I have gotten a couple seeds catalogs in the mail but it's to early to start anything here. Doesn't keep me from dreaming. That made me wonder how the rest of you guys were doing with your gardening or planning. Anybody started yet?

I am reluctant to do anything much as they are predicting that we will have drought again this year. I just don't have time to do extensive watering.

I was eyeing up my little plot today and thought strong about giving it a few licks with the cultivator rake but the cold wind drove me back inside. I need to get after it if I am gonna get those beds reconfigured. I also need to move my herbs to a sunnier location. They have not done well in the shade. They seem to get leggy instead of bushy. Any suggestions?

Sun and keep on the dry side has worked good for herbs down here. Good thing too especially with all the heat and drought.

With water being majorly regulated, learning it best to get seeds for crops and plants that can grow in a very short period of time. Early in the ground. early harvest or blooms, collect seeds and than just leave a few tough drought tolerant plants to struggle through summer heat.

Thanks Star. Water isn't as much of a problem here because we have a creek in the yard that flows most of the time and we have a well and city water. I have tried to build a few weirs in our creek but high water always washes them away. I guess I could always fill a few barrels for harder times but flat ground is at a premium here and it's nearly all covered already.

I will have a bit of extra space for gardening this year as all the horses are at a friend's barn now and I can use the "horse lot". But it is all sand and rock so I will have to put in beds. That will take a lot of energy, strength and money and I don't seemto have much of any of those things just now. But I may be able to do enough to amend a few hills and raise some corn. It is sunnier over there so I may move my herb containers over there but getting water over there is a problem. It will be a project to work on.

I still need to get my seeds out and go through them. Do any of you have any ideas bout a sweet corn I can save seed from?

This thread will be used for general talk about gardening this season. I am going to start another thread for my specific garden this year. I hope all of you will start a thread for your gardens too. It will make it easier for each of us to keep up with our own progress and we can comment on each others progress.

I'm wondering if there will even be a season for gardening this year with all the crazy weather. We had three gorgoeus days in high 60's and about 50F at night. The spring fever hit hard and it was three days of burning and cleaning and now we barely hitting 40's and high winds and in the low 20's with frost for the next three days.

So much stuff already bloomed early with the warm weather we had and now it all gonna have a frozen death by morning. Have brought what can be. Clipped my daffs and gave the flowers to a neighbor to enjoy cuz I know they will be a mush mess by morning.

My brother in southeast La was lamenting the impending loss of this year's mayhaw crop to a hard freeze.

We have had 2 days of deep, hard freeze and a few inches of snow. I imagine I may have to replant my green sprouting broccoli and my lettuce as the ground froze hard. I do not know if it froze under the hoop house. But there is plenty of time to replant as it is still very early.

We may end up investing is a small flock of guineas if the ticks are too bad come spring. The cold will sometimes kill off the pests or at least keep the numbers down. But not always. Guineas never fail to work on erradicating ticks.

Really??????? Never heard that about guineas and tics. That the one thing I worry about here too now especially since the deer have been all over the yard and munching.

I can deal with the tons of never ending sketters munching all day long, but hate the tics. Oh how I hate them. I still scream, cry and freak out when I get them on me.

I trying to do a bunch of burning, so I hoping that will get rid of some of them, but with all the feral cats running around here and stray dogs, I don't know how much good it will do.

Looks like Guineas are in your future. LOL They also make great watch dogs.

Everyone must be busy planting - awfully quiet here.

Due to the promise of another year of drought, I have decided not to put in a garden this summer.

Just a few crocus are blooming up next to the house & near the vent for the drier. We have not grown sweet corn since the year it was harvested by the racoons. We enjoy differebt types of irises & share the blueberries with the birds. Bushes are quite tall so they can have the upper branches.

Well my daughter is home for spring break and got inspired, so we now have a small garden: two kinds of squash, three peppers, several different tomatoes, and green beans. I hope it doesn't all just dry up and blow away this summer; so far we have had an unusually wet start to the year.

PP, there are container friendly hybrids for just about everything. You might consider putting in a few pots of a few favorites and if the drought gets the garden you'll still have some veggies to enjoy. I hope your garden does well. I was sad that you wouldn't have any fresh veggies.

That is an idea - but I would have to remember to water the containers...
