The eggs start small and elongated C, usually in a row. They are red, and become darker when they dry. I have seen some lately which look to have hatched but they are still small, more rounded at the ends and at that stage they don't have the excrement on them. I haven't taken photos as I usually just remove them on sight.

I don't know much if anything about glow worms, I wonder if they move slowly forward as they feed? The females glow to attract a male ..

Thank you for the information about the eggs and for the link Janet. By now I have only seen grown ups crioceris, not their eggs.

Look under you Lily leaves C, if you see small red eggs in a row then remove them. You have the beetles, you will also have their eggs. Thumbs down

Don't beat yourself up C, you did well getting such an awkward shaped creature!

It's getting slowly warmer here, and we have 24C now even with the clouds becoming much darker! I think it's brewing for a storm, the wind keeps gusting strongly. Not good for insects nor taking phots, but I have loads to edit and get through yet. Rolling my eyes.

I got something to show! This morning i have found a bat on the sidewalk. The poor little thing has a broken win and got hit to the head, some blodd can be seen on one ear.

I took it in the garden. Withtout being able to do uch I am sure it will be able to rest and may be to recover. I did not want anybodyy step on it and smash it, a dog or a cat trying to use it as a toy.

Did not touch it, just push it in a bag to carry it and put it in the shad near a tree in the garden. I took some pics (not very good for a change) and as I was going to try to give it some juice of meat (nothing else to feed it) I saw that it was able to climb the tree. Not too bad! Further to what I read these wild animals are protected and three types are living in France. I am sure that you will tell me which one this one isJanet.
Here are the pics.

Hi C! It's sad to see them injured, worse to see them dead. It might recover, I don't know if it will be able to fly if it has a broken wing though. I can't say which it is, you probably have a good many more species than we have and they are not easy to separate.

I found a site which might help with a regional list of co-ordinators.. .

Thank you Janet
I think it is Plecotus auritus or Plecotus austriacus. They really look like gremlins.
Here is the website

What do you think? I am so happy to see it was able to climb to the tree!

I wouldn't like to hazard a guess C, it can depend on minor differences. Look at the bat I found dead,

Or, gremlins look like bats? Hilarious! They could have been modelled on bats.

Yes it is better to say that gremlns have been modeled on bats.
Yours look like mine. Ears and color. Poor little thing. I read your post. It is just unbelievable. It is still very dry. The level of the well is more than 150 cm lower than usual, the mi-toads are not singing anymore, not a noise during the night, some butterflies flying during the day but not many. Life seems to die all around. Very unpleasant feeling and watering some plants does not prevent them to die either!

We have been more fortunate with rain, this year has been the wettest for 100 years after two years of drought! It became drier in August but we have still had the occasional shower of rain. The temperature improved too, then we had a chilly spell towards the end of August but the last few days have been hot, today is 26C!

150cm is a huge difference in your well! At least I haven't had to water plants much this year, that can get very tiring.

When buttterflies are around you know that the temperature is getting high again Janet. Yes watering can be tiring. As you know I pull water from the well and the level is lower and lower. No engine, just my two arms and a bucket (?).
For you all,the butterfly of the day. i do apologize but I did not make any search for the name. You are so much better and faster J. So pleease give me the answer. Which one is it?

We have not been so lucky with high temperatures the last few days! It should be warmer for the weekend with 20-21C.

That must be hard work to pull the water from the well!

The butterfly is a Meadow Brown, Maniola jurtina. You do have a lot of browns compared to what we have, this is quite easy to recognise once you know it and it's supposed to be common although I don't see it very often. It can be mistaken for the Gate-keeper (Pyronia tithonus) which has two white spots instead of one, males and females differ with the male usually having more orange.

There's a few variations on this site ..

You are right Janet. We have a few butterfly of this shade. Thank you for the ID and the link. You are the best,, just like usual (I love it). The temperatures are going up and down, so you have to keep a little wool around all the time. Too hot in the afternoon, and chilly in the evening. Pulling the water is a good way to practice some sport, before gardening and walking. Ithink that the bat has been eaten up by a cat! So bad.

Before our cold weather we also had some hot days with very cold nights, when there's no clouds the heat escapes quickly at night. I was going from a simple cotton dress in the day to putting on several layers at night!

Pulling water may be OK if you are able to do it, and as long as you don't fall in the well. Hilarious!

Poor bat, I guess it was too badly damaged. Sad

in fact Ihave thought that many interesting things should lay in the well. May be it voulc worth to dive and have a look (next summer).. In the meantime I caght a new bug. Weird, seems to be a green fly and weird to see it on the cosmos. Here it is. Trying to do my best I was shaking so I will go on my way! Do you think this one is using some eye liner for its eyebrow Janet?

Nice contrast on the white Cosmos! Most definitely he uses eye liner, or even mascara. Hilarious!

It's a male Calliphoridae, possibly a Lucilia sp. but there's more than one greenbottle fly, they are not one which can be easily identified from photos.

If you take a dive into the well next summer be sure to take a waterproof camera. Big Grin
