I had a sprinter dog, as well - he was absolutely thrilled when he saw the bike come out, as it was the only way I could even come close to keeping up with him. His farewell is in the dog cubit. One of our favorite games was for me to bike and him sprint next to me, and he would try to push against my foot; I would push back, just like a couple of dogs romping around knocking into each other. I was careful to keep him away from harm, though. In his prime, I could not beat him, so he never had to sulk at being slower. I did beat him on other games, which really irritated him, though.
Dogs become such a part of the life of a true dog person, you hardly even realize it until they are gone. They are all so unique, and can never be forgotten or replaced. I do hope someday, you can find someone to keep you company in the bike shop again, though.
