I don't have cable so I never see shows like Iron Chef and I'm sure there are others I miss, too. I have been watching Hell's Kitchen and Master Chef - which I like better of the two. After watching yet another episode of disastrous efforts by the contestants, I've begun to wonder where they got this bunch of misfits.

Anybody watching MC? I get the biggest laugh out of the three judges calling Christian "arrogant"! It seems to me that arrogance is the prime characteristic of these overblown egotistic chefs. Joe Bastianich is the worst I've ever seen; his arrogance knows no bounds, yet he calls out Christian for it. Too funny.

I don't watch "Master Chef" because I switch over to "Hoarders" on another channel when "Hell's Kitchen" is over. I did watch it once and was surprised to see that it featured the same type of dolt that's on HK. The name led me to believe they'd be advanced.

Alma, do you have any idea why all of these cooks smoke? We discussed this in my other cubit and no one could figure out why. Whenever they take a break, all of them are smoking. It surprises me every time because other shows always cut the smokers out of their scenes, and it does seem that a disproportionate number of chefs are smoking -- far above the average for any other group.

I don't watch any of the cable cooking shows because I don't like to cook and I could never be described as a "foodie," but I do enjoy seeing Gordon Ramsay allow his emotions to exceed all reasonable limits.

I did think it was funny when one of the other chefs on MC introduced Gordon as "the chef who put the "'F' in food." The diners who come to these episodes must come for Gordon's apoplexy as much as the food. Got to be even more entertaining in person.

I can't figure out the smoking at all. I've never smoked, but my father was a chain smoker who eventually lost his sense of smell and much of his taste. It's got to have an effect on the palate, so what are these people tasting? It seems the cleaner the tastebuds, the more effective they'd be at the nuances of flavor.

OT: My neighbor handed off a boxed set of Mad Men and I swear, I can smell the smoke and choke up just watching. I lived through the 50's and not nearly the number of people I knew smoked like they do on that show. I've watched several episodes, inhaler in hand, and for the life of me I can't figure out how that show got nominated for - and won - so many Emmys.

Did you grow up in a city? I grew up in San Francisco, where I started smoking at the age of 11, and I didn't know very many people who didn't smoke. They were actually quite rare. In my extended family, one of my sisters was the only non-smoker. I think one of my aunts might have married a non-smoker, but it was her third marriage and it didn't last long, so I'm not sure.

As for the sense of smell and taste, I can only wish mine would be numbed a little after 57 years of smoking. Big Grin So many things still smell and taste awful. Today I was digging some holes for roses in the garden and had to come inside because a lily about 10 feet away had such a strong fragrance that it was giving me a headache. It wasn't an awful smell, just intense.

I watched Mad Men twice and failed to see what the big deal was, so I never watched it again. Maybe it's interesting to people who weren't alive then.

Bastianich, as in related to Lydia??
I;ve watched Gordon's show in which he saves a dying restaurant. Some amazing stuff. And he can turn from nasty to encouraging so fast. I chalk it up to moody and expressive and hides nothing. I've never had to live with someone like that

I saw an interview with him once and he was very charming and polite. He adores his wife and children and would never think of swearing in front of them.

How nice. He seems just a passionate person, and some may be exxagerrated for ratings.

Gordon was on Jay Leno a few night ago and they only had to bleep a few times. Rolling my eyes. Outside of the restaurant, he seems like a normal person. In the kitchen, he's a flippin' maniac.

And, yes, Sally, Joe Bastianich is Lydia's son. She's such a nice person - on her cooking show, at least - that you'd never believe she raised him. He just comes across as a total Jerk.

Zuzu, I grew up in the country. My brother and I - and often my poor mother - were sick every damned winter we were closed up in the house with my father. None of us ever smoked; we'd had enough.

As for Mad Men, I can relate to the women and the ridiculous treatment they got in the workplace. And, yes, the men were chauvinistic pigs.

Anybody watching MC? I do like the "home cooks" better than the HK bunch. It's down to three and I'll be surprised if the 'arrogant' one doesn't win.

