These are the steps I am taking for this 23x23 painting. It has an insert of the Casablanca lilies.
This is a krappy pic of the drawing

I didnt expect to start this thread so the next step pix arent really great.
The white areas around the inset are contact paper over the merged paint.
I just added another layer of paint which is drying so I'll show that tomorrow.

When the new paint dries I will add more contact paper. It masks areas where I dont want paint to go. This is a multi step process and gives various values to the lily stems and leaves.
The painting is worth a million dollars as it is now. LOL.
My back aches so I am watching movies the rest of the day.

So you use contact paper to mask??

Never thought of that, but I can see it would work. Does it impair the paper surface at all?

Good grief, that would take forever to do, but yes, it is a good idea.
I just learned something new!
Thanks, J.

The paint layer I last applied is dry enough to take a picture but not dry enough to lay on the next pieces of contact paper.
As you can see the area is darker and I added salt for texture.
I wont remove any contact paper until all the paint layers ( yet to be determined how many) are completely dry.
If Contact paper is removed wet it has a tendancy to leave the gummy part on the painting.
I preferr contact paper when masking large areas. I find masking fluid raises the paper surface when its pulled off. I rarely use fluid anymore.
I am making bigger paintings and using the fluid would take too long.
I did see someone who painted gardens of iris. She used gladwrap and tape to cover the largest areas and mask fluid for those frilly fringed iris edges.
I will try to find her site.

Todays washes layer.
I will dry and remove the masks to see what I have.
Another photo when the masks are removed. I dont want the background any darker. Its killing me to wait for the piece to dry.I will do some drawings for the next piece while I wait.
Maybe use a hair dryer to help it along.

The contact paper mask is off. I will have to repair some of the edges that leaked. I'll go in with washes anyway to define the lilies.

This painting is going downhill fast. I just dont have a great response to it.

On the other hand this is another painting that is moving well. I usually go to what pleases me so I work on this Ligularia painting more.

I hate it when a painting starts downhilling. Most of the time it's because I got too dark too quickly, or too bright, or too something.

But from here, I don't think all is lost, Jo Ann, I think you just need to put it away for awhile then get back to it.

And then sometimes I back slide and cheat and add a wash of white acrylic over the yuck places, then hide it from myself for awhile. That helps.

I agree Sharon.
I am putting it away for awhile.
I keep telling myself it will get better when I paint the image that is the white area now.
At this point I think it got too dark.

I agree the values need to be lighter and brighter ,crisp edges.

Yes, exactly.

The contrast with the outer painting will be stunning.

I did something similar one time with irises, but instead of the square I did a circle and the flowers within the circle were larger than those on the outer border. Looked like seeing through a magnifying glass, but that wasn't my intention.

Seems to me I gave it away.....
I like the square much better.
Way to go, Jo!!

Need less to say I abandoned that painting and one other. Sometimes no matter how hard you try to fix something it gets worse.
