mekos wrote:Jamie, get a leaf catcher and mow over the leaves which will mulch them up for you and catch them for you to use in your gardens. Homemade mulch works good and after cutting up with the mower, you don't have as much to handle. AND saves money on mulch. Oh I do that with some but there are WAYYYYY more leaves than that....knee deep if I'd let them. They'd never break down enough. I mulch the first few layers as they drop, but I'm not kidding...way too many to just mulch and leave. Here's Inky by one of my THREE in-woods leaf piles taken AFTER winter has trodden them down: even though I try to 'spread the piles out' in fall all 3 get so deep that I have to climb up them to spread more leaves on top (in fact, there's a shoe way down in one of 'em ![]() Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. | WOW Jamie, I got 4 acres of woods and not that many leaves! |

| I have lots of oaks, ash, maples, hickory....all of them are big producers. I really don't mind because it is beautiful most of the fall and it is good for me to do the work. I don't like exercise unless there is some 'other' point to it. So in the fall I get plenty draggin' leaves and flippin' the bird at joggers trottin' past in their two hunnard dollar runnin' suits an' fancy headphones. That keeps my shoulders, back, and fingers toned. Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

| We grind them up before winter and spread them. A good mix of Oak and Maple. The Oak we actually get from our neighbor's yard. By first snow we usually have about 2' of leaf mulch. Great insulation against the times we have no snow and sub freezing temps. By Spring maybe 6" are left. This then gets sucked up and added to the compost piles. “The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That's the deal.” C.S. Lewis |

| Oh...across the street and down the road they put fancy sudivisions in with postage stamp yards, and cardboard houses, stuck-up children, and perfect wives....I do wave, but if they smiled their make-up would crack.....and then there's the rest of us. | That is a great idea. The mulch helps keep the roots underground warm and they get a jump start on spring and grows faster. Also makes the ground richer in nutrients. |

| Hi ric...cross-posted. i do have a mulching mower on my tractor. I also have a mow'n'vac trailer. I alway mulch them all before raking and hauling (makes the tarps heavier especially if it's wet though). I used to vaccuum some of them with the trailer but the tube gets clogged ahead of the chopper (so I have to shut down and unclog it then it will spin free and chop at whatever tool I'm in there with) AND the motor mount is unstable so it rattles the screws loose. I've had 2 different guys try to fix the mount to no avail, so I just gave up with that whole unit. I can use the trailer without the vac but it is more work to load it and unload it than to use a tarp. I leave some on the ground for mulch but I don't like to leave too many because in spring I have so much other stuff I WANT to do that I try to keep additional leaf clean-up to a minimum. In spring I usually mulch again and then drive my areator thingy around...anything left, I still have to rake. That takes enough cut out of planting time. See you used a key word there when you said "WE"...that means sum-buddy else helps set up the lawn furniture, trellis'es, washes winders, changes screens,...in short...i don't need leaf clean-up in spring if I can help it Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. | I used the term 'We' as it's our garden. Habit. I do most of the Fall mulching though. But we we don't have acreage we have square footage....lol! Acreage in our area would cost about $60,000+/acre IF you could find any. The secret is to rake and grind, then let the ground lightly freeze before mulching. Otherwise in our climate you get too many plants coming up too early. You want to keep the worst cold away but still trap the freeze for the Hosta, Tulips, etc. Plus the freeze kills many of the bug eggs. “The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. Iron kettle chili anyone? JaeRae I was wondering when you were gonna invite the girls to a fall meet n greet in Wisconsin, then slip us all a rake when we arived. Not a bad plan. Plan B...You know of any boyscouts or girlscouts that need a badge? How about a fall excercize class for teens with free admission. |
