Two stars next to the ones staying( I reckon.)
One star next to the maybe going home performers.

Some were ok but so far nothing outstanding. Missed the first couple.
Of course it's painfully obvious there is no Adam. :(
I missed the girls.

Who do you think will go?

I feel bad for some of these kids who have never been in front of this many people or done a live show before. They looked scared to death. Also, they do not get enough guidance in the choice of song - just after they sing that it's not the right song. seems like the judges this season is telling them what kind of song they'd like to hear the singer tries when they are telling them it's not the right song choice.

Overall, boy's night was a little of a letdown for me. As someone said, No Adam! Lee got almost no exposure during the auditions and Hollywood week, but ended at the top of my list last night. I love Aaron and can picture him being the next Garth Brooks in about 20 years. His age and inexperience may hurt him this year, but I bet he stays around in country music for a long time. I like Casey's voice and hope his thing with Kara and his looks don't play against him. Funny to think that someones being that good looking could hurt his chances. If last night had been the first time I had heard Andrew, I won't have paid him much notice. Hopefully he will come back strong over the next few weeks. Joe had something there too that's going to make me keep an eye out for him next week. Tim will be going home for sure in my book, but not sure who the other one will be. Does anyone know why he was called back? Did someone else get kicked out?

Casey is ahead of the pack - despite Kara's awkward remarks, and the disturbance of the flow, when it should have been his moment. Then, I'd say, Aaron, Joe, Lee, Alex, Andrew, should make it. Tyler, John Park, Mike, Todrick, will probably stay. I expect Tim will likely go, and Jermaine, since I cannot remember his song. I was most disappointed in Tyler & Andrew - right now, I view Casey as the frontrunner, boys & girls - but that can change so quickly.

Casey is a package, handsome, good voice, nice guitar, love his hair, clothes, AND he behaved like a gentleman & an adult while Kara continued to get her point across, The judges should practice the same self control, expected from the contestants. Casey will be fortunate if her behavior doesn't turn some voters away, not only from Casey, but the entire show. Kara is beautiful, famous, talented, lives the good life - you'd think she'd count her blessings & practice a smidgen of professionalism...

Bad night. I'm so glad I watched all of the tryouts. They sure didn't come through last night. Still thinking that Lee Dewyze had the edge, even though he didn't show it last night. Casey James is next - he actually did better than anyone else last night. I agree, ditch the silly Kara thing. Poor guy, having to stand there and go through that.
Aaron Kelly, and Munoz were next best, IMHO. Would like to hear big Mike sing a different song. I was disappointed in Andrew Garcia, but hope he sticks around and shows us what I saw in the tryouts.

Out - any of the remainder, but I thought Tyler Grady and Alex Lambert were really weak! Well, so was Tim Urban.

I didn't vote, basically because I don't think any of the guys stand a chance in the final. Anyway, not at this point.

Casey appears comfortably out front & you can cut & paste & ya gotta another Kris. A safe choice. Two similar types in two years won't help the show. My sophomore college grand likes Andrew & she's sticking with him, despite his ho/hum performance. I'm always suspicious of Idol, and the numbers & voting, so I suspect they wanted Andrew/Crystal moved back a notch to inspire more voting & stronger competition, & I bet they rise to the occasion.

Did I hear Alex say that he'd only performed three times in a coffee shop, or something like that??? If so, I'm thinking he could move up...I do like the judges being more forceful from the get go, tho Kara should chill & decide if she wants to be a judge or a Casey groupie...of course, she was pretty close to the same way with Adam, or was that my imagination?

Well, I'm glad I didn't place any bets. Not one of my predictions came true. I hate it that Joe was eliminated. He was one of the five best guys.

As for the girls, we lost two of the four I called interchangeable, so I'm not surprised, except for one thing: Is Haeley this season's Sanjaya? Are she and Tim the VFTW poster children? I haven't heard anything about the Vote for the Worst site this year, but keeping those two seems suspicious.

Allison looked terrific and her voice put all of this season's girls to shame.

Just as I suspected: Tim Urban and Haeley Vaughn are the VFTW picks.

http://www.votefortheworst.com/

In case you don't have time to go to their site, here's a paragraph where they congratulate themselves on keeping the worst performers in the contest:

"Well that was one great results show. It was a double VFTW Victory! Tim Urban and Haeley Vaughn, our 2 picks, were both safe. And going home were some of the early favorites on the show: Ashley Rodriguez, Tyler Grady, and Janell Wheeler. Also Joe Munoz went home, but no one knew who he was, so no one cared. Poor kid. Keep on voting for Tim and Haeley and let's get them into the top 12 and then on the tour. Thanks to everyone for voting their hearts out for Tim and Haeley. Next week, we have to vote twice as hard since people will be pissed that they survived."

I also liked Queer Eye, all Larry David shows, Big Love, Bored to Death - the problem with many of the series is: I don't know they are on & good until I miss so much that I don't feel like I can catch up.