Yes, I have seen him on interview and on some talks shows too. I found him very pleasant but what we ALL know from public television shows, 'pleasant' doesn't sell! I'm quite sure the Gordon of "F in food" has motive to be nasty on camera (and probably is in the case that there is a stoooopid failure at one of his restaurants) but is generally a pretty nice person.

Alma...on the smoking thing (rant)....well, smoking gets blamed for everything. I too started very young when it was not only acceptable but fashionable and still, as my dinner guests will attest, I could put my cooking and sense for flavor up against anybody's. I'm not saying it's not bad I'm just sayin' (oh, before I burst into ♪♫ Stone Ponies ♫♪ here) sit on the highway behind a fumin' diesel bus, then come back in my breezey yard and tell me about how it is MY fault that folks get respiratory problems.

Jae Rae, I can get pneumonia from a host of things: smoke (any kind), diesel fumes, dust, chemical fumes and possibly some I don't recognize. It isn't fun to be sick, but cigarette smoke DOES cause me to have "respiratory problems". I try to stay away from it. Don't doubt your cooking ability... . Smiling

Well, interestingly I DON'T get that kind of ailment. Also, I have always been a very considerate smoker in that it is something I generally keep at home or in the open air, and, while there could be one in the pocket of my jeans, skirt, or jacket, no one will ever find one of my cigarette butts crushed on the earth

I just get very tired of being taxed exhorbitantly, blamed for every malady of the world, and having my rights legislated when there is so much more to worry about in this world than if I sit back on my porch with a cocktail and a smoke.

I also think it is a waste of taxpayer money and a violation of business owners' rights to legislate their ability to run the sort of establishment they are allowed to have in this regard (patrons and employees alike can choose if they want to be in a restaurant or bar that allows smoking).....makes me want to shake people and say, "Come on, get real! There are so many issues to battle for good against! This is not one!"

One more point before I kick this soapbox to the corner: LOTS of things cause cancer, respiratory ailment, and heart disease. It has been very convenient to blame it on smoking by using statistics from an entire generation of smokers.

MC turned out well, no? Smiling

I was so tired, I only watched the first half. I don't know yet who won, but I was surprised to see Christian go home. Adrien is the only one of the top four who doesn't annoy the bejeebers outta me. I could tolerate Christian's arrogance more than Suzy's whiny voice and Jennifer's hyena laughter. And if I never hear anybody say "bring it" one more time, I'd be happy.

The MOTH found and downloaded some of Gordon's other shows, including one from the UK. It will be interesting to see what they're like. Perhaps he's more subdued in Britain? Hilarious!

Hear, hear, Jamie! I do suffer from occasional respiratory problems, but they seem to be brought on by my neighbor's gas mower. Every time he mows his lawn, I have to run for cover. Even if they were caused by my smoking, however, they'd be a small price to pay for my lack of depression and digestive problems, which are prevented by smoking, and for the knowledge that I won't get Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, which are also prevented by smoking.

I did watch the finale of Master Chef last night and could not believe the arrogance of that guy. I was so happy when all of his criticism of the woman proved to be wrong.

Well...HK is not over???. Unless I slept through the end, but last night when I thought it was going to be the normal line-up of 1hr. HK and 1 hr. MC, there were 2 hours of MC instead. So what happened to HK?

OK, ladies; I didn't mean to set off a full defense of smoking, but since I did, here goes. I knew nothing of the link between tobacco smoke and Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. So I went researching. This is about the best explanation I could find: http://bmb.oxfordjournals.org/content/52/1/58.short Quite interesting. This sentence from the last paragraph pretty much sums it up: "Even established inverse associations cannot be used as a rationale for cigarette smoking."

Long and short of my feelings on the subject is this: Smoking has been proven to lead to a slew of preventable deaths. However, everyone has freedom of choice. I don't know you; you aren't a family member or a personal friend I see face-to-face. If you were, I would encourage you to quit. But you're not - and I won't. Smoking causes disease and death. So do a host of other things; I'm not playing favorite pathogens here.
