I see Bibio pomonae is also referred to as the heather fly, and that is where I was. Just close to heather moorland where I was also looking for golden-ringed dragonfly. Bibio were pretty much everywhere.
That's probably why I haven't seen one yet Geoff! I do have a bit of wild heather though, I think Calluna vulgaris self set which is increasing nicely! I'm on heathland with old woodland type country but the heaths must have mostly gone.
I guess you didn't find the Golden-ringed dragonfly?
The moth is Beautiful Golden Y, Autographa pulchrina which is one I have yet to see! The last shot looks the same.
The fly is Muscidae male, Phaonia angelicae is the most likely candidate. You do need to see leg bristles as a rule, but this one has the correct colour, leg colour and the orangey wing bases.