I watch tons of TV, but I don't like science fiction or fantasy of any sort, so I've never seen 'Lost' or 'Heroes' or some of the other popular shows that fall into that category. I love all of the Thursday night NBC comedies, most of the Monday night CBS comedies, and all of the Wednesday night ABC comedies. I love 'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy' and I miss 'King of the Hill.'

I'm delighted that 'Southland' got picked up by TNT and the new episodes will start to air this Tuesday night. I like all of the 'Law and Order' shows. I like any hospital show, especially 'House,' but I have to admit that I've never seen acting as bad as it is on 'Mercy.' Where did they find all of those bad actors and actresses? I like any show about lawyers and the legal process.

I'm beginning to get annoyed by the CSI shows because it's preposterous to show crime scene investigators interrogating witnesses and getting involved in car chases. I'd rather just see them solving cases by processing the evidence.

I'm not up on any of the cable shows because I canceled my premium TV channels as soon as 'The Sopranos' was over. I've bought the DVD's of 'Dexter,' though, and I think I'd probably like 'Nurse Jackie.'

I'm looking forward to the return of 'Rescue Me.' I really miss it when it's gone.

My favorites too although 24 annoys me lately, I mean, how many traitors get through security and how come Jack Bauer can be beaten to a pulp and tortured and within minutes be looking like nothing happened?!! I don't like anything violent so watching those parts are difficult, usually I am on my lap top to distract me.
I also love Amazing Race as I enjoy the scenery of the different countries as well as the challenges/road blocks that are based on some life style or ethnic experience of that country.
And every summer I get sucked into Big Brother. I have a DVR so we can record 2 programs at the same time, watch them later and zoom thru those pesky commercials.
Hubby and I like watching Food Network, he does more than I do actually and I am benefiting by it. Lately I do more cleaning the kitchen than cooking, I prefer it that way tongue_smilie
And when The Apprentice starting adding the celebrities, it became more interesting, lots of big egos LOL, a new one is due to start soon.

I've never watched '24,' mainly because I can't take Kiefer Sutherland seriously. I saw him play too many twerps when he was younger and can't accept him as the hero in any situation.

I feel the same way about David Caruso. In my mind, he's always the twerpy little freckled leader of the Irish gang on 'Hill Street Blues.'

Lotz of plot twists in Damages, I like the action & the actors, this year features Lily Tomlin, Martin Short, the regulars are super - it's not easy to keep up, but I quit trying & enjoy the fast pace. I think I read Wikipedia or some review that helped. I love it when Ted Danson is on, he's very good, love him in Bored to Death too...I love the HBO stuff, without commercials, but, often, when I'm right on the edge of my seat, it's over & I have to wait a week, it's always a let down when those kinda series are over, kinda like Idol...

I am hoping it was a dream.

Am I the only one who watches a soap opera? lol I try to eat my lunch at 1pm & then watch Days of Our Lives. Ridiculous stories but I am adicted to the over-the-top acting.

My favorite night time show, Fringe, is temporarily on hiatus. I only get 4 channels... CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS. Neilson had me keep a diary last week & it was mostly empty.

ha ha ha the only thing that happens in soapies is the partner swapping.
Hasn't Brooke in the Bold and the Beautiful married or had a baby with her father in law his two sons ...her son inlaw etc ...and now her sisters are working their way through the cast of men too.

I save myself a lot of time by looking up episodes (scripts) on the sites because we are way behind you, that way I don't have to look at the shows.

You know like the scene in the Lost Boys where the Grandfather says he gets the TV program magazine so he does not need the TV ...so funny .

Just general movie/tv forum would be really great!

There is no WOW. I missed the first few singers, including Mike and Casey. The only guys with distinctive voices are Lee, Alex and Andrew. The rest are completely forgettable. Aaron, the 16 y/o, has a promising voice but it's common in country. However, since country is so homogenized these days, he could have a nice career twanging away. Now, if I could only figure out how - or why - they're choosing these awful songs!

Adam was great on Leno and did make this year's men look second rate. I read that Crystal was hospitalized for complications of diabetes, but don't know if that has been comfired.

Michael gets my vote for most improved. He had been in the middle for me until last night and is now at the top of my list, along with Lee. Aaron, Andrew and Casey come next for me. I like country, so I guess that's why I really like Aaron. I keep wanting Andrew to do better because we all know he can. Hope he really brings it next week. Must say Tim did better than I expected, but I'm guessing he and John Parks will go this week. Todrick, Jermaine and Alex are just haging in there. So,that's my very unexpert rating of the men.

Here's a link to Adam's performance last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFPUrhjECsQ Video quality is not the best but the song is terrific and he got in those high notes we loved so much on Idol. If you go to hulu.com, you can get the backstage interview he did following the show. Jay dropped in to the interview to say he thinks Sleepwalker will be the biggest hit on the album.

John Park is SO nice, but forgettable, lacking star quality - I see him & Tim leaving this week; however, if the voting goes like last week, my top picks might leave, whew. Lee, Aaron, Andrew, Casey, Mike, were good - Mike's best performance so far, Casey's vocal was so, so but his guitar carried him to maybe the 2nd best performance of the night, IMO. I thought Lee was right there with Mike/Casey. The show was better this week.

