I'm ready to leave the fall flowers in the first post of our last thread. I think it's time to take a look at winter.

We came from here: http://cubits.org/bluegardens/thread/view/62894/

What's happening in your world? While the sun is mostly shining in mine, it's a little chilly out there. We even had a snowflake or two yesterday, but they didn't linger long. Last year it didn't snow till December 24, so yesterday's flakes were a surprise.

I have Amaryllis getting ready to bloom, so maybe I'll have some indoor blooms to share soon. And it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

The cardinal above hangs out in my wisteria in back and sometimes in the holly tree nearby. So pretty in the snow.

Let's see pictures of your winter!

Pretty snow pictures, and I love the snowdog! Today is the first day in a long time that we've seen the sun, and it's 38 out there now. It's supposed to warm up to 50, which is good since I will be working outside this afternoon.

45° & no snow. A great deal of rain this fall so the ground is wet when you try & weed. I swear that yesterday was the last time until spring. The tips of my gloves were wet & carpel tunnel on the fingers popped up.

I've seen that before, Maria, but still get a laugh from it.

I go to several forums and even have a cubit of my own with 2 forums but this is the only one that seems to have any life in it at all. The others go weeks without posts.

Fall has lasted a very long time here. It's been wonderful. We did have a killing frost a few weeks ago but it warmed up again and has been so nice. The prediction is for much lower temps beginning tonight and maybe some freezing rain and snow before the weekend is over.

I have the 3' X 4' X 3' cage in the utility room ready to recieve my 5 banty hens who will spend much of the winter inside. 2 of them were raised in there until I had surgery last Dec. and my son insisted they go live in the bird house like chickens. I heard it took 2 weeks of being carried to the b. house every evening and finally being locked in for a few weeks to make them accept it as home. When I was finally able to get out and about in the yarden a bit in late winter they spotted me and came right back in every day for treats of dog food. There are 2 younger ones hatched last summer and an older hen who will join them . I want fresh eggs during the winter if at all possible.

I'm actively looking for part time work. I have gotten letters from Experience Works, as have dozens of others who have almost put in their 48 months, that if we don't actively seek employment outside the program we will be terminated. I'll hand in a resume to a pharmacy/ store tomorrow. I talked to the owner this morning and she said they are hiring permanent part time help. I want to still be able to volunteer at the thrift store as much as possible. GOD sent me there and I haven't sensed any release at this time.

My tald varigated grass has lovely white plumes on it. It was suppose to be Giant Reed Grass but has never gotten any where near the size of the clump it was dug from. I'm happy with the size it is while still being a bit disappointed that it isn't the stunning plant that the parent plant is.

I ran into several clumps of daffodil bulbs while digging to plant garlic in at least one bed. I replanted some of them but still have a large clump left. I think I will just pot up the mass as it and leave it on the inclosed front porch for the winter. As soon as the soil thaws enough in the spring I want to plant them at my church in those raised beds. Some mums were planted in one bed and I think some daffodils and something else to give color thur the summer would be nice. Maybe something like the so called annual dianthus that usually lives for 3 or 4 years. By the way, one clump of those are still blooming right in front of the garage. A nice white with red edge. So nice to see blooms at this time of the year. I hope they don't bloom themselves to death.

I need to get busy and do some more constructive activity today. The sun is starting to set so the day is coming to a close quickly.

GOD bless and keep each of you.

That's so funny Maria! It's about the way I feel.

Good luck finding a new job, Eva Mae. I hope you get whatever you want or need.

Fun about the chickens.

It's been warmish here today and yesterday, somewhere about 50, not a thing blooming though.

My 5 little hens are now in the cage. I found a large amount of shredded office paper at the recycle place yesterday so I stuffed 2 large feed bags full and brought it home. So much neater than wood chips. Those get scratched and thrown out of the cage leaving me a daily mess to sweep up. At least I hope this works better. A piece of PVC pipe is their temporary roost. I think a piece of 1" X 2" wood will be better. At least it won't be as apt to start rolling when they get onto it or someone starts moving when they are all on it. lol The wire is 1" X 2" mesh and of course nowadays wood is never the full measurement it says it is so it should be a nice tight fit for a stable roost.

It's getting really chilly out there. I got some things out of the garage so there is more room to get the van in without rubbing against or running into something. I even have room to get things out of both sides of the van if they aren't too big.

I need to get vaccuming done and decide on tomorrow's lunch. I found a piece of some kind of red meat in the freezer, probably beef that I got on sale way back when. Even tho it was in one of those FoodSaver bags it appears to have a little bit of freezer burn on one end. The bag didn't look as tho it had held the seal very well either. That would explain the freezer burn. Anyway, I poured some rather potent BBQ sauce over it and put it in the new smaller countertop oven to thaw and bake slowly. As small as the pan is I could probably make a salmon patty and bake it in there too. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

GOD bless & keep each of you.

We had our first snow today, 1/2 inch on grassy areas. The road surfaces are still warm enough to cause the snow to melt. Thumbs up

No snow as yet & none in sight. Weather people said that last time it was so warm into the fall there were only about 24" for the season. Normal is the mid-40s & we had 80" last year. I can do without that.

I love cute snowdog pictures! No snow here yet. Yesterday it was near 50 degrees, and it may get up there today. I'm grateful for every relatively warm day, as I work outside a good part of the day.

I could sure do without 80 inches of snow, too. Wow!

As my DW reminds me--these days quite frequently!--every day of winter is a day closer to spring. Hilarious!

Laila loves the snow. Once it gets deep enough, she pounces on voles that tunnel beneath it.

Maria, loved the photo! Wilma's going to post it on her Facebook page. Thumbs up
