Hi Geoff, you have a male Bibio pomonae, a great shot! I haven't yet seen one.

Many thanks Janet.

I see Bibio pomonae is also referred to as the heather fly, and that is where I was. Just close to heather moorland where I was also looking for golden-ringed dragonfly. Bibio were pretty much everywhere.

Regards,

Geoff

That's probably why I haven't seen one yet Geoff! I do have a bit of wild heather though, I think Calluna vulgaris self set which is increasing nicely! I'm on heathland with old woodland type country but the heaths must have mostly gone.

I guess you didn't find the Golden-ringed dragonfly?

I think it is a potter/mason wasp, but not sure what 'brand'

Thanks,

Geoff

It fits a male Symmorphus bifasciatus best Geoff, the first antennal segment is black, flanged top edge of pronotum.

Hello Geoff! Smiling

It looks like Zygiella x-notata and I bet it was around a window?

Hello Geoff, good to 'see' you again! Smiling

The moth is Beautiful Golden Y, Autographa pulchrina which is one I have yet to see! The last shot looks the same.

The fly is Muscidae male, Phaonia angelicae is the most likely candidate. You do need to see leg bristles as a rule, but this one has the correct colour, leg colour and the orangey wing bases.

Many thanks Janet. Pretty lousy year here for insect photography, with the very poor weather, but have managed just a few damselfly and dragonfly photos.

Tell me about lousy weather Geoff! It's not as cold as it was, but if it's not raining the wind is making it almost impossible to get good photos!