When I read about Crystal's diabetes situation online, she was reported as the frontrunner by several sources. Anyone else read that and, or other articles that give more details?

Question: Is it a rule that an even number of boys, girls leave each week? I'd think the ones with the fewest votes would leave & that it wouldn't matter if it was a boy or girl.

I've nursing baby Bantys, born in this freezing weather, so my online time has been limited & I haven't gotten to see Adam on the show last night. & hope to do that first chance...Adam's performance, along with Beau Bridges up for the academy award makes it a good entertainment week for me:

Michael was very good. It has long seemed to me that they make an effort to get a good performance on the first and the last slots. Park is the one I mistakenly refferred to as Cho- no idea where I got that. Poor Todrick--lst year Adam changed songs as much as humanly possible, and more, and Garcia is praised on high for totally changing Straight Up, but when Todrick does he gets chewed out! No wonder he's confused.

Yes, I agree. Todrick takes the big songs and he changes them so much, and not in a good way, that you long to hear the originals instead. Jermaine did the same thing. After listening to him, I just wanted to hear the pure Sam Cooke version.

The girls won't be on in my time zone for a few more hours, but I just watched my tape of the boys from last night. I guess Adam Lambert spoiled me completely. I don't get the same thrill from listening to any of these guys that I got from each and every performance by Adam last season, and to a slightly lesser degree, the thrill I got from most of Michael Johns' performances and David Archuleta's 'Imagine" the year before.

Michael Lynche sounded better this week, but it's still not a voice that really intrigues me. The only intriguing voices I heard in this set were Alex Lambert's and Lee Dewyze's.

But the most interesting thing about last night's show, as far as I'm concerned, was the surliness with which crazy Kara critiqued Casey's performance. Did anyone else get the feeling that he or someone else must have told her to back off? First she insulted his vocals and then there was that thing about "dirt": Simon said Casey's voice didn't have enough grit. Casey was surprised and asked: "Not enough grit?" Simon said: "No, more like sand." Kara then piped up: "More like dirt!" And she repeated it for good measure and then repeated it a third time in case anyone had missed it. She's being so unprofessional that it's outrageous and embarrassing.

Zu, very good post!! I started to write last night, but decided to wait until I slept on it & find that I'm even stronger today - Kara's treatment of that young man = embarrassingly poor taste. Before I talk about the girls, I have one more thing to say about the guys. The people in one AI chat room are trying to decide whether Jermaine looked more like Urkel, Ed Grimley, or Peewee Herman when he performed last night.

Now on to the girls. I actually thought all of the girls did better than they did last week. I still like Paige, Katie, and Katelyn a lot, but you're absolutely right, Sherry: Lilly, Crystal, and Siobhan are the top three.

The girls are so much better than the guys that I wish they could dump four guys and no girls this week.

Katelyn was very good, so pretty & talented, just not quite up to speed with the other three. I've forgotten the name of the contestant in 'the outfit', but it was the best outfit every worn on Idol by a girl, one of the best outfits I've seen a female performer wear ever. Someone said Vera Wang - is that correct?? The contestant had the perfect figure, hair, etc, it was drop dead good looking, WOW!! I started watching, wondering how much of my time I'd be willing to waste. Crystal made good, but was followed by several who weren't. I thought a few had good voices, nothing very distinctive, but pleasant. What I think many of them don't understand is the critical ability to emote. That's what made Adam stand head and shoulders above the rest last year. He had the experience of stage work that gave him the commanding presence that most of the others lacked. And that's what - to varying degrees - made Crystal, Lilly, Siobhan and Paige stand out. I think, despite what Simon said, that Siobhan turned in the best performance of the night. Lilly next.

I get really frustrated with judges who picked several 16 and 17 year olds and then tell them they need experience! So why didn't they keep some terrific singers who HAD experience? Like the poor young woman who'd had so much bad luck in life! Honestly, when you think of all their bragging about the mountains of talent in this year's auditions, you wish they'd kept some of that!

OK, I'm not surprised that Jermaine and Hayley (sp?) went home, but seriously. Didi and Tim should have joined them. I think the Vote for the Worst crowd must be keeping Tim on; he is hands down the worst singer there. I can't believe that out of all those they sent home, there wasn't someone better they could have brought back.

It was nice to see Danny Gokey back on stage - and a surprise to hear that he's decided on a country route. Guess he can see those dollars in his rear view mirror, lol! If he tours with Sugarland, he's sure to gain a huge fan base. Look for best-selling albums from this AI alum.

I think Jermaine is funny, but I don't really like him, personality-wise. He can't take constructive criticism and nothing is his fault. It's either the band fault or that he didn't learn how to sing like that in church. yaddy yaddy yaddy. well, it's not enough talent to keep him around.

Well, Didi and Tim will go eventually. They are horrible. Thank goodness for DVR so I can 4Xff through all the horrible singing!

