Daily Bug Log (70)

Chrysididae wasp ~6mm, I might be able to get an ID on the Chrysis forum. It stayed for ages while I got plenty of shots, on an Iris leaf at the edge of the pond. 27th July (likely to be Pseudomalus auratus)

Cryptophagidae, Antherophagus pallens I think.. 26th July. This is probably the same as the beetle which attached itself to the proboscis of two Bombus, a queen B. ruderatus and a male. I found they do this to get to the bumbles nest where their larvae are bred, I don't think the male would have taken it there though!

Very good shots of the Chrysididae wasp, they are difficult! You were very lucky it stayed for ages..

Very atmospheric of Bombus lapidarius, he looks like having an aureole..

Cute little Braconidae on Ragwort!

Fantastic series of Conops quadrifasciatus Smiling , beautiful!

Interesting you found out why the tiny beetle tried hitch hacking with the bumble to the nest! Blinking

And 'played' with it for a while until it got fed up and flew off, there wasn't any juicy Aphids on the Viola Big Grin

It got to 28C here too, but there had been cloud which increased until it was full cloud cover around 2.30pm. It's starting to feel slightly chilly inside now although it's still warm outside. I really wouldn't mind if it rained.

I got a few insects earlier in the day but later most disappeared. There was two Bombus terrestris, one small and one about 2cm which are probably both workers. Dasysyrphus albostriatus was on the small lot of Ivy, I got a couple of reasonable shots but it seemed easily scared off. Eventually it came to check me out then disappeared for good! Also Cheilosis scutellata female, she stayed for some time this time. All the female syrphids are pregnant, I imagine they will lay their eggs this autumn.

I ended up watching a fungi growing near the drain amongst moss, it's a wonder any have grown, there's a smaller one nearby but the slightly bigger one is getting attention from a few insects. There was three Sepsidae males vying for the attention of a pregnant female! That fungus is going to end up riddled with larvae. Hilarious!

Here's where I found out about the beetle..

Oh the poor Orange Ladybird, it looks very disappointed! Hilarious! Nice set of shots. Smiling

Still no clouds over here, it is still over 20C...
I didn't see many insects despite the hot days, apart from the usual guests..
It is comforting to know all your female Syrphids are pregnant, mine too.. Big Grin

19th September.
Only one shot of a fly I think could belong to the Stratiomyidae family, maybe a Sargus sp...I couldn't find an exact match though in the Diptera gallery but some look-a-likes..

It's 20C here too at past 10pm but I think it's a little cooler than that, the thermometer on the back wall says over 21C. Tomorrow is supposed to be 26C so it might be 28C again, funny they don't put the maximum for the day but still show the forecasted temp.

Sargus is correct but which one I don't know, it seems to match Sargus flavipes more than S. bipunctata. I don't know what the difference is supposed to be but apart from leg colour I think abdomen colour is important, I think I read that once on diptera.info and maybe it was one of yours which had some red on the abdomen?

Dolichopodidae, Poecilobothrus chrysozygos female.. yet again. Rolling my eyes. In my defence I hadn't yet got a name for it so I didn't forget that I got more pics of it. Hilarious! This is a bit gruesome, it took some time to work out what it had, the first shot shows I think a very young toad. Sad The fly is small, ~6mm I think. 27th July

I saw an earwig on the edge of the window ledge above the sink, next thing a spider was carrying it down the tiles! It used the chip basket on it's way, how helpless can one feel! Blinking 26th July
