OK...the reason I am being such a braggart is....if I make a committment - here infront of everyone - it will make me carrythrough...and work on it...and...finish?...

So...to start, I haven't done any serious painting in years, despite my threats. SO...here is my subject matter: I chose it, not for the composition but for the work with shadows and light. It is an exercise to get me in the groove. I will have lots of questions along the way and hope you will help me out.

My teacher is Caroline Buchanan...I just love her work. You can google her ...she even has an online course for learning 'her style'...I love it...it is rich and forgiving and full of light....

So...this is the subject....

So...I printed the photo out in Black and White...and went to OfficeMax and had a large copy done. I then decided the areas I wanted more detail in, placed it on Arches 300GSM Rough with a Graphite transfer sheet inbetween....here is a photo of it.....

Today I have been playing with mixes of colors...and i think I have them pretty well figured out.... Quin. Rose and Pthalo green for the bottom leaves with that bright grey, The same mix with a heavy Q.Rose and a bit of Q. Coral for the leaves...streaks of blue and greens in there too. There are so many lights in the colors....

I will find a way to post Caroline's instructions for negative painting... I spent a week with her in the San Juans (Washington State) and found her to be a wonderful teacher and friend....

I'm interested in following your project and checking the link to the lessons. Just bought a few new brushes and anxious to get them wet. Thanks for letting us in on your painting sessions.

OK...today..., after looking at the white paper everytime I was on the porch and terrified to do anything....I started glazing... I am using a warm Quin. Coral for the stalk, then mixed with Quin. Rose as I go down...the bottem will be a slightly bluer red but I want to keep the warmth for the foreground to come forward...

Carol, you have made a wonderful start on this painting! I'm gonna' watch and learn when you layer the colors and hope I can decide to get started on a project too. I just bought a few new brushes - the flat ones - because I only had the round ones.

Great work and thanks for sharing.

Not too much pressure, I hope. We're your cheering section. No judging here. I think it's great that you can draw and paint by hand. You have a tangible piece of art when finished. Most of my work never sees a piece of paper. Go Carol, go Carol!