Deb, that's just one more reason why the so-called judges should have picked older contestants; these 16 y/o's are children and that experience was crushing for Haeley. I realize that some young contestants do have stage experience; Jordin Sparks (winner a couple seasons back) had even recorded with some name singers. But look what happened on the bench after Haeley was cut; the high schoolers sat there sobbing. I'm thinkin' child abuse...

I'm not really serious about the child abuse thing, Nicole. Yes, the contestants auditioned and many were rejected. But that's not the same as being thrust on stage to sing for your life before millions of viewers. That's why I think more thought should be given to the age and maturity of those who are chosen to go on. It simply isn't fair for judges to make harsh judgments and suggest that so-and-so just needs "more experience". They should have made that judgment in the vetting process.

Maybe that's a rant that doesn't belong here, but it is more about singing; it's about how we treat people. The producers called Tim back and then Simon made cutting comments about how right they were in the first place. Not necessary; not even germane to the show.

Well, I did not enjoy seeing Danny Gokey again. It just made me wonder for the hundredth time how on earth he managed to get into the top three, and especially how he managed to stay in the competition longer than Matt Giraud and Allison Iraheta. He still sounded like he was choking for breath at the end of each phrase and he still talks too much. The only difference is that he now speaks twice as quickly as before. He sounded like a speed freak when he was talking to Ryan about his new career. He also was off pitch (flat) during his entire performance.

It was very sad when Haeley was leaving, but she was only intriguing because she was supposed to be a black girl who wanted to be a country music singer. That's what made the judges keep her, I'm sure, so why did she sing a Beatles song the first week and a Miley Cyrus song the second week? I remember her being good as a country singer.

Michele was one of the most beautiful contestants ever, but there was nothing exciting about her beyond that. Poor John had a great voice, but we never heard it sound great after the audition. That also applies to Jermaine. Great audition and lousy on the show. Besides, someone who insists God wants him to be in the top 12 is just asking for trouble. I wonder if he'll have a crisis of faith now.

I don't agree that the judges should only choose older contestants. Allison was 16, Aaron is 16, and they're not the only ones who were or are accomplished singers at 16. There are impressive contestants of 16 and 17 every season. I think people can be childish at any age, however, and we've all seen those fools who refuse to accept the judges' criticism during the audition shows. Most of them are way past 16. So maybe they need a psychiatrist to help in the selection process by gauging a person's mental age. Sometimes it doesn't take a psychiatrist to know. I'm sure that's the reason Tim Burton came back instead of that boy the cameras followed into the bathroom after he was cut.

I think the judges' comments influence a lot of voters. I also think they rate those higher who are "marketable", regardless of who has a better singing voice.

Gokey is OK, but he is also a human interest story because of the death of his wife, which raises the ratings of the show.

Like most of you, I'm disappointed in the talent pool this season. I don't agree that the girls are better than the boys this year. I see one or two good ones in both genders.

And since I am bearing my soul, I also think DeGeneres needs to be cut too. She is clueless as to what a good performance is and is not.

Just my two cents.

Mamajack, I liked Gokey, too - last season. I never thought he was as good as Adam but he was better than Kris. My favorite performance of his was the show tunes (?) night when he dressed up and sang a jazz number. It was terrific. I think he'll do well in the country genre, but I can't stand what passes for country these days so I won't be following his career.

The tattoo girl (and I think it was Megan) was really good; she just had no maturity or judgment when it came to responding to the judges. When she said she didn't care, no one did and she got voted off.

Ah, indie as in individualist, huh? It's a new one for me too. I think of Megan and Lilli as a throwback from the Janis Joplin era.

It's Crystal that's most like - or would like to be like - Janis Joplin. I see a lot of emulation there. I think she's good but I'm not sure she has enough depth to carry through to win.

For a short lesson in 'indie' music, see this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_music

I'm pretty much on board with most of you. Siobhan, Lilly, then Crystal. But that could change with a night's performance. Any of them are worthy - at this time. I'm glad Haely is gone. And sorry Michele didn't get more time to show what she had to give. I tend to agree with the comment about the young singers. I think the age should be 18 to 30. The kids need to finish school first! And don't give them false hopes if you're then going to tell them they need to mature more.

I like Lee and Michael, in that order. The young kid has a really good voice, but not a recognizable one. I wish Lee would develop or show some personality. He just seems to slump...but he has a very recognizable voice and I like it!! Mike has the personality. And a big voice.

I like Danny Gokey, and I am excited for him. I was glad to see him back, and I hope he has great success. So, that's where we differ...

Is Megan the one that stood stiff as a rail and tried to move her hips a little when she sang? If so, I was always uncomfortable when she was on stage. I think she and Didi have similar styles - voice-wise. And that's what I don't like about them. The slurs are taken apart and sung separately, almost accented. Hurts my ears.

And that's my 2 cents worth...(You get what you pay for.)
Remember, you’re unique – just like everybody else.

It was nice to hear Danny G sounding so optimistic and happy. I think country will be a good fit for him. I thought Simon was harder than he needed to be on Haeley, but am glad she is gone and hope she will look back on the experience and remember how many others she beat out to get in the top 20. She has to have something going for her or she would not have made it that far. I do think it will be hard for her to have to sit and rewatch the shows with her friends and hear the harsh comments over and over. I like the judges that can find something positive to say or at least give some advise the singers can put to use.

