Found this large moth in a parking lot. It was over 2 inches from wing tip to wing tip.Thumb of 2014-08-22/marti/7849bb

JR, that sure looks like the one I found. I could not messure it but I know the wing span was over 2 inches probably 3 inches at least. It was so beautiful.

It can be difficult to gauge size when you're not used to doing it Marti, people usually guess something as being bigger than it is.

I think you would have been so much in awe of it's beauty the size wasn't foremost in your mind, you would have known it was big though! Hilarious!

I tried to pick it up but it flew away. I wanted to take a picture of it on my hand to show the size of it.

Hi Marti,

If you can slip a coin near the creature you wish to photograph without disturbing it, that would be a good guide. You can always measure a coin... provided you're not stoney broke!
