ps...the NABA biennial meeting will be held at the NBC (Mission, Texas) on October 28-31, 2010. This center is Jeff Glassberg baby :o) At present our center consists of 70 or so acres of open area with native butterfly nectar and larval host plants and trees. All butterflies are flying free - there are no cages or enclosures.

At this time the original butterfly garden is about an acre or so in size with a butterfly walking trail along a fresh waterway. Our area has recorded about 320 species. We've had numerous first U.S. records - most of which were seen during the fall season in that garden area. http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabast/rarities.html

Check out the NABA.org website for more information if interested in attending. We will be celebrating the official opening our National Butterfly Center (hopefully - if all the construction stays on schedule!!!) http://www.naba.org/meeting.html

Also check out our local NABA Chapter website for photographs and information on our butterflies and record sightings. http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabast/

Sweet Charleen!!! I love it when I see a butterfly on the hummingbird feeder!!! That is a cute little hairstreak indeed!!!

This is one of my favorites - the Leafwings were a little too big for the hummingbirds peace of mind - they kept zipping around the feeder squeaking obscenities at the butterflies no doubt!!!

There is an old 2005 photo of a Urania Swallowtail Moth (Urania fulgens) on a hummingbird feeder in Kingsville, TX. Now that is an awesome moth!!! I've yet to see one myself but there have been several sightings that year. Scroll down to the fourth photo on this link.

My Goodness , I love the color on those first three, and they were all beautful. Maybe I should put out an extra just for the butterflies , huh??? Thank you. I love seeing them and getting pic. That little fella was a soft dove gray color. I love getting the pic. Even tho I don't know what they are. I have a lot of the swallowtails and the Gulf Frits right now. Disgusting looking but obviously very effective brew!

Charleen I love it!

Kelli I'm using a NikonD40 W/ A 55-200MM Lens.
I really need more Megapixels though for Butterflies.
Shooting from distance and cropping I'd say at least a 10 Meg.
Or a 100-300mm lens.......

Here's a not so great Red Spotted Purple shot....lol!
They were everywhere when we got there.... gone when we left.

Oh phooey Cat. Got all excited and looked up Mission, Texas. I'm going to be in Houston at the beginning of November, but I see it's like 7 hrs away! Texas is TOO BIG :-( Wonder if there are any good butterfly gardens near Houston... I'd love to see some different ones than we get here!

A digital SLR sounds really good Ric. Doubt I'll get one that fancy.. but you never know. Then again, I've been told we might be going somewhere as a surprise next weekend, so I might not get one at all! Hmm. Must leave printouts lying around everywhere! I can't miss the end of this season, my first with a decent number of butterflies in the yard!

Hey Charleen, I've seen something like that, I was wondering what it was...strange thing. I was thinking it was some kind of beetle!

Kelly, Galveston has Moody Gardens which have a butterfly area...I was there in late June. The garden and aquatics displays are fairly extensive and the best are in 3 giant glass pyramids The tropics, complete with birds, pyramid is definitely worth seeing. However, the butterfly area left a lot to be desired, rather disappointing

great photos, everyone! I'm really enjoying them all!

Ric, do you have the same kind of camera that "our" Celia(on the weather cubit) has? I know she has a Nikon but I can't remember what model it is.

Too funny Jmorth, I've actually been to Moody Gardens, but had no idea what was there. We had a 90th birthday celebration for my husband's grandmother there a few years ago, but we were just in nice room off a restaurant in the evening, and I had no idea where I was.. I recognize those pyramids though!

You were there in June? Then they re-opened. Last I'd heard they'd shut down due to hurricane damage. Good to know they are back up and running. I neglect to keep up with those butterfly conservatories as I am always too busy looking at the free flying ones at our local parks :o)

Many of you may have seen this critter, or your local variation, before.
It's a Robber Fly.
This one is about the size of the last two joints on my little finger.

Their prey, large bugs including Beetles, Dragonflies and Butterflies.
We saw a Buckeye get nailed.

Kelly - look up the Cockerell Butterfly Conservatory in Houston. I have yet to go there even though I travel to Houston at least once a month - just always too busy with work to get there during the hours they are open.
