We have a lot of pictures and videos on our old thread so I'll start a new one for us.

We came from here: http://cubits.org/bluegardens/thread/view/53271/

We are at flood stage here and the rivers are still rising, they won't crest now till maybe Friday. Our water supply station is threatened, so I've filled all the tubs and the washer and all the pots and buckets I can find. The water will probably be shut off within the next hour or two. I also have gallons of bottled water.

It is a bad time. My house is fairly safe I think, not so those that live nearer the river. They've already been evacuated and most every place along the river is sandbagged.

You might want to say a prayer for those who are so badly affected by the waters.

Sure will, Sharon.

Mother Nature is going nuts this year, isn't She? So many areas are dealing with weather related calamities...it's very sad and downright scary.

Do you know if your local stores have added extra amounts of bottled water as a precaution? Seems almost unbelievable to have a situation where a surplus of water creates a difficulty of getting water.

Keep yourself safe and stay away from the river(s) if at all possible.

The stores in our town stocked up on bottled water when this situation started early last week.

Now the priority is trying to save the houses not nearest the river, but the next ones. The ones nearest the river are already flooded.

Thanks Chelle.

I'm sorry to hear about your low-lying areas being flooded. The Ohio river was going down quite a bit here, but we got a lot more rain last night, and it's been raining lightly all day. It was scary to see the water in the backyard of the house I used to live in. It's two miles away from here, about 100 yards from the river.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have your entire house flooded, and most of possessions possibly ruined. I hope those affected make out OK in the end.
Maria's signature line sticks out in times like this, and I hope many of those affected also move to higher ground, raise their house, or take other precautions to prevent it from happening again. I understand this a rare event, but based on possible weather patterns, I would try and stay out of even 250 year storm event locations.
Let us know how you fare, and I hope all goes well.

Lance, one cannot hide from nature.

Whoever heard of a hurricane in Kentucky, it doesn't happen. But it did happen in September 2008, Ike started in Cuba hit Galveston with full force and made it's way up through the Mississippi Valley and right into Kentucky and on northward into Canada. Who' d have ever thought that would happen? Might never happen again. But it did happen. And it took with it trees and roofs and whatever else was not anchored deeply enough.

You can't move entire cities to get them out of the path of whatever nature throws our way. And it's going to happen again and again.

What we do is become cautious and vigilant and work together to help each other. Even those in the highest house or on the highest hill (which in western KY is rare since we are pretty flat) are isolated when flooding occurs. Roads are closed and so are bridges.

What you say is valid and sounds good, but I doubt very much if nature is finished with occasional surprises, no matter where we live. The last time this area flooded with any significance was in 1937. Should we all walk away and leave the area because it will most likely flood again in another 70 years?

Thanks for your suggestions. They have validity, but the truth is, natural disasters can occur no matter where we live. And this is not a disaster in this area. It's more of a quandary at the moment. Tiresome, aggravating, but still, survivable. The tornadoes in Alabama last week were disasters, and who can predict the path of a tornado?

I agree Sharran as much as I'd like NOT to. No matter where we go, where we are, how high, or how low. Mother Nature has means to get to us. and for some reason its the southern states all of you this year. I pray for your safety and for an end to this mess and a start to the season ahead of us. I guess though you have noticed sping blooms come no matter what kind of temper tantrum Mother Nature throws.....................

You are right CC, and boy do I ever have blooms. The roses are absolutely gorgeous. I'd just have to wade in water to see them very well.

I don't mean to be controversial, but the very nature of a lot of my work requires me to take a critical and objective view of many otherwise standard accepted notions.
Indeed, natural disasters will happen no matter what. We can, however, make attempts to lessen their potential. In Virginia, an entire town was moved to higher ground to avoid future flooding (I forget the name of the town, but it happened about 10 years ago). In California, buildings are made to be able to handle earthquakes of a certain magnitude. If you live in an area with lots of snow, the buildings are less likely to collapse if they have sloped roofs that allow the snow to slide off, which is likely one reason why many northern European structures have such steep angles on their roofs.
Yesterday, I drove through parts of Gloucester County in Virginia that were hit by a massive tornado about 3 weeks ago. I had lunch with some friends that literally had the tornado skip right over their house, only to devastate a lot of the rest of their neighborhood. An elementary school is closed due to the damage. Many years ago, I reviewed an application to spend many millions of dollars to dredge sand from about a mile offshore to put back on a beach occupied by summer houses for many well off people. My recommendation was to move the houses, as beaches are dynamic and were never meant to stay in one place. Of course, that did not happen, but it would still have been cheaper than trying to keep a mobile beach from moving around. No way to know everything that may come, but hopefully we take what we consider reasonable precautions to avoid what we can, and deal with the rest.
I do hope your town, and the others affected, come out of the flooding intact.

That is somethng I had trouble understanding Lance, why people keep building a new house on the same spot where they just lost the one that was there due to a hurricane. The home are not only for wealthy persons, many are just small cottages.
Glad you posted Sharon, miss you when you don't, especialy now with t hat terrible weather, glad it seems to be over and your roses are doing fine.
Also enjoyed seeing all your lovely flowers Cece.
With that I wish you all a good night.

Besides the Mississippi in its back door and the Gulf in the front, are there other large bodies of water there? I can't remember, it's been a long time since i was there.

Yep, Lake Ponchartrain, and it's huge. I wish they could move the whole city northwards, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

LOL I lived in Metairie, it's a suburb of N.O. They'd have to move way further north. I haven't been there in so long, I don't know where they'd have room to move it to. Maybe KY? Hilarious!
