I'm so excited: It starts tomorrow night. Last year's idea of choosing only the top 10 was disappointing to fans for various reasons, so this time they're going to choose a top 20 again and bring back the all-star dancers from past seasons when the 20 have been whittled down to 10.
Nigel and Mary will be joined by guest judges most of the time because Adam Shankman is busy making the "Rock of Ages" movie. From what I've heard, Alex Wong has not recovered enough to be a contestant this season. I wish he could be a guest judge instead. He certainly knows enough about dancing and the competition from the professional standpoint and from the standpoint of a contestant.
I haven't heard what Mia will be doing this season, but I'm glad she's not judging. She's the Randy Jackson of SYTYCD, making negative comments with little or no justification.
Ah! Here you are...Great season opener. What a strong group of dancers. Gets rid of the bad taste left in my mouth by Idol...
One may be blessed effortlessly by a good voice, but this...you work for this ...hard work.
Phenomenal! The dancers get better every year. I've never seen so many standouts on the first night of auditions. Some strong personalities too. And Tyce Diorio was on his best behavior, paying more attention to the auditioning dancers than to himself. In the past, he's made snarky comments just to show off, but maybe Mia's absence meant there was no one that would be impressed by snark.
It was great to see Katee and Jakob leading the choreography sessions. I hope that means they'll be among the all-stars this season. I really think they were the best dancers in their respective seasons. The more popular dancers won, but they were the technical stars. And was Danny there too? Another best dancer of the season who lost to a dancer with more personality.
Wasn't it amazing? I was blown away by the first young couple and then they just kept on comin'...I think the program itself makes more dancers...more exposure. Young people see this and say, "Hey! That's what I want to do!"
Could you believe the speed of that first couple's footwork? They were amazing. I guess the guy was too young to compete this year. I hope he comes back next year. He was great!
I love the message young people get from this show. For one thing, it refutes the stereotype of the limp-wristed male dancer and shows how strong and athletic a male dancer has to be. It's really inspirational for boys with seemingly dead-end lives who can't depend on sports or academic scholarships as a solution. It's sad when talented break dancers can't do the choreography, so I'm always happy when they spend the next year or two taking classes in other forms of dance and come back to audition again.
I wonder if that's the reason Nigel has always been so dismissive of effeminate male dancers. Maybe he isn't homophobic. Maybe he just wants to avoid bolstering that stereotype.
I wonder if that really great dancer who almost made the cut last year will try out again. I forget his name, but I think he was from Detroit or Chicago. Mia traveled to his home to break the bad news to him. Do you remember that guy?
I remember her going there, but don't remember his name. You remember all of them....lol. There may be one or two whose names I remember. I'm always thrilled when a great B Boy makes it with the choreography and moves on, picking it up really quickly or proves himself to already be advanced in other areas also. Yes, that first young couple....I found myself wondering if the girl would dance as well with another partner. I've never seen anyone else with feet that fast. You know, the show just seemed worlds removed from how Idol was run this year...so refreshing.
Do you remember tWitch (that's how he spells it), the runner-up in season 4 who came back as an all-star last season and did that great hip-hop with Alex? He's on the rerun of "Bones" tonight. I love seeing these kids go on to dance on awards shows and episodes of TV series, and "Dancing with the Stars" is practically a reunion center for them.
I didn't know that he spelled it like that. Definitely remember him. Definitely remember Alex doing that! He was so surprising and so very good at it. Have you ever checked to see if that's on youtube or anywhere? I suppose not, but I wouldlove to see that again.
Well, the news is in: All three judges will be back next season. Drat! I like Steven Tyler, but he's no one's idea of a judge, and I liked JLo at the beginning of the season, but despised her by the end. Randy is just a waste of space.
Tonight at 10:00 I'll be watching the premiere of "Platinum Hit," a competition for singer-songwriters, on Bravo. Kara DioGuardi is the head judge and Jewel is the host.
I loved the father and daughter who danced together in the auditions tonight. As for the other father-daughter team, I thought the girl was insane when she said her father was Ringo Starr, but then it turned out that her father was equally deluded. What a strange pair!
