I'm not usually one for "scratch" cakes (love the Cake Mix Doctor books, LOL), but this one is just so easy & so good! Dust off that recipe and bake it up. :-) Recipe appears on the recipe thread here: http://cubits.org/bluegardens/thread/view/73528/

hahaha... puppy isn't in MD; she belongs to my parents! They've been talking about getting a dog for years, and I've been pushing them on it. We had a dog when I was growing up (also a golden), so this isn't their first rodeo. I'm basically the backup person -- if they need a break, help with training, somebody to take her if they decide to take a long cruise... I'm there. Joyanna is hoping they'll need lots of help from us!

Thanks, Sharon, for moving that photo to the right place!

Jill - Rats. I so want another golden retriever.. I miss my Wolfgang. But, I don't have time for a puppy right now as I'd like to be able to dedicate all my time to training a puppy and getting a rescue is too expensive, if I'm approved!

Last night, I was playing with the camera trying to get pictures of a hummingbird and got a picture of my Nike kitty as he wasn't happy that I was outside & he was inside.

Did manage to get pictures of a juvenile goldfinch & a bluejay, though...

Skitty, I hear you about rescue costs... I know the adoption fee the humane society charges doesn't begin to cover all their costs, but some rescue groups seem to go almost too far in the other direction. I don't know if you have the time to foster, but maybe volunteering to be a foster home for a rescue group would mean they could cut you a little slack when your "right dog" came along.

Sharon, speaking of just the right dog coming along, could we please have a Sunshine photo for this thread? And maybe a reprint of your meeting -- since that's one of my favorite pet stories ever?! :-)

Okay, Jill. He will love that. Don't ya just love those big ears. Wonder if he will ever grow into them.
He is a rescue pup. He had foster parents. They named him Ricky. We already had a Ricky who died and went to doggy heaven and then Chester, who died of cancer only after having him for three years. He was a beautiful Lab. Ricky's nickname is "Pups" and we just adore him. He smiles and smiles and makes us laugh. He was so brave through his cancer ordeal.
He is quite the mix of Boxer, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Shepherd. We love him dearly. He loves to give kissess to his papa. I do not take his kisses and he knows it but he gets lots of love and attention from me all day long.
Jill, you should see him in his boots. We have to put boots on him when it rains because we are in farm country and he would be a mess without the boots. The boots save me a lot of cleaning.

Nemmy (Nemesis) is such a happy kitten. He'll never get big. He's gonna be a permanent 4 month old kitten I think. He weighs about 4-5lbs and is so tiny. And I let him keep his boy parts for way too long before I had him fixed hoping that he'd grow, but I don't think so. So now he's called NemmyNoBalls... yes, it's a horrible name, but it's funny.

And he loves his belly rubs.

"Nemesis" sounds like a tough-guy name... "NemmyNoBalls" -- not so much.

He's beautiful, though, with his golden eyes and jet black fur.

Here is Pups with his new red harness and leash. And of course his red and black boots to go with the "outfit." Big Grin Thumb of 2014-06-28/DaylilyOma2/052097

"Pups" likes his red "outfit" and he REALLY likes for me to take him for walks. A number of times he has gone to the door and barked, wanting me to walk with him again. The air was so heavy tonight, I could not go. DH mowed and the strong smell of the cut grass made it harder to breath. Earlier this evening I took him for a short walk. It was breezy so I had to go inside.

Hopefully we'll get some breaks in the heat & humidity so you & Pups can enjoy your walks this summer!

Josie continues to delight my parents. She's 19 pounds now, starting to lose her puppy fuzz... looks like she'll be toward the lighter end of the spectrum when her adult coat comes in, but not platinum blond, just golden, really.

She's teething, so of course she's trying to chew on everything, including people, but we're all working on that with her, and she's learning. Joyanna and I help keep her supplied with new toys and chewies (cow ears are a favorite, but she can polish one off in 20 minutes now rather than 4 days LOL).

She's learning other tricks, too, like "come," "sit," "wait," and even "lie down" (which must be one of the hardest things for dogs to do on command; our previous family dog never really did do that one well).

She's learning to communicate with us, as well. When her water bowl runs out, she scratches at it to let Dad know she needs a refill. She loves to lie right in front of the air conditioning vent to cool off. The other day, she came in from outside, flopped down right into the cool breeze and went, "ahhhhhh." Then the air conditioner cycled off. She jumped up, looked hard at the vent, then scratched at it. ROFL!

I think she's bright as well as very sweet & loving. We just have to get her past the puppy nipping/chewing phase. :-)

We visited my folks this weekend, and I got to spend a good bit of time working with Josie. She's making progress on all fronts, and she's such a happy girl, tail wagging all the time. Dad & I gave her a bath this morning, so she smells a lot less doggy LOL. Water dogs like golden retrievers have oily coats and tend to get pretty whiffy... we love them anyway, but they're nicer to cuddle after a bath!

I lost Bella the stealth cat this weekend. She was always a scared little thing, but I tried to give her the best life possible. I put her to rest in the woods behind my place and marked the spot with a big rock in case I am tempted to plant. She will rest peacefully in the shade with her final resting place covered in ferns and a big rock.
