Okay, here we go again. The show premieres January 19th with two new judges -- Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler -- and with a return to the old emphasis on big voices.

Everyone agrees the show went horribly astray last season because of the emphasis on singer-songwriters, the bad chemistry among the judges, and the tendency of almost every one of the contestants to plunk on a guitar while singing. The contestants will have fewer chances to play instruments this year, and no one's going to be the stereotypical mean judge.

In pre-show interviews, the judges said they're looking for big voices, like Kelly Clarkson's.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to the show or have you given up on it? Do you already hate the new judges or do you think they're a welcome change?

And did you all watch "The Sing-Off" with the terrific a capella groups? Every performance on every episode was a joy. I love that show!

I don't think I'll get in the mood to watch it till they are down to the last 10. :)

Really, Alan? I love watching some of them turn into prima donnas on group night during Hollywod Week. I hope they haven't changed that part of the format.

Yeppers, I hate all that pre stuff that drags on, and on, and on, and on. Even the top 10 aren't stars yet.

Not sure! I've been faithful for about five years now and some of it IS a big yawn. I quit listening to any judge except for Simon. I am not sure if I'll be bored by yet another freak show of tryouts, or just amazed again at how many freaks are out there and do not recognize themselves in the prior insanity!!!

Of course the national news is so repetitive and depressing, anything is better.

I am usually surprised by the guest judges who are not singers being more helpful than I expected (Quentin Tarantino being one)

I agree too much guitar last season.

Oh thanks Barb, it changes every day Monday-Friday. But on weekends I'm just to lazy to log in and put another one up. After being on a computer for 10 or 12 hours a day, Monday through Friday, I don't want to look at a computer unless I have to on the weekend :)

Ann, I said the top 10, but I may start watching at the top 32. I get annoyed early in the game when they kick off someone I think has potential..hehehe. I was pleased with the outcome last year, and thought either of the top two could have easily got top one. I loved both of them, so it didn't matter to me.

Should be an interesting year, with only one of the original judges remaining. Let's see how their chemistry works together. It starts tonight folks!!!

Many pleasant voices, but no standouts yet. The judges are much kinder than in years past. Randy seems to be goading the other two to make fun of the bad contestants, but they're not rising to the bait.

I DVRed the two nights and skipped some and just fast forwarded thru most of the rest, unless a personal story looked promising, or one of the singers for whom they showed an entire audition turned out good.
A few cute moments, like one guy singing outside who was drowned out by a boat horn in New Orleans.
The only one stuck in my mind today is the kid with the frizzy hair, did Bohemian Rhapsody. Interesting voice. The girls pretty much blend into a big blob.

I liked the frizzy-haired kid too, and the last contestant -- the girl with the special-needs child. Still no standouts, though. I really am impressed by Jennifer Lopez. It's so nice to know that she's so nice.

So far no one singer has 'wowed' me, but I'm loving Stephen Tyler! He's a hoot and a half! Hilarious!

Missed wednesday (DH thought I was kidding that I wanted to watch it) on Thursday I really liked that last girl (what are the odds on these 'last person of the day is excellent' things?) She sang well, and then very quickly started to show some great personality and spunk! Singing with Tyler, egging him on. She should be one to watch.

The odds would be astronomical, I'm sure, but they have nothing to do with it. It's easy for the producers to save the best for last in the holding room. I did think it was funny that they pretended the girl was the last on the second day, but the judges were wearing the clothes they wore on the first day.

I've now been "wowed" by several auditions, but the only one I remember is the White House intern.

HA! caught 'em! I think thats called continuity (error)
I must have missed the intern. Are they adding any of these to the website?

The intern must have auditioned on Wednesday, when you missed the show. She immediately caused a furor in the TV Guide and EW chat forums. People called her "arrogant," but she really wasn't. Just poised and self-confident. And why shouldn't she be? She just graduated from Harvard and she's working at the White House. She has already accomplished a lot. She did say she loves the current president and I think that will cost her some votes if she gets into the final 10.

There's a tape of her audition on this page. Watch it. It's funny. Randy punched her in the face by accident when he came in for the day.

I think the Idol producers are always going to be looking for another Adam Lambert, but one without the characteristics that repelled so many moronic bigots.

Last night they tried to clone Adam for us when they showed us the high-functioning autistic guy with Tourette's Syndrome, whose name I don't recall. They even showed us a clip of Adam Lambert auditioning in San Francisco way back when, so that he'd be on our minds when we saw the new guy, who has a girlfriend and a baby and doesn't dress or move with dramatic flair. He did have a good voice and actually did sound like Adam, but he didn't have Adam's looks or charm.

I personally think the poor guy's doomed if they try to push the Lambert comparison too far. Adam's fans won't vote for him because he lacks the great personality and self-confidence that endeared Adam to them as much as his voice did, and Adam's detractors, who mostly didn't want to admit they were voting against him for being gay and therefore said they hated his "screaming," will have to vote against this guy's "screaming" too.

I agree, he definitely wasn't Adam Lambert, so I don't think they should push in that direction. Probably more, because he doesn't have the experience Adam had under his belt than anything. Other than that, I did like their presentation of him. It sounds like he has taken so much on already in his young life. I'm wondering if he can withstand the pressures that are about to fall upon him, in just competing for a title? Turrets will make that difficult. We'll see... I haven't even picked favorite choices yet. To early in the game. My heart strings have been pulled for a few, but no choices made.
