| It doesn't really matter if you posted in the daily thread C., you can start a new thread for your identifications if you wish in the Bug Pics & ID forum. To do that, scroll to the bottom of all threads where you can put a title in the top box, then your post as you would normally. You might find this preferrable so you can keep all your posts in the one place but I'm easy. I recognise the type of fly you have, it's similar to Phasia hemiptera in Tachinidae which is one I have. Phasia aurigera looks the best bet, it seems to be variable.. http://www.diptera.info/search.php?stext=Phasia aurigera&sea... http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&cp=15&gs_id=2&xhr=t&q=p... In Phasia both males and female have big eyes which meet in the middle, but we can see the other end of yours! Give me a minute and I will move your post for you to a thread of your own.. You now have a spider in the listing! |

| I was about to think it must be Cupido minimus, I was finding some variation in that species. I then found Cupido alcetas, perfect match! http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Europe/France/photo65740.h... http://www.butterfliesofbulgaria.com/cupalc.html Provençal Short-tailed Blue http://www.eurobutterflies.com/species_pages/alcetas.htm Beautiful shots. |

| Thank you C.! Such handsome fellows! I'd love to be able to name them but I don't think it's possible. Oh I see you have put a name to them, great! We all have tricky bags. |

| Lovely shots C! It's not a Vespula species, and I don't think it's one we have here (not so exotic in this cold climate. I think I have a good idea where to look for it.. I'll see if I can find it or at least something similar. |
|
|||
| Can you believe Janet that I could not find much first for the difference between vespula and apis and this one seems to be named either an apis, either a vespula. Thank you for looking as I did not find much information about it. Come along and take a walk in a French garden~~Click here for Species Tulips and other bulbs. | I think I have found it, or close. Sceliphron spirifex, some have all black antennae, others with yellow at the base like yours. It could be the differences in sex or just a variable feature. http://www.orchidee-poitou-charentes.org/article1184.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sceliphron_spirifex I found on a French forum some key points, this is the translation but you will be able to read it in French.. Quoting:Will require that I complete the illustrated key that is here http://www.insecte.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=69297&sid=b... Reading and translating more replies, it would appear to be Sceliphron caementarium .. http://www.galerie-insecte.org/galerie/ref-57106.htm But, as the further replies state: Quoting:But precisely in the key 3 of the mandraspatanum femur is marked as black as that of the caementarium. Is it to change in the key as I understand it? Quoting:If you are talking about the key that is on the forum: thanks to you, I find that it is false or the less not enough precise for this species that I had a little neglected at the time, because it is exceptional in France. This is very confusing, as the hind femur on yours is mostly yellow with black trochanter (the part joining the femur to the body). At best I can say it's a Sceliphron species! |

| Well blow me down! I searched again using just 'Sceliphron' and the suggestion box this time showed Sceliphron destillatorium, a perfect match!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/santidd/3928720484/ There's a photo on Galerie-insecte.org showing the key points.. http://www.galerie-insecte.org/galerie/sceliphron_destillato... |

| Words for bugs come with learning, it's not easy to get your head around everything at once. The first picture is showing for me, the same as the others are. I wonder if it's an issue with you computer? Have you cleared your cookies lately? There could be a cached version of when there were problems with thumbnails which is causing this. I know we had problems some time ago but Dave fixed it so try clearing your cookies. If you need help with that I will tell you where to do it. |