Glad I'm not the only one that has never heard of Indie singers.

I think I'd take the remote away from that girl! Sheesh!

I was thinking about this season's lack of talent and remembered the season when it was loaded. Jennifer Hudson was voted off (go figure that one) and Fantasia won. She may not be your cup of tea, but she sure was mine. I loved her sense of self even though she was only 19. Here she is on Idol, talking back to Simon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiHSVmPruyo&feature=related

And here she is singing Elton John - to Elton, who just about cried. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSQt_X2AUak

There's not a girl on this year who can hold a candle to Fantasia, Jennifer, LaToya London or Diana deGarmo. Remember Diana? At sixteen, she ended up in the final two, despite Simon's critical reviews and went on to Broadway.

LaToya came in fourth that season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sBuqvicuDQ

So where did they get these 'talented' singers this year???? Season 3 was packed.

Haeley is a most fortunate 16 year old to have gone as far as she did, cute as a button & charming; plus, her Idol accomplishments will fancy up her resume - how many kids her age have had such a run on national TV??!! IMO, Haeley is set for a career. It appears she didn't have strong teenie bopper support (maybe it was split)...Simon is always a bit harsh, but truthful, the way he sees it, and, if he's wrong, he tells the world that too. Since I have 6 grands very near Haeley's age, I suspect she's already moving on, without missing a beat...

I was listening to the radio today 8.30 this Monday morning.
I heard that voice and almost screamed the house down ...he is HERE in Australia!!!!
Adam Lambert!!!!
It was kept quiet until now evidently he flew in to be here at our Gay Mardi Gra .
They played "What do you want from me." and it was a very good interview.

As I've mentioned before, I follow the TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly chat threads for American Idol and I'm amazed by the number of people who keep insisting that the producers should get rid of Ellen.

That's almost the same as saying someone should get rid of Oprah. Don't they realize the power Ellen has? She could get rid of the producers before they could get rid of her. In any case, she has already signed a 5-year contract with AI and she'll be the one choosing Simon's replacement.

Angele, I have loved Ellen ever since she was still doing standup comedy bits on VH1. She can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. I think she's a great addition to the show. Her comments are far more substantive and sensible than anything Randy and Kara say. Furthermore, I think she's having a positive effect even on those two. Ever since she joined the panel, Randy hasn't done any more of his vague critiques: "So what's going on? Hmmm, I don't know.... For me, for you... Dawg, I just wasn't feelin' it." Kara's also made more sense in the last few weeks. During the auditions, she seemed to be making a bid for the Paula spot by concentrating on people's appearance instead of giving them good advice.

I'm reserving judgment on Ellen re: AI. The banana thing was a bit silly and some of her other comments seem much like her brand of comedy on her own show. I love it there but I'm not sure it serves the contestants very well.

Regarding Randy: I haven't seen any of those positive changes. The only thing I have noticed is that he doesn't constantly - constantly - use the word 'pitchy'. That's an improvement.

The dancers on the Oscars were amazing, and I recognized so many faces from "So You Think You Can Dance." It's great that Adam Shankman hired all of them for the show.

Will anyone else admit to watching Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney's wedding? The wedding singer was Jason Castro. I can almost hear Simon's voice, dripping with contempt: "That performance sounded like something you'd hear at a wedding."

I'm glad Adam now has the money and ability to do things that are so much fun for him.

I just saw Simon on Jay Leno. I really love seeing him in interviews. He said he misses Paula a lot and will be doing something with her in the future, possibly even his X-Factor show. He said Crystal Bowersox is his favorite contestant this season. When Jay asked him why the runners-up have been more successful than the winners in recent years, Simon said the show is too much of a popularity contest and whereas he liked last season's winner, there's no question Adam should have won. I couldn't agree with him more. That final vote was a travesty.

I agree that Adam is more talented than Chris. But in the end, Adam is doing what he wants and love, so it doesn't really matter. It's a great forum to get the publicity that you normally wouldn't. I notice that many of them who are not making records are doing broadway. And if you are not talented enough, or if you're a pain in the 'you know what', the record label will drop you. So the talent will speak for itself and it's up to the contestant to make the most of their 15 minutes fame. If they didn't then it's their loss.

It doesn't seem that the judges were impressed with Lilly, but I really like her. I felt bad for Katie Stevens (the first girl). I think she has an old soul, having spent alot of time with her grandmother and taking care of her.

Maybe I'm off but Lilly didn't grab me tonight, but she's still in the top three. My work schedule has been heavy/hectic, so maybe I expected too much. Boring.

I really like Didi and Lacey but have been disappointed in their performances or song choices of late. I was hoping they'd improve. I'd like to see them both get further in the competition. So far, I think the girls are better than the guys. I remember some of the girls performances. I have to struggle to remember any of the guys.
I love Lilly's voice but there's something about her that I don't like. Can't put my finger on it. Whatever it is, it won't matter on an album or hearing her on the radio though. A good singing voice and performance can win over any personality quirks. Besides, this is a singing competition, not a personality competition. Can't wait to see what they all do this week.

About winners vs runner ups ...in Australia the winner was always locked up under contract for a year after winning.
This ties them to whatever the record company and Idol wants, rather than them really being able to get out there and sell themselves while still fresh in the public's mind.
In fact most winners have ended up making 3or4 million in the year but don't see a cent of it ...it all goes to the record company.

It it no wonder that when one of our favourite winners recently had to sell his home to make ends meet people felt that not only did the show rip off the viewers, but they ripped off the winners too. I stress I speak of the now defunct Australian Idol not American Idol. I do have a feeling this may be the last Idol for the USA as well, since Simon is gone at the end of the season.
So let's try to enjoy this one if we can.
I still love young talent ...someone like Adam only comes along once in a lifetime, we were so lucky to have shared last year's Idol or as I refer to it as Adam's American Idol.

I watched the show, then ran through it again, fast forwarding so I could just listen to the singers, with my eyes closed. And here's what I thought: Katelyn and Paige were just awful. I think they should be the two to go. Although I have not liked Didi in the past, I really liked what she did tonight. I always like Siobhan, but tonight's House in New Orleans wasn't all that great. Loved her last week doing the Aretha Franklin song. I really like Lacey. She has a very unusual voice that would be instantly recognizable on a recording. I have also liked Lilly Scott, but I didn't like her doing "I Fall to Pieces" tonight. I felt it was just all wrong for her. Judges didn't agree with me, though. I also like Crystal, but probably not as much as everyone else does. She still strikes me as a street singer. But I wouldn't shout foul if she won. And Katie Stevens - she has a great voice, an older voice, but still she gets those "needs experience", "doesn't know who she is as an artist" comments. She has a good voice, just not a different voice.

If I had to pick a winner right now, I couldn't.

I wasn't jumping up and down for anyone this week either. Guess it's Siobhan, Crystal and Lilly for me at the top. Paige and Katie might be my choice of who should go this week, partly because I think Katie would better off not going on tour at her age. I was glad last year that Adam came in second. Gives him more freedom to do what he wants to with his career. My guess is in 15 years no one will know who Chris was, but Adam will still be big. I'm looking forward to the guys tonight.

I definitely think Paige and Katelyn should be the ones to go; they were awful. Katelyn is just ordinary and should never have been in the top 24. Paige does have a great voice but her song choices are terrible. Don't these contestants get any coaching or advice?

I thought Didi and Lacey did well last night. If I close my eyes when the contestants sing, I ask myself if I would know who they are if I heard them on the radio. I would definitely be able to ID those two.

Siobhan is emerging as a favorite for me. The girl has some pipes and she's fearless. Lilly was disappointing but still interesting. Crystal is a Janis Joplin reprise and that's why she stands out above the rest in a world of homogenized music.

The only boys I'm even looking forward to hearing tonight are Andrew, Alex and Lee. Somebody surprise me, please!

I was impressed with Michael Lynch. I like Casey and Alex Lambert. I even thought Todrick was good and I thought he was theatrical and would be good for broadway. So when Simon said that, I thought wow.

Oh, after last night's dreadful performance, let's hope Katelyn leaves! That was godawful.

I was surprised tonight by a couple of performances, chiefly Tim's. You could have knocked me over with a feather. The guy actually has a voice and can sing! Based on the last two weeks, who knew? I liked Todrick, too. Still like Alex a lot, but I've given up on Andrew. You'd think the guy would pick a song - something other than a girl's song to start with - that would showcase his voice and connect with the audience. I'm ready for him to leave, too. I've already forgotten the rest...

With the storms here last night, I could only watch bits and pieces as the tv came in and out. Oh how I hate this new digital tv. Only got to watch a few performances before couldn't get a signal at all.

From what I was able to watch I was more wowed by some of the girls than the guys. A few of the guys were definitely better than they had been.

I'm waiting for when the guys and gals are finally having to compete together. I think, some of the real talent will start to come out.

Maybe it just me, but it seemed the guys just kind of played it safe. I'm wondering with a lot of them how are they going to sound when they start getting into the music of selected artists and especially when they have to sing without their guitars.

You're right, Alma, the show is over guitar-ed, Crystal is good & Casey is very good.

What about Kara - she's married, right? And, Simon is engaged? Just the roll model for teen girls, boys too, I suppose. When Kara isn't touching, patting, whispering, making goo-goo eyes & laying on Simon & the counter, & behaves like an adult, which is less frequent all the time, she does a decent, level critique.

Michael seems to be stepping it up each week and is way out ahead of the other guys in my book. I just wished his song last night had lasted longer. Lee and Andrew were both disappointing. Tim did much better than I've heard him before. I still like Casey and Aaron. Alex's voice for some reason does nothing for me. He acts like a sweet guy, but always looks so afraid. Todrick, if I remember right, has already been on Broadway with Fantasia or at least toured with her. The song he picked was very much that style. Not sure who I think should go. Probably Tim, in spite of him having a fairly good night last night and I guess Alex or Andrew or Todrick. Strange how someone that was so far out in front could end up possibly not being in the top 12.

I want to jot down my reactions before the results show because things got turned upside down on both of this week's performance shows.

Crystal Bowersox is still untouchable, of course, and her choice of a Tracy Chapman song was brilliant, but Lacey and Didi, who had never made a good impression on me before, were both much better than the rest of my top five girls -- Siobhan, Katelyn, Lilly, and Paige. It may have helped that Didi sang "Rhiannon," one of the prettiest songs ever written.

The same thing happened on the night the guys performed. Michael Lynche, who had never made any impression on me, suddenly became the frontrunner. Alex and Aaron didn't disappoint me, but Lee and Andrew fell down. And then there was little Tim Burton, who suddenly sounded great. When VFTW chose him as the worst, I couldn't argue with that choice. Now I'm glad he didn't get voted out in the first couple of weeks. It's the first time I've been grateful for VFTW.

Well that was a yucky outcome. Lilly and Alex go home while Katie and Andrew stay??? Ridiculous. Katelyn should have gone, but I had mixed feelings about Todrick. He's got lots of talent. I just hope Lilly and Alex get picked up by a saavy recording exec who knows how to market them. They have distinctive voices and stand head and shoulders above the vanilla voices we hear so much these days.

I found myself worrying about Crystal tonight. She showed none of the usual joy expressed when Ryan announces the winners. She didn't interact with the others and sat and cried through Lilly's swan song. And although she stood during her performance on Tuesday, she sat for the judge's review. I wonder just how ill she is and hope she's getting good care.

This is an interesting piece from the WSJ. If they're right, neither Crystal nor Michael will win.

I don't even have to write my thoughts anymore. Now they are the same as Alma's!!
Lilly leaving surprised and saddened everybody! Me included. So wrong! I love her voice. I still think she chose the wrong song this week.
And Andrew over Alex! I was ready for Andrew to go, he hasn't done anything since the beginning, so disappointing. Alex has a unique voice that I like. Todrick will do the Broadway thing - and will do well.
And I had the same thought about Crystal. I don't think she's well. She seems so fragile.

Bad night!

I noticed Crystal's not looking well too. I've been wondering the last couple weeks if she might be pregnant? Can't tell from the tops she wears. Pregnant and diabetic would be a bad combination for her right now.

I'm sad to lose Katelyn, Lilly, and Alex. Alex had become my favorite in the last couple of weeks, and Katelyn and Lilly were always in my top five for the girls. Todrick was never one of my favorites, but he did perform exceptionally well on Wednesday night.

Poor Alex was so crushed. He'd probably been reading the same reviews I had. So many critics agreed that he was the number-one guy, although Crystal is such a sure bet that he wouldn't have won in the end. How does the best guy not even get into the top 12?

I enjoyed seeing Matt Giraud. I can't believe Ryan Seacrest still mispronounces his name as "Girard."

Just remember, Zuzu, there are no sure bets. That was made perfectly clear by last year's end. I wish so much that Alex had stayed on because I think he would have continued to make progress, unlike Andrew who's sure to perform another chick song in the same manner he has all the others. Nice voice? Yes. Equal with Alex? Not by miles.

So true, Alma. In that context, I've been reading an interesting theory in the AI blogs. According to this theory, Siobhan is the perfect choice for a recording contract, but Simon learned from past seasons, especially the last one, that his excessive praise of a contestant turns viewers off and motivates them to vote for the runner-up. Last year he was predicting an Adam win from the start and unexpectedly ended up with Kris, so this year he's predicting a Crystal landslide because he really wants Siobhan to win and make money for him.

It makes perfect sense to me because Simon is a businessman and he knows marketing psychology. I have noticed that people resent the judges' praise of one contestant and feel, according to them, that the person is being "shoved down their throats." Odd, to say the least, because a judge, by definition, is supposed to tell us who's best and we're not supposed to resent this behavior.

I think what happened last year, was a vote against Adam, by people uncomfortable with him. Those people were split when voting for Kris and Danny, but when it was just Kris and Adam, the Kris and Danny vote combined to knock him out of first place..

But they were uncomfortable for various reasons, and one of the reasons was the supposed "favoritism" he was being shown. I would be very disillusioned if I believed so many people were merely blinded by bigotry and had no other reasons.

Besides, I have to believe AT&T had something to do with the final vote. Even if Danny's earlier voters rallied around Kris, that still shouldn't have defeated Adam, particularly in view of the certainty that he inherited the earlier voters for Allison, Matt, and others. The groundswell of appreciation for Adam seemed strong enough to defeat all of the other contestants combined in a fair voting system.

Is anyone else surprised that they didn't obscure Crystal's mouth with pixels when Katelyn was eliminated? The obscenity she came out with when she expressed her shock and disgust was so visible to me, and I'm not an experienced lip reader.

I read an article that said "I think that tweens and teens who have unlimited text messaging are running the show on American Idol. Most people think if they dial in a phone vote 10 times they are voting a lot, but mass texting has become too easy and those who have the resources and the know-how to do it affect the outcomes, to the detriment of the show. "

Sue and Zu, you are absolutely correct. I quit voting after learning that texters were voting literally thousands of times. And when the AT&T scandal - and it was a scandal - surfaced, I was completely disgusted with the voting. If it were fair, people would be limited to 5 votes, or 10, whatever; unlimited voting truly eliminates any vestige of fairness. Now when one of the judges remarks how this is a "singing contest", I just snort.

I missed the Crystal outburst. She just seemed so very unhappy from start to finish that I began to wonder about her health. Now I wonder why she cared about Katelyn's departure. Nothing lost there.

I personally think Katelyn had more talent than three or four of the remaining girls, but talent aside, it looked to me as though Katelyn and Alex had been extremely well liked by the other contestants. They seemed heartbroken to lose Katelyn and Alex, whereas the news of Lilly's elimination seemed to spark outrage rather than sadness.

Sue, you are so right about the teens and tweens ruining the show. The consensus in the AI chat rooms is that Katelyn and Lilly had to go because the average teenager today has never heard of Carole King or Patsy Cline, and those songs were completely unfamiliar to most of the viewers. Alex apparently had to go because people didn't like his haircut. Will Crystal's teeth doom her next? That's all anyone talks about, even now that they know she has type-one diabetes, which is the logical cause.

All Crystal has to do is glue in some temp caps, like Lauren Hutton did. The appearance of missing/decayed teeth is distracting on camera - her particular problem is likely hereditary (I got my dental degree on the internet), yet it looks like meth mouth. Sorta like Alex, had he lost his mullet, which he did modify, he might still be there. Mullets & meth mouth just turn people off.

Do recall that power texting was reported last year - ATT sponsored power texting parties @ a hotel in Little Rock & other locations, and taught fans how to power text & many people voted 10,000 times, very quickly, for Kris. It was all over national news & was a big issue for about 15 minutes. It is simple: Idol is about $$$ & ratings & Idol receives a cut of every vote that is cast. The Idol voting system is a well known, public fraud, which is overlooked because it's considered reality, entertainment, and, I suppose, out of the scope of the legal system. I dunno.

That is too bad with the teens texting. However, I believe that if you are good enough, you'll be recognize and your talent will be snatch up by a recording company. So, just to make it this far already said something about your talent. Hopefully, you have it to keep yourself there. And if you don't, well then I guess you don't deserve fame and fortune. I mean, look at Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry.

But how much do temp caps cost, Sherry? I don't get the impression that Crystal has any extra money lying around.

Ellen did the funniest interview, mostly about Kara, which I heard on XM, HLN. I hope someone else heard it, I got so tickled I cannot remember exactly what she said.

If Crystal would just get two temporary caps to glue on while she's on TV, then whiten the front, the problem wouldn't be so noticeable - dentists keep them in all sizes, all you do is super glue them on the existing tooth. My hub lost one on an eye tooth, when we were out of town, & with very little trouble, we located one, glued it back on, & no one knew the difference. I understand there's a pen to temporally whiten teeth, it actually paints the teeth for occasions & it disappears after a few days. I'm surprised the Hollywood handlers haven't already found a temp solution. It's not like Crystal is the first one - remember Elliott?? There really wasn't a temp fix for Elliott, but there are several that could work for Crystal.

BIG day here - we have sun!!!! Happy Weekend to all...

That cheap? Then she has no excuse, except the possibility of an allergy or some other physical reason. There has to be a reason, or, as you pointed out, the Hollywood handlers would have handled it.

I'm annoyed by the prospect of having only a couple of performances (Crystal's and Siobhan's) to look forward to. Todrick was irritating, but his performances were always a surprise. Just how far afield would he run with the latest song? Lilly and Katelyn were always interesting and Alex was the one most likely to improve every week throughout the competition. I foresee many boring hours ahead.

I never thought I'd say it or see it happen, but, it looks like the show is about done. I'm annoyed too &, it would seem, that Idol would see that their hunger for $$$, is strangling the show by allowing the VFTW people to slam dunk the show, with multiple voting, and Kara's behavior isn't helping either, and, of course, the skimpy talent is the major problem, no one there but, like you said, Crystal/Siobhan, and I'm not sure Crystal want's it, she's a free spirit & she appears to know she's going places, with or without the show, and, frankly, Siobhan seems to have considerably more style/confidence, that is, she's naturally stylish & confident. I suspect there will be a noticeable upgrade in the attitudes of the contestants this week, but maybe too late to capture & return the core of the viewers to the show. Unless Kradison is featured, with emphasis on the 'ad', I don't see much hope for the finale either.

Anyone have suggestions on some shows I could just start watching without having to take a review course?? Thx!

Forgot - if I can figure out the tooth thing, down here in no place Arky, there is absolutely zero reason why someone on the show doesn't know the trick & if they don't, it's no wonder the show is in such a mess. Did I mention that there is temp paint, frequently used in photo sessions, to disguise & improve darkened teeth. I guess I should emailing Idol, lol...
